Learning to say, ‘I’m feeling overwhelmed,’ or ‘I’m feeling irritable,’ or ‘I’m feeling embarrassed’ is really important for them to be able to express that. “Typically, it’s often because the children are covering up deeper feelings that they may not know how to effectively express or cope with.” All children were effected in ways of staying home, less social interaction.”

The College Tour Brings Equity Decision-making into the Classroom ... (Faculty Focus)

The College Tour has become the college readiness preparation, enabling an equitable distribution of information among the entire student body for free.

The College Tour recently aired their first ever, all-Spanish episode at Maricopa Community College Systems, one of the largest community college networks in the country. “I am a first-generation immigrant for whom the process of getting into college has been one of the most intimidating things I have ever faced,” said freshman Frida Guzman, who was featured in our recent episode. Counselors in low income schools are relying on The College Tour to foster a connection to higher education and help students identify with their onscreen contemporaries. It also features corresponding videos and assignments for student to help them learn how to make educated decisions that are based on their own personal needs and desires. Teachers and college counselors have thanked us for helping put kids on a college track that they otherwise weren’t sure would be achievable.” Because touring colleges can be logistically difficult, teachers have brought the show into their classrooms as a way to supply students with meaningful information so students can make decisions beyond the scope of what they may have deemed possible—or rather impossible.

The new Friday (schedule), where they are going to help them grow and that’s where they can get the extra study time if they need it and actually learn some skills too. The A schedule is Monday through Thursday. They will have their normal academic schedule, but Friday is really what we call the Toro Grow Time, and it’s that Friday experience that the students are going to get to work through and it’s just going to be a lot of fun,” said Guzman. I had parents that came to AJB and were like ‘this is not the AJB I came too. (Seguin) – This year, it just might be the students and staff at A.J. Briesemeister Middle School, who are the most excited about returning to school. She says after a very successful Meet the Teacher event on Thursday, she’s not sure if parents are more excited about the building’s new look, or about the academic changes that will be happening today.

Superheroes, custom libraries and a bunny: Valley teachers go ... (The Desert Sun)

As school resumes across the Coachella Valley, students are seeing how much teachers go out of their way to make their classrooms extraordinary.

For science demonstrations, she has a terrarium full of Madagascar hissing cockroaches. In the opposite corner, Coats has built a library and reading nook for her students. Peterson’s personal pet, Lady Venom, a fluffy bunny rabbit (that is 0% venomous and 100% cute) hops around the room as an unofficial therapy animal for angsty pre-teens. It's all over the classroom, framing vivid blue and pink walls of butcher paper that will be adorned with student work as the year moves forward. “Literally every single other item is purchased by the teachers out of their own pockets.” Her lectern and desk are covered with Wonder Woman upholstery. She teaches “wondrous writers” in homage to Wonder Woman, and she teaches “marvelous math” in honor of her favorite Marvel characters. She collects Deadpool toys, and has a growing stack of mint-condition superhero “Pop!” figurines that students have helped contribute to over the years. Teachers in Palm Springs Unified say they have more support from the district for classroom decoration. Her custom-made curtains look like comic books. Her decor even extends outside of the classroom, where she has pinned more wallpaper to feature student work and written a message on her door that says, “Give your best.” “I’m here for most of the day, so it has to be appealing and create a welcoming environment.”

Classroom playbook for constructive dialogue (SmartBrief)

Institute's materials help teachers support students as they learn to talk across differences with constructive dialogue techniques.

We saw similar effects in the outcomes of the program for liberals, moderate and conservative-identifying students,” Fay says. Nearly three-quarters of students showed a decrease in polarization, and more than half said they could better recognize the limits of their own knowledge, were less likely to negatively attack others and were less likely to negatively evade others during conflict. Their psychology-based Perspectives program designed for high-school and university educators to use with students is free, and the organization has since expanded to work with companies, nonprofits, local governments and religious groups. CDI’s recent randomized, controlled trial of 775 students at three colleges and universities shows success with the program. In the midst of this, in 2017, social psychologist and New York University professor Jonathan Haidt and researcher and businesswoman Caroline Mehl created the Constructive Dialogue Institute to address the inability of people to agree on facts, listen to one another’s views, think critically and find compromise. A political division among Americans that became stark and often verbally abusive during the 2016 campaign for US president shifted from social media into workplaces and even schools.
