"He was small and he wasn't winning," Ole Iversen, who coached Vingegaard when he was a child, told DR television from the tiny Thy Cykle Ring club in the northwest of the country. The biggest prize in cycling comes after a long road for Vingegaard, who hails from the village of Hillerslev and worked in a fish market as a teenager. "This is probably the greatest thing that has happened in the history of Danish sport," 59-year-old Allan Olsen told AFP.

2022 Tour de France prize money: Who got paid, and how much the ... (VeloNews)

Today's top WorldTour pros are paid more and race less, so the prize money doesn't count as much as it used to, but it's still a nice cherry on the cake.

The Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España pay out about half, respectively, to what the Tour shares with the peloton. Teams are hunting out younger, cheaper riders, and spending money to develop them in-house with the hope they will discover the next Tom Pidcock or Jonas Vingegaard racing at some third-tier team. Before the advent of cycling’s million-dollar salaries, prize money, primes, critériums and other payouts such as start fees were vitally important to a rider’s income. Today’s pros race half the number of race days, or even less, than a top pro a generation ago or so would race. Unlike tennis and golf, for example, where athletes earn most of their income from seven-figure prize money checks and sponsorship deals, cycling’s biggest stars earn hefty salaries that can reach well into seven figures. Tradition holds that the winner forfeits his winner’s prize and splits it out with teammates and staffers. Other podium spots bring prizes, with €25,000 for the winners of the major jerseys. The day’s most combative prize earns €2,000, so it pays to attack until the very end. Ineos Grenadiers, third with Geraint Thomas and the winner of the team competition, won €240,610. Seven parts go to the riders, and another portion is divided among the staff that includes soigneurs, chefs, mechanics, drivers, and other backroom staff. Vingegaard received the largest individual check for winning the yellow jersey, with this year’s first-place prize at €500,000. Upon cancellation, you will have access to your membership through the end of your paid year.

Eye-witness: Rasmus Nowak Franklin on an occasion that saw the Tour de France champion crowned Danish sporting royalty.

He’s a quiet, modest, family man - and maybe not the greatest with words - but he’s probably the best bike rider Denmark has ever seen, and one of its greatest athletes too. Standing there in his yellow jersey, the crowd gave the loudest roar of them all as a final send-off to their new icon. Vingegaard stepped onto the balcony to an endless sea of roaring people. Having passed through a crowded city that was dressed in yellow for the occasion, he would arrive to a packed Rådhuspladsen, where the crowds exceeded tens of thousands. Until a few years ago, it didn’t win a lot of bike races, either. The prince dressed in yellow stepped out of the dimly-lit room and into the light.

TOUR'22: Breaking Down Where/How Jonas Vingegaard Won the ... (PezCycling News)

Now that the dust has settled on the 2022 Tour de France, Spencer Martin has had time to look at the 'big picture' on how the Tour was won.

Spencer Martin authors the cycling-analysis newsletter Beyond the Peloton that breaks down the nuances of each race and attempts to bring a logic-based approach to cycling coverage. Sign up now to get full access to all the available content and race breakdowns. It isn’t clear if he is capable of, or wishes to, riding in this manner. After all, he is a far more talented rider than either of those former Tour winners and has already dominated extremely difficult mountain stages. This breakdown shows us that Vingegaard, after losing time in the first week, dominated both Pogačar and Thomas over the rest of the race. Another questionable decision was his UAE team chasing back breakaways to both get and hold onto the Yellow Jersey in the first week. One has to imagine that a major reason for this fading was his excessively aggressive style over the first nine stages when he was needlessly chasing wins or sprinting for minor placings at the end of every stage. However, after watching this Tour, we shouldn’t be so sure this will be as simple as Pogacar showing up and displaying more patience. However, under closer inspection, Vingegaard matched or outrode Pogačar every time the race went uphill, finished even with him in the time trials, and only lost small chunks of time over the cobblestones (due to a mechanical) and via time bonuses. It also shows us that Thomas, despite putting in one of the best rides of his career, lost time on every course type, which tells us that he was thoroughly outmatched and had no choice but to race for the final podium spot. This tells us that Vingegaard is a worthy champion of the events and simply outrode Pogačar over three weeks and also hints that Pogačar returning to win the race in the future could be more difficult than some slight strategy adjustments like most pundits are suggesting. This is a prime example of how Jumbo’s strong squad helped Vingegaard, but also highlighted some of Pogačar’s inexperience.
