Russian missiles strike Odessa port day after grain deal, Ukraine says (The Washington Post)

A Ukrainian official called Saturday's attack a “spit in the face” of the United Nations and Turkey which brokered the grain export deal.

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. Russia appears set to resume ground offensives, with Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu telling troops on Saturday to intensify attacks “in all operational sectors” of Ukraine. U.N. chief António Guterres urged Moscow, Kyiv and Ankara to ensure “full implementation” of the commitments they made “on the global stage,” his office said. “The Kremlin continues to weaponize food," the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget A. Brink, said Saturday. The strike imperils an agreement that U.N. and Turkish officials, less than 24 hours earlier, had hailed as a breakthrough after months of negotiations. It said air defense systems shot down two other missiles in the attack, which the U.S. ambassador to Ukraine described as “outrageous.” The deal depends in part on Russian promises not to attack Odessa and two other ports involved in the shipments. Before the war, now nearing its sixth month, Ukraine was among the world’s major exporters of grain. Other elements were expected to take weeks to put in place, they said. Anton Gerashchenko, an adviser to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, shared an image on Telegram that appeared to show smoking rising from the facility. U.S. and European officials have accused Russia of blockading the exports as leverage, as Moscow blamed Western sanctions and played down the food crisis. Air raid warnings rang at about 11 a.m. as the sounds of explosions rocked the city.

The result has been a massive, growing surplus of grain remaining in Ukraine amid a global food shortage. Ukraine is usually one of the world's leading grain exporters, but the blockade has prevented the country from shipping its product. Russia has reportedly taken control of more than one-fifth of Ukrainian cropland and the country has been accused of stealing hundreds of thousands of tons of Ukrainian grain products—critical to Ukraine’s economy.

Profit said he works most with solid state, because he said that’s what he finds the most. Profit said the machines that line his warehouse, which was formerly the training facility for Old School Wrestling, include classic and modern cabinets. Though he started Prime Arcade Sales and Repair as a side business, Profit said it turned into his full time job organically. “The machine that got me into arcades in the first place was Dance Dance Revolution,” he said. The first arcade that I had, had one in the business, that’s what drew me there in the first place.

Meanwhile, Turkey and the United Nations must fulfill their roles as guarantors by holding him accountable, and the United States must send weapons Ukraine needs to protect its ports. On Friday, Russia’s defense minister raised a hungry world’s hopes by signing an agreement with the president of Turkey and the secretary general of the United Nations, according to which Moscow committed to facilitate resumption of large-scale grain shipments from Ukraine’s Black Sea ports. Not only is it still in Ukraine’s economic interest, but one goal of Russia’s attack was likely to provoke a Ukrainian pullout, after which Moscow would blame Kyiv for the consequences. At the same time, Ukrainian officials were wise to announce after Saturday’s attack that they will continue pursuing the agreement, which would have taken some time to implement in any case. Less than 24 hours later, on Saturday, Russian ships launched four long-range missiles at the largest of those ports, Odessa, two of which Ukrainian air defenses intercepted — and two of which caused some structural damage, though no destruction of grain or human casualties. Saturday’s events were not surprising to those familiar with President Vladimir Putin’s record, in this war and others.

World leaders condemn Putin's Odessa attack after grain deal (EUobserver)

World leaders have condemned a Russian missile strike on Ukraine's Odessa seaport, after a landmark deal to resume grain exports was reached.

really makes us concerned," Turkish defence minister Hulusi Akar said on Saturday, according to AFP. Ukraine's foreign affairs spokesman Oleg Nikolaev described the attack as "Putin's spit in the face" of the UN chief and Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who made "enormous efforts" to reach the grain agreement. UN chief Antonio Guterres also condemned the attacks, arguing that ensuring the "safe" export of Ukrainian grain and related products to global markets is key. "In the seaport in the city of Odessa, on the territory of a shipyard, sea-based high-precision long-range missiles destroyed a docked Ukrainian warship and a warehouse with Harpoon anti-ship missiles supplied by the US to the Kyiv regime," Russian defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said at a daily briefing on Sunday. Ukrainian officials said Russian missiles hit one of the silos in the port city of Odessa and another fell in an area close to the silo, "but there was no problem in the loading capacity and capability of the docks, which is important, and that the activities there can continue," Akar said. German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock said this "cowardly" attack shows that Russia's signature to the grain deal "counts for little at the moment".
