“And then the other thing is when you have a young group of pitchers, to have a guy that you know, every fifth day, is going to take the ball, he's going to go out and he's going to give you innings. In the end, it’s hard to call the transaction anything but a success. It’s also the second time they’ve won a game 1-0 in 2022, both in games started by Quintana. Prior to this season, they hadn’t done that since June 18, 2018. He struck out two in a 1-2-3 first, then another in a 1-2-3 second. It’s understandable if Pirates fans view that as a worthwhile risk, but the only opinions that will really matter are those in the Pirates’ front office. The trade deadline always looms large for veterans on a one-year deal putting up the numbers Quintana has.

José Quintana Pitches a Gem in Pittsburgh Pirates Shutout Victory (Rum Bunter)

In game two of their three-game weekend series, the Pittsburgh Pirates shutout the Miami Marlins 1-0 as José Quintana pitched a gem on Saturday night.

This brought the struggling Yoshi Tsutsugo to the plate. The lone run of the game was scored in the 6th inning. Bednar would slam the door otherwise, recording a pair of strikeouts in the 9th. He generated nine swings-and-misses and was a nice bounce back start after Quintana had allowed nine runs in 10.1 innings pitched across his last two starts. Quintana was in control from the start on Saturday, retiring the first seven batters he faced. After kicking off their post-All-Star Break schedule by getting blown out by the Miami Marlins, the Pittsburgh Pirates shutout the Marlins 1-0 on Saturday night.

Quintana throws gem amid swirling trade rumors (MLB.com)

PITTSBURGH -- As first pitch neared, PNC Park was inhospitable for baseball. The sky was dark, gray, ominous. Rain fell. Lightning struck. Players hid.

There was also the fact that Quintana spent a lot of time on the bench. Regardless of when and how Quintana’s time in Pittsburgh comes to an end, between his production on the mound and his influence in the clubhouse, it’s hard to deny that the lefty’s impact was golden. Combine these ingredients with this outing being Quintana’s first of the second half and Shelton’s cautiousness was justified. Quintana could be involved in one of them. On Saturday, Quintana was in vintage form. Of that, Quintana has no control. “He shares so much of his knowledge and wisdom with us,” said Roansy Contreras in June through team interpreter Mike Gonzalez. “He’s always out there with us in our bullpens. The veteran, who accrued 10 years of service time earlier this year, has been invaluable for a team defined by its youth. He’s been Pittsburgh’s best starter this season, and his impact for the Pirates begins, not ends, with his left arm. The tarp was removed. I just want to keep throwing the ball well. The sky was dark, gray, ominous.
