Dive Brief: 7-Eleven has acquired Skipcart, a white-label delivery startup providing same-day and on-demand delivery, ...
The timing of the deal between 7-Eleven and Skipcart isn’t far after one of 7-Eleven’s biggest competitors made noise in the delivery space. To put that into perspective, as of December 2020, DoorDash had about a million delivery drivers, according to the U.S. Securities and Exchange commission. Skipcart has 2.3 million drivers in its network — covering 98% of the U.S. — and an average delivery time of 30 minutes, according to its website. However, the c-store has quite the range of products, allowing it to fight for diner dollars in both the restaurant and grocery space. Skipcart is valued at $65 million in 2020, according to The Information. According to The Information, although 7-Eleven intends to compete directly with DoorDash after the Skipcart acquisition, there is no indication 7-Eleven will try to offer more than their own inventory.
As retailers and restaurants improve their direct delivery channels, aggregators are challenged to work harder to draw consumers to their marketplaces.
One of the ways that aggregators have sought to differentiate their offerings in the face of increasing competition from direct channels is by offering subscription services, promising free delivery and other deals for a set monthly or annual fee. For instance, quick-service restaurant (QSR) giant McDonald’s announced back in November that it would fulfill delivery orders placed through its app via DoorDash Drive. Convenience store giant 7-Eleven, for one, has been especially proactive in developing its delivery capabilities, making on-demand fulfillment part of the brand’s value proposition for consumers.
Food delivery apps such as DoorDash have gained popularity in recent years. Here is how convenience store chain 7-Eleven plans on competing with DoorDash.
It's a move similar to that taken by the country's second-largest c-store chain, Circle K, which in April partnered with grocery delivery newcomer Food Rocket — which promises delivery 15 minutes, half the time of Skipcart. One of those stores is 7-Eleven, which partnered with DoorDash in 2015 (via PR Newswire). But now, according to news published last week by The Information, the well-known convenience store (c-store) chain will move to compete with its partner by acquiring the delivery startup, Skipcart. The outlet reports that of these apps, DoorDash, the Stanford, California-founded service that went public at the height of COVID-19 (via Statista), has been the most successful both during and post-pandemic, capturing 59% of meal service delivery sales in May of this year.
Quick-service, or 30-minute or less deliveries, are a growing segment of e-commerce and 7-Eleven has been building its capabilities.
