WTA Toronto Final Prediction: Halep vs Haddad Maia (Last Word on Baseball)

Former-Grand Slam champion Simona Halep is set to take on the in-form Beatriz Haddad Maia for the WTA Toronto title in Sunday's final.

Haddad Maia has scored three top-10 wins this season and comes to the final with a ton of momentum. Spurred on by that disappointment, Halep was back in the winner’s circle this year, ending her title drought in emphatic fashion in the opening week of the season at the Melbourne Summer Set 1. The final of the WTA Toronto 1000 pits two of the most-improved players on tour in 2022.

Haddad Maia, the first Brazilian to reach the quarterfinals and beyond at a WTA 1000 event, exhibited strong play in the forecourt to hold for 5-3. After an early exchange of breaks in the third set, Halep found greater margin on her groundstrokes to ease ahead 4-1. Halep had four double faults in her opening service game, but she rebounded from an 0-3 deficit to sweep six games in a row for the one-set lead. Halep gritted out the victory after converting five of her 10 break points; Haddad Maia was 4-for-9. She has reached 18 WTA 1000 finals, tied with Serena Williams for the most finals since this level was introduced in 2009. This is her second title of the season, following a trophy at Melbourne Summer Set 1 in January.

Beaten up in longer rallies, Haddad Maia shifted her approach and tried to play off the front foot earlier in points. Haddad Maia spooked Halep into double-faulting another break as she gained a 3-0 lead. The 15th-seeded Romanian roared back from 15-30 down confirming the break with a fine running forehand for 4-1. The Halep backhand return down the line was a weapon on the ad side as Haddad Maia repeatedly hit the slider serve to try to drag the Romanian wide. Halep opened the court with a backhand then banged a backhand down the line leaving the Brazilian swinging at air. Patiently probing the corners and stretching the lanky Brazilian, Halep broke back in the fifth game.

Simona Halep of Romania has won the National Bank Open for a third time, defeating Brazil's Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 on Sunday in Toronto.

"My game during the week was very, very high," Carreno Busta said. Organizers said a total of 237,733 spectators took in the action through the week, a men's tournament record at this venue. Carreno Busta didn't lose a set until he was pushed the distance by Britain's Daniel Evans in the semifinals. The 23rd-ranked Carreno Busta improved to 7-5 in final appearances. "It's just one point, but it was very, very good for the confidence." A Hurkacz double-fault and three missed forehands gave Carreno Busta a 2-0 lead and momentum ahead of the decisive set. Carreno Busta cut off the return with a jumping backhand putaway that electrified the crowd. Hurkacz couldn't put away an overhead shot and Carreno Busta found himself back in the rally. Hurkacz chucked his racket on the hard court in frustration. He earned another early break in the third that forced Hurkacz to press more often. Haddad Maia stayed in the match, winning another game when her high backhanded volley dropped in to make it 5-3. And here I am," said Halep. "So it's a very special moment.

Halep claimed another game before Haddad Maia could serve for the second set. Halep answered right back, taking the next two games before Haddad Maia won five straight points. She then took a 2-0 lead when Haddad Maia's return of her forehand went long. She quickly won the first two games, then fended off Halep on two more for a 4-0 lead. A neat volley at the net left Halep flatfooted and gave Haddad Maia her second game of the set. Haddad Maia seemed to shake off that stunning comeback by Halep to start the second set.

Week in Review: All A's for Halep; Haddad Maia asserts herself (WTA Tennis)

At the end of the day, Simona Halep stood tall in Toronto, but there were plenty of other players who impressed us during a memorable week of action.

In doubles, the pair surged to No.1 on the Porsche Race to the WTA Finals Leaderboard after winning their second WTA 1000 title of the season. Karolina Pliskova: The Czech has a bevy of points to defend over the summer. So I need, sometimes I need a little bit of Jess in my life. But it was the way Haddad Maia asserted herself in Toronto that inspired belief the 26-year-old Brazilian is here to stay. Gauff became the second youngest doubles No.1 in tour history. Halep is now firmly positioned herself for a qualifying run to the WTA Finals, rising to No.4 in the Porsche Race. Like I'm super up and down, and she's usually pretty cool the whole time. The stars finally aligned in Toronto, where she scored two strong back-to-back wins against Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula to make her second final of the season. She was arguably the most successful player during the grass-court season, winning her first two WTA titles in back-to-back fashion, in Nottingham and Birmingham, and following it up with a run to the Eastbourne semifinals. To be clear, Haddad Maia's run to a WTA 1000 final didn't come out of nowhere. The Insider Wrap is a recap of everything you need to know from the week that was. But she felt reinvigorated after pairing with Patrick Mouratoglou in the spring and the results, while not immediate, were strong.
