Rangers: Why Benfica failing in Champions League qualifying is ... (The Scotsman)

Rangers get their European campaign underway this evening in Belgium in the third qualifying round of the Champions League.

Rangers would avoid plenty of difficult opponents in the third pot if they were to sneak their way into it. The reason is down to club coefficients. Yet, the Portuguese giants are still required to defeat Midtjylland over two legs before facing the winners of Dynamo Kyiv and Sturm Graz in the play-off round. If they do it will be the first time Scotland has had two clubs at that stage since the 2007/08 season The team in the qualifiers with the second highest coefficient is Rangers with 50.250. If they were to be knocked out at the third qualifying round or in the play-off round, Rangers would take their spot in Pot 3, providing the Europa League finals navigate through their two ties.

McLaughlin then denied Vanzeir to prevent it becoming 3-0 with James Tavernier clearing off the line in added time. In the 71st minute McLaughlin made saves from Adinga and then Vanzeir but as a VAR check stopped play, referee Irfan Peljto decided Teuma’s drive, which hit the arm of defender Connor Goldson, was deserving of a penalty. Van Bronckhorst acted in the 67th minute with defenders Ridvan Yilmaz and Ben Davies coming on to make their debuts, with Barisic and Ryan Jack making way.

Van Bronckhorst has had time in the job, but this is still half a new starting XI. The thing about life at Rangers, however, is there is no bedding in time. Rangers, on the other hand, have a plethora of midfield “tickers” who don’t inject pace or imagination. Kamara barely received the ball ahead of play the entire match and just does not look suited to playing this more advanced role. The second goal came from a harsh VAR-assisted penalty call for a handball on Connor Goldson, but the result did not flatter the Belgians. If anything, Rangers are lucky to still be in the tie. But a rough performance at Livingston in the league opener followed by a lifeless one against Union in Leuven means anxiety is already festering among the support. Ryan Jack looked uncharacteristically off the pace, while Glen Kamara was completely ineffective as a No 10 with Rangers unable to access him.
