What does a student have to do to become a Formula 1 driver? (Paddock Magazine)

Becoming an F1 driver is no easy feat. In fact, there is a high chance you can get into any other sport before qualifying for F1.

So, you must train your brain to process information and react fast. Moreover, make it a point to talk to race sponsors and show them your expertise on the track. It takes hard work, commitment and resilience to get to F1 races. Exposing yourself to such an environment gets you more excited about being a racer and puts things into perspective. So, you can’t make a great racer if your body cannot withstand the pressure for that long. Remember to start with lower formula races and work your way to the top. Since you’ve established that becoming a Formula 1 driver is no walk in the park, what are the next steps to ensuring you become a qualified driver? They are the best and least expensive way to learn everything that F1 racing entails. Besides, you cannot replace your love for cars and speed with a football and a pitch. So, don’t expect to be offered a multi-million dollar car from the onset. Of course, you don’t want to fail your physics class, yet help is just a click away. Although it takes a lot of work, car racing is one of the most fulfilling sports to get into.

Will F1's 300 race starts 'curse' hit Hamilton? - The Race (The Race)

Going deeper still and looking at all the F1 drivers who've won races after 200 starts puts Hamilton's likely future record into context. FERNANDO ALONSO. Most ...

He’ll be a slightly older 33 at that point but it’s hard to imagine his career not lasting that long and he’s not yet at his performance or achievement peak. Max Verstappen is likely to hit 300 GPs in late 2028 or early 2029 and will still be in his early 30s and almost certainly still at Red Bull by then. The youthful underdog heroics at Jordan and Stewart might’ve been his real F1 peak in personal performance terms. Plus the odd veteran who only got a proper top-team chance at the last moment. Maybe Mercedes has been deposed too comprehensively in 2022 and won’t be back in winning form before Hamilton calls time on his F1 career. Had he stuck around, he’d have reached 300 GPs in Russia last year, at the age of 36. Early 2022 has been a low. He excelled at Hockenheim, and the eighth, sixth, seventh and 10th places that followed that win were more indicative of where his and Benetton’s 1997 level was. Unfortunately the Honda engine they were lumbered with was in its woeful phase then. After all, what may be his final F1 win at Monza last year was glorious punctuation in a run of largely miserable results. Hamilton’s going to become only the sixth driver in F1 history so far to start over 300 races. McLaren’s mid-2010s plunge down the order turned out to be more than just Honda’s fault.

F1 Grand Prix practice results: Sainz fastest in French GP on Friday (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Carlos Sainz was fastest during French Grand Prix practice on Friday, the 12th round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, leading a Ferrari 1-2.

Verstappen beat that by 0.01s with 1m34.172s, before Sainz was the first of the frontrunners to switch to softs, unleashing 1m33.322s – highlighting a 0.85s delta between the compounds in similar track conditions. Sainz stayed third, over three tenths off the pace, ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes, Pierre Gasly’s updated AlphaTauri and Perez. Top spot then became a straight Verstappen v Leclerc fight. Leclerc beat his teammate for P1 by 0.186s with 1m33.136s just before the halfway point, but Sainz responded on a second push lap with 1m32.527s. That proved to be the fastest lap of the day. His teammate Charles Leclerc was fastest in FP1 but Sainz set the fastest lap of the day in FP2, with Red Bull’s championship leader Max Verstappen in third. Verstappen set the bar at 1m34.991s, running soft tyres from the start of the session, half a second clear of teammate Sergio Perez (who suffered a big spin at Turn 3 early on and later straight-lined a chicane) and 0.83s clear of Leclerc at the halfway point.

What the teams said - Friday at the 2022 French Grand Prix ... (Formula 1 RSS UK)

The drivers and teams report back on all the action from the opening day at the Circuit Paul Ricard, for the Formula 1 Lenovo Grand Prix de France 2022...

Tomorrow will be a challenge and Sunday will be too, given the heat and the temperature, but I can’t wait to put myself in the game.” It was definitely warm out there and not the easiest conditions: still, it is always nice to drive a Formula One car and help the team with learning the set-up for the track. “It was a challenging Friday for us especially driving in these extremely hot conditions in France. We tried to adapt the car as best as we could to deal with these high temperatures and focused on tyre management and cooling down during the two practice sessions. It’s been a day of trying the new parts on the car and trying to understand them and figure them out for tomorrow. “Sometimes you want to try and go to the limit and that’s what I did and carrying a lot of speed into that corner is helpful in terms of lap time and in that sense maybe it was a bit too much. We tried Soft and Medium compound tyres plus high and low fuel and we have a good read on information to make the right adjustments on the car for tomorrow. “We were trying quite a bit today with some updates to the car and I’d say we are still trying to figure out the best way to set the car up with it, so still learning. Now we need to work to understand what we tested today and go through all the data to be able to put it together for Quali tomorrow. There are things we still need to adjust, but hopefully we can finetune them in FP3 to be able to make it into Q3 in Qualifying. I didn’t feel crazy degradation, so that’s positive, but the race will be hotter so we will have to see.” This is the first time that one of the race drivers has had to sit out an FP1 session and Lewis had his work cut out trying to recover the lost time - he wasn't particularly happy with where the car was and we need to work on that overnight, but we've got a pretty good idea of where we want to go on setup. We also only had a short stint on the soft tyre but hopefully tomorrow we are able to pull it all together and be in the fight for qualifying and the race on Sunday.” “We had a delay in this session due to a bit of an issue with one of the roll bars but it was nothing major.

Formula 1 DFS Picks and French Grand Prix Preview (Rotowire)

Alpine is my favorite of that group but likely likely be the most popular, so that is a good area to get a bit more creative in larger field tournaments. Ferrari has had both a less reliable car and worse management on race day for much of the season, but they ran their most complete race of the season in Austria. There doesn't seem to be a clear favorite between Leclerc and Verstappen based on pace, so if you believe in the power of momentum (and a little salary saving) this might be the week to opt for Leclerc. News of Carlos Sainz's grid penalty makes it a bit more difficult to build a Leclerc-Ferrari Captain-Constructor stack, and I like the construction to pay down at constructor to jam in top-tier drivers. It's doubtful Russell will remain at such a strong value after the Sainz news, though. Much of this section will mirror the DFS picks, at least from an expected performance standpoint. The most interesting driver in the tier could become Russell, depending on how the Mercedes performs in qualifying. The track itself offers a bit of everything with technical sections, high-speed corners and a pair of long straights. From there, it's a bit easier to get different in the mid-tier. Lando Norris likely lost a position at Austria due to a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits. Alpha Tauri has been among the more disappointing teams this season but is also touting big upgrades for this event. Ferrari has won consecutive races, yet still enters the French Grand Prix 56 points behind Red Bull in the constructor standings. Mercedes will be a team to watch. However, Leclerc remains 38 points behind Max Verstappen for the lead, and if we have any hope for a competitive championship through all 22 rounds, Ferrari and Leclerc need to make up ground before the summer break.

F1 French GP: Verstappen leads final practice at Paul Ricard (autosport.com)

Sainz and Leclerc finished the session in second and third, three and five tenths down respectively, followed by Hamilton in the Mercedes, the Briton a second behind on Verstappen's time. Aston Martin languished down the bottom with Lance Stroll 18th and Sebastian Vettel last, the pair being split by the second Haas of Mick Schumacher, who spent the middle part of the session in the garage. Sainz, who is set to start from the back of the grid after taking a new Ferrari engine, finally overhauled the Red Bull in the final 10 minutes by virtue of a 1m32.626s lap, proving quicker in the first and third sector. Perez got to within half a second of the Dutchman on his second attempt, until Ferrari's Sainz split the two Red Bulls with a 1m33.217s effort. Sergio Perez got the final hour of practice at a toasty Le Castellet underway, the Red Bull driver also the first driver to get a tentative time on the board with a 1m33.628s on medium Pirelli tyres. The reigning world champion immediately took eight tenths out of Perez' time to go top with a 1m32.837s on mediums and then improving to a 1m32.808s, just three tenths off Carlos Sainz' best time from FP2.
