UFC 277 results: It's time to see who were the biggest winners (and loser) from last night's "Pena vs. Nunes 2"-led event in Dallas, Texas.

She once again showed why she is without a shadow of a doubt the greatest female fighter in the history of the sport and regained her rightful position at the top of women’s MMA. It was surprising to see Lewis get rocked by his counterpart since the hard-hitting big man had the striking advantage on paper. Look, I agree that the stoppage was early, but Lewis put himself in bad position to get clipped by Sergei Pavlovich, who took advantage of a couple of clean shots he landed to put “Black Beast” on wobbly legs. While the trash talk may now be non-existent prior to what could be their last fight against one another, at least we know we will be in for another treat once the cage door slams shut behind them. In doing so, “Lioness” regained her women’s 135-pound title to once again become “champ-champ.” Let’s not get it twisted, Pena showed a ton of grit and toughness by hanging in the pocket and absorbing several of Nunes’ best shots that would normally take others clean out. UFC 277 went down last night (Sat., July 30, 2022) from inside American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas, featuring not one, but two title fights.

UFC 277: Pena vs. Nunes 2 - Winners and Losers (Bloody Elbow)

Julianna Pena's reign as UFC women's bantamweight champion began with an emphatic win in December. It ended in resounding defeat on Saturday night when the ...

As far as incorrect commentary during a UFC fight goes, the main event of UFC 277 misrepresented the reality of what was happening in the cage on an almost comical level. Mathetha is an excellent striker, however he is not a good wrestler and that gap in his skill set is the main reason his record is 0-2 with the UFC. Mathetha should have spent more time outside the UFC getting wrestling and grappling reps, but his affiliation with UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and the City Kickboxing gym got him moved to the UFC before he was ready to compete at an elite level. Don’Tale Mayes: I know this was a heavyweight fight, but facing a short-notice opponent with less than a year of MMA experience and losing under the UFC banner is not a good look. What he did was control the fight on the feet in the second and third rounds and earn himself a second straight knockout win. Morales is extremely confident in his skills — and he should be — however, as he moves up the ranks and faces more gifted opponents, he’s going to need to close the gaps in his game. Pantoja overwhelmed Perez from the start of the bout and earned the submission win at 1:31 of the first round. Morono is on a four-fight winning streak, the lengthiest run of victories of his UFC career, which began with a split-decision win over Kyle Noke in 2016. The No. 4 fighter in the official UFC flyweight rankings took the fight right to the No. 6 ranked Alex Perez and dominated the fight in every way, ending things 91 seconds into the contest with a nasty neck crank following an impressive back take. While Nunes might not have addressed all those matters with her win over Pena in their rematch in the main event of UFC 277, she answered the most important one — and that was her standing in the present. Alexandre Pantoja: Alexandre Pantoja ended a nearly one-year absence from the octagon on Saturday and he made a statement. The only thing missing from Nunes’ win at UFC 277 was a finish.

Here's everything that happened at UFC 277 last night (MMAmania.com)

Brandon Moreno vs. Kai Kara-France took a round to heat up, but it proved to be a very technical, entertaining contest. Kara-France entered with a smart game ...

Either way, Smith tried to throw some big punches to start the second, and he landed! The win was vicious work for Negumereanu, who really showed new promise in this performance. Finally, one of his many lefts downstairs connected in the perfect spot, sending his opponent to the mat, curled up in a ball. Unfortunately, Dober is a hell of a spoiler, as his incredible chin has never faded away. To his credit, so is Alex Perez! It just wasn’t the former title challenger’s night, however, as the Brazilian blew him out of the water. Moreno’s activity seemed to be keeping him ahead on the cards, but Kara-France seemed to turn it around in the third. The two traded some kicks, and Ankalaev let off one or two slick counter combinations. Perez is accustomed to walking opponents down and putting on the hurt, but Pantoja flipped the script by brawling forward immediately. Hopefully, UFC is willing to let the Brazilian sit with his top contender position. Moreno, meanwhile, offered a couple of new looks, most notably his shifting left hook in attempts to cut off the cage. The question became whether or not Nunes could relax, train appropriately, and perform to the best of her ability. Last night (Sat., July 30, 2022), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) traveled to American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. UFC 277 really felt like a night for the hardcore fight fans.

UFC 277, The Morning After: Amanda Nunes returns UFC to normalcy (MMAmania.com)

When Julianna Pena submitted Amanda Nunes back in Dec. 2021, it was an utterly shocking result. There was no real reason to believe in Pena on paper.

Sure, the underdog won the first fight, but it was a shock for a reason, and the second fight illustrated precisely why with a bloody clarity. Otherwise, the standard Nunes playbook was in full effect. Given Pena’s habit of rushing forward on a straight line, it was a smart move, and it paid off. They’re all believable and can excuse away the night to an extent, but UFC 269 still felt like an aberration. Logically, the first fight was hard to explain. There was no real reason to believe in Pena on paper.

UFC 277: Julianna Peña vs. Amanda Nunes 2 - Fights to make (Bloody Elbow)

All the best, most interesting, and unquestionably coolest fights the UFC needs to book following their latest event in Dallas, TX.

But, Morales found his power strikes in every round and made Fugitt pay for his willingness to keep the fight standing, to the tune of a 3rd round TKO. That should leave the 23-year-old poised for a solid step up next time. Dober just to see if Dober can find a way into the rankings? Instead, if the UFC really is going to do a rematch for Teixeira, I’ll say book Ankalaev vs. He has a clear reason to claim a fight with anyone holding gold at the end of the year. That pushed Ankalaev on to the TKO victory, and the seeming position of no. Unfortunately for him, Jiri Prochazka wants to fight Jan Blachowicz, and there’s a lot of talk about a Glover Teixeira rematch for the belt as well. Volkov seems like a good way for both men to stay in the conversation of the heavyweight elite. The ‘Preacher’s Daughter’ seems like a great fight to see if the 32-year-old can make a quick return to the title and keep her place among the bantamweight elite. As a result, there’s only one fight left to make and it’s a fourth bout against Deiveson Figueiredo. The Brazilian was cageside to see this interim title bout, and after the fight the two men met in the cage and agreed to a possible showdown in December, in Brazil. Is that PPV card actually on the UFC schedule? Plenty of bouts for the City Kickboxing talent to use to reassert his spot as a top contender. If the possibility was lingering, out in the ether, that Julianna Peña might just be too tough and determined for Amanda Nunes to handle after their first meeting, then it also has to be recognized that there was a distinct chance that Nunes might also be way too good for Peña to beat twice. In the wake of UFC 277, however, we’re back to asking a lot of the same old questions.

5 biggest takeaways from UFC 277: Did Amanda Nunes prove ... (MMA Junkie)

What Amanda Nunes' rematch win means, a botched faceoff, and Derrick Lewis' future are among our post-UFC 277 talking points.

It’s also pretty hard to argue all the reasons Nunes shared as to why she was upset in the first encounter. To her credit, it’s clear the gap between Peña and Nunes is much closer than everyone else in the division. She proved her durability is just as strong in surviving five rounds in the rematch with Amanda Nunes, most of which was spent taking a beating. Save for a few dramatic submission attempts, there aren’t many other redeeming elements for Peña (11-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) in this particular bout. Moreno will unify the 125-pound titles with Figueiredo at some point this year or early 2023, and it’s going to be an unprecedented fight. Figueiredo 4 will be a marquee fight, I fear it won’t have the exposure it deserves. Brandon Moreno might be the first true star in the UFC flyweight division. But watching him fight – albeit briefly – felt like this was a diminished version of the UFC knockout record holder. But there are some valid questions to be asked about Lewis after making 25 octagon appearances since his 2014 debut and being stopped in all eight of his losses during his stretch. The fact it wasn’t only hurts everyone in the long run. The nature of Ankalaev’s win unfortunately didn’t make him undeniable, and that’s the frustrating part of this result. Based off what we saw before the injury, I would feel confident in saying Ankalaev was going to win.

UFC 277: Pena vs. Nunes 2 - Unofficial Awards (Bloody Elbow)

Get a unique rundown of all the trophies that should have been handed out at UFC 277 with Dayne Fox's Unofficial Awards.

Most Disrespected: You’d think three consecutive wins in the UFC would keep a fighter from welcoming a newcomer to the organization. Given the dangers we all acknowledge come with the sport, I would think it is uncontroversial to say I’d rather see the referee’s jump in a little bit early as opposed to a little bit late. However, it also took away the opportunity for Ankalaev to secure a highlight reel moment that would have been so beneficial for him in his quest to secure a title shot. Even when they decided not to get rid of the division, they would continue to look at the division as an afterthought. She was quickly in a position of defense after hitting the mat once again, refusing to give in when 99.99% of the world would accept they weren’t going to win at that point. The former title challenger thought he broke his leg in the midst of his fight with Magomed Ankalaev. That wasn’t the case, but he did jack up his leg badly enough that it took him out of the fight, eventually leading to his downfall. Diamond appeared to get the better of the exchange as Cosce stumbled halfway across the cage, but the sequence also gave Cosce enough distance that he had the time to regain his composure. I understand he has a kickboxing background, but it’s not like he was an established kickboxing champion in the vein of Alex Pereira. Diamond has potential, but more seasoning was needed before he made the jump. With just three wins against a low level of competition, Diamond didn’t look like he was ready for the UFC in the least. Best Newcomer: Hamdy Abdelwahad was the only one of the three newcomers who found success in their debuts, but credit goes to Abdelwahad for also making it a memorable debut. Start Typing a Resume: It’s plausible the weight miss from Joselyne Edwards will give Ji Yeon Kim one more opportunity to prove she belongs in the UFC. Not only was the weight miss a factor, but Kim being willing to move up a weight class so she could stay on the card was a real gamer move. Biggest Jump in Stock: It came down to Alexandre Pantoja and Sergei Pavlovich. Ultimately, I had to go with Pavlovich given he was lesser known of the two, entering the fight with Derrick Lewis as a largely unknown product amongst the majority of viewers.

UFC 277 results: Matches to make for 'Pena vs. Nunes 2' main card ... (MMAmania.com)

UFC 277 went down last night (Sat., July 30, 2022), featuring a thrilling night of fights spearheaded by the rematch between Julianna Pena and Amanda Nunes.

Currently sitting at No. 4, Ankalaev is in the perfect spot to get the next shot at the strap. If Pantoja wants his shot at the strap, he is likely going to have to sit out awhile ... perhaps until the first quarter of 2023. A fight against Volkov seems ideal because even if Pavlovich does break into the Top 5, I don’t think he will get matched up against anyone ahead of him. After Moreno disposed of Kai Kara-France, it was guaranteed that he would face division kingpin, Figueiredo, for a fourth time. They are the No. 1 and No. 2 best pound-for-pound best female fighters on UFC’s roster and they really don’t have any clear-cut contenders in their respective division who warrant a title fight at the moment. A trilogy fight against Pena is possible since “The Venezuelan Vixen” pulled off one of the biggest upsets in UFC history less than one year ago, but there is also a potential trilogy fight against Valentina Shevchenko lurking.
