Bundesliga preview: Pressure on Nagelsmann, title vacancy and an ... (The Athletic)

Raphael Honigstein previews the new Bundesliga season, where Bayern are chasing an 11th title in a row and an Englishman is tipped to star.

Sepp Herberger, coach of West Germany’s 1954 World Cup-winning team, once said that “people come to the stadium because they don’t know what the score will be”. But that’s probably no longer true, if it ever was. Gerardo Seoane’s side will have to cope with dual demands of Europe’s top competition and the league before they entertain thoughts of challenging Bayern in any sense. “It’s good to have him back,” Frankfurt (and Bolton Wanderers) icon Jay-Jay Okocha told The Athletic this week. He’s coming back as a fresh player with something to prove and I think he’ll cherish the opportunity that’s been given to him — not just by a team in the Bundesliga, but in the Champions League too.” Both clubs quickly sold out of season tickets despite facing relegation fights, which just goes to show that German fans’ love for their teams remains largely unconditional. The 24-year-old half-jokingly declared himself “the most important signing in the Bundesliga” at his unveiling this week. They are expected to present a solution within the next few days but Haller’s illness has, understandably, gravely affected the mood at Signal Iduna Park. It’s an irrefutable fact that the departure of Robert Lewandowski has opened up the field in Germany’s top flight like never before. “He’s coming back as a more experienced player who has played abroad. Bosses at Bayern’s Sabenerstrasse HQ are optimistic he will mature further and grow into his role in coming months. But just like his superiors, he seems to have learnt important lessons from last year’s relative failure. Czech striker Adam Hlozek is the only big name addition, but on the other hand they haven’t lost a key player either.

3 burning questions heading into the Bundesliga's opening weekend (For The Win)

Leipzig still needs to pick up another attacker to work alongside Christopher Nkunku (a Timo Werner reunion, maybe?). But the race near the top should be competitive. It’s truly a next-man-up mentality for the club. We’ve seen the preseason friendlies. Again, Bayern Munich has won 10 straight league titles, so they’re used to reloading as players age and move on. Lewandowski is coming off a massive 2021-22 season where he had 35 league goals in 34 matches. We’ve seen the international window.

09 Countdown #1: Fear the Wall's Bundesliga Bad Predictions ... (Fear The Wall)

Bring your most baseless predictions for the Bundesliga season, and leave them here, where no one's stupidity will be judged.

Forget about Thorgan Hazard, Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi, because we already have the winger we need. Bayern Munich. Which Bundesliga coach was heralded as the second coming of Jürgen Klopp: Julian Nagelsmann. And who is going to be their coach to lead them to a Bundesliga title once the dust settles? He’s ripe like an avocado, and he just had his interview with Patrick Owomoyela at this season’s training camp! I approached my response to this question as such: if Colin Cowherd were a Bundesliga pundit, what would his take be coming into the season? So which team would love to jettison their coach as soon as someone mutters the word complacency? I also predict that Karim Adeyemi will earn the European Golden Boy award for 22-23, and Marco Reus will have an injury-free season. Bayern turns to their perfect replacement: Mauricio Pochettino... who has just signed a deal with some Mediterranean club. To bring this series to a satisfying end, we thought it appropriate to finish with something a little bit fun that can get all the writers and readers involved. Or is it Freiburg’s year to go all the way in the Europa League? Even BVB got in on the action and hosted their own Red Wedding for Marco Rose this offseason. Perhaps we’ll see Germany’s heavyweights both languishing around midtable in the first half of the season. Look, Bayern Munich are always one game away from kicking up a stink about absolutely nothing (and somehow continuing to win despite it), and it hasn’t felt like Nagelsmann, for all his talent, has won everybody over yet.

Nikola Velickovic is a sports journalist who loves to write and read on all sports. They invested wisely during the transfer window, unlike RB and Eintracht, who didn’t solve their biggest questions and could be in problems if they sell players near the deadline, as they won’t have enough time to react and bring proper replacements. Right now, it seems that Leverkusen and Dortmund have the highest chances of reaching the UCL spot. The same goes for Eintracht and Leverkusen, who have several players waiting for transfers abroad. That is the key to why they can’t challenge Bayern, who has a roster formed years ago, that suffers minimal changes from year to year. The German national championship is rich with goals, teams prefer an attacking-minded style of play with a high tempo and very quick transition from defense to offense.

The 2022/23 Bundesliga stadiums (Bundesliga.com - official website)

The stunning Allianz Arena has been the home of the record German champions since Bayern moved from the Munich Olympic Stadium to its current home in time for ...

Construction on the Wohninvest Weserstadion - its official name as of July 2019 - was originally completed in 1947, but it has since undergone a number of renovations. Add to that the arena’s retractable pitch (it's often used for music concerts) and roof, plus four-screen video cube to ensure every fan has a fantastic view of the pitch itself and the replays, and you have a stadium that is the envy of clubs around the world. With a capacity of 27,599, the ground - which has borne the name of sponsor Vonovia since 2016 - has staged a number of international matches since Germany faced Hungary there in 1922. Having well and truly established themselves in the Bundesliga at the end of the 1990s, Wolfsburg commissioned construction of the Volkswagen Arena in 2001. TSG played their football at the Dietmar-Hopp-Stadion until moving to the Rhein-Neckar-Arena - which operates now as the PreZero Arena - in 2009 as the club's home had to match its soaring ambitions. Since 1985, the stadium has hosted the DFB Cup final each May. In previous years when Hertha have not been in the Bundesliga, they have often played home games away from the Olympiastadion at smaller grounds in Berlin, such as the Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark, the Poststadion and previously at the “Plumpe” Stadion am Gesundbrunnen before its demolition. It is located in the southeast of Berlin in the district of Köpenick and currently holds 22,012 spectators. The ground was opened in 1974 as a result of Dortmund needing a stadium fit to host the 1974 World Cup after the city replaced Cologne. It wasn't until Dortmund's top-flight promotion in 1976 that Bundesliga football was played at the stadium, while six matches of the 2006 World Cup were held at the Signal Iduna Park, including Germany's 2-0 defeat to Italy in the semis. The homely feel at the Försterei was taken to another level during the 2014 World Cup as the club set up 750 sofas on the pitch in front of a big screen so that fans could watch matches from their very own living room in the house of Union. The stadium is now seen as an important part of the club’s - and wider community's - very identity. Leipzig’s Red Bull Arena has stood in its current form since 2004, when it was reconstructed within the city’s old Zentralstadion in a manner similar to Chicago’s Soldier Field. Having provided the backdrop to three FIFA Confederations Cup matches in 2005, the stadium was the only ground in the former East Germany to host 2006 World Cup games, with five played there. Six 2006 FIFA World Cup matches, and four UEFA Euro 2020 games were played at the venue, while the Allianz Arena will welcome five Euro 2024 fixtures, including the semi-final on 7 July. With an overall capacity of 75, 024 for domestic matches and 70,000 for internationals, it is the second-largest stadium in the country. At its heart is the iconic Yellow Wall which is the largest terrace in European football and holds 24,451 fans on its own.

Union Berlin may be Bundesliga underdogs, but here's why they ... (ESPN)

ESPN's Bill Connelly went to Berlin to find out what makes Union Berlin so special. Beer and history are involved.

Elversberg earned promotion to the third division last year by playing by far the best attacking ball in the fourth, and they began this season by hanging five on RWE and beating Bayer Leverkusen 4-3 in the DFB-Pokal. Attack, attack, attack! Forty-two percent of their passes were forward last season (fourth in the league), and they created among the most counterattacking shot opportunities in the league. The successful manager ends up at a larger club with a larger checkbook. A lot of possessions end quickly, and they don't create a ton of shots (they were 12th in shots per possession last season), but the shots they create are typically great. It didn't work in last year's Conference League -- they laid an egg at Slavia Prague in the opener, and while they improved from there, eventual finalist Feyenoord eliminated them with a pair of defeats. Only 26% of opponents' shots came with fewer than two defenders between the shot and the goal, second-lowest percentage in the league. Operating primarily out of a 3-5-2 formation, Union expand in attack and contract in defense, like an accordion. Darmstadt narrowly avoided immediate relegation in their first season up, then meekly finished in last place in 2015-16 and haven't been back to the Bundesliga since. On the final day of the 2021-22 Bundesliga season, a colleague and I were indeed loitering outside of Union Berlin's home stadium, waiting for the team to appear on the balcony to celebrate with fans over its fifth-place league finish, the club's best ever. Bundesliga in 2019 when Hamburg collapsed down the stretch (not the most unique occurrence in the world), then they narrowly survived a war of attrition in the relegation playoff against Stuttgart, advancing thanks to road goals after a scoreless draw at home. They eked out a third-place finish in the 2. When you're hanging out with friends in the front of the Stadion an der Alten Försterei, it probably happens frequently.
