The city doesn't set standards … we have bylaws that'll fall within those standards. "The first stumbling block would be the standardization of, well, what kind of cover would it be? We have told parents that their child is dead and never coming home. I think the best solution isn't to try to shift responsibility from the city to a homeowner," MacPherson said. Las Vegas water district OKs proposal for pool-size limits (Las Vegas Sun)

As Lake Mead's water level continues to drop, the Las Vegas Valley Water District is taking new steps to conserve water through pool-size limits.

“We believe it is possible to provide water for human needs while also conserving water for plants and wildlife,” Moan said. “They can provide $30 per square foot of surface area, they can replace existing landscaping, and they can increase their size, but residences are not having that same opportunity if you limit to 600 feet.” Members of the pool industry and conservationists were divided in their reception of this new ruling. and a lot of stuff seen in these new homes is not even used for recreation. The commission Tuesday unanimously approved a new ordinance prohibiting the Las Vegas Valley Water District from serving residents with pools with a total surface area of over 600 square feet. “We have a lot of pools that exceed 3,000 square feet…

County Commission votes unanimously in favor of pool size limits (Las Vegas Review-Journal)

The Clark County Commission voted 6-0 in favor of a 600-square-foot limit to new single-family residential pools.

Entsminger, though, said there were flaws in the analysis of the data put forth by the pool industry. Under this alternative, pool size would be allowed to increase with lot size up to a cap. With the home and pool-permitting process often taking multiple months, Zimmerman is worried that many existing projects won’t meet the Sep. 1 deadline. “Nobody questions building codes for earthquakes in San Francisco. Water scarcity is our natural disaster in Southern Nevada.” Exemptions would be granted for pool owners that also installed an automatic water cover, which the pool industry claims can reduce evaporation by over 90 percent. The Clark County Commission voted 6-0 Tuesday in favor of a proposed change to the Las Vegas Valley Water District’s service rules that would prohibit new pool construction exceeding 600 square feet at single-family residences.

The Easthampton Parks and Recreation Department was not able to find the 5 to 8 lifeguards they needed to open up for the season.

Late last month, the city council signed a letter of support for proposed upgrades to the pool, including making it more accessible to those with disabilities. “So yeah, it was a little weird that there were not enough high school students to police the pool.” They cited the pandemic canceling lifeguard certification classes, and lifeguards finding new, higher paying jobs when pools were closed as the reasons why. It takes about 17 days to fill and prepare the pool. Easthampton Parks and Recreation said it all comes down to a lifeguard shortage. The city reimburses lifeguards for their certification course.

Lindesha Doctor spent her time by the pool helping her 4-year-old daughter, Skyler Bostick, learn to swim in the pool’s lazy river. Lineberger Pool will stay open six days per week for the rest of the summer. “Oh, it’s going to save us so much more time,” she said. “Almost every day,” replied her mother. Meanwhile, the swimming pool at Erwin Community Center Park has been permanently closed due to structural issues. Last year, Her said they were coming upward of three times per week. The pool is open from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays. The pool hit capacity on its first weekend opening, starting with Saturday, July 9. Gastonia usually opens its two public pools in early June once school lets out for summer. The COVID-19 pandemic kept folks out of the water on Farmer Street for the past two years. In January, the city began making plans to get it back open.

Entrance to the cooling station will be on the building's Union Street side. "Following site visits and conversations with two potential contractors, the city decided to move forward with repairs instead of intensive reconstruction that would not have been completed until the end of October," Williams said in an email. Eventually, Petersburg plans to invest in what city spokesperson Joanne Williams called "intensive reconstruction" to the pool. The sinks and toilets in the bath house were also repaired. Like so many other services and activities, the Farmer Street pool fell victim to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. So Petersburg opted for repairs now and hold off on the major work until later. The water feels good." Parents were close at hand to offer guidance, advice, encouragement and the occasional towel to the soaked children as they got out. Heaven is renting someone else's pool (The Washington Post)

Swimply lets you borrow a dream and adopt a stranger's backyard lifestyle, an hour or two at a time.

“It’s nice to get the money but I love to share.” “It’s the perfect little spot,” he says. Swimply is a modern variation on “Queen for a Day,” the 1950s and 1960s Cinderella game show that bestowed a night on the town and avocado-tinted appliances on a lucky woman. Swimply extends hosts a $1 million liability insurance policy and $10,000 in property-damage protection, but many of them, like Tradewell and Jim Battan, find the best insurance is to remain on the premises during rentals. The place rents for $65 to $85 an hour, depending on the number of guests and time of week. Also, Battan’s wife, Lisa, operates a large rescue-animal sanctuary, to the delight of guests. Battan happens to be — and this is his precise title — the Numero Uno Swimply Host, netting $170,000 since first listing Paradise in September 2020 and netting 386 five-star reviews. Consider the hectares and hectares of fences and hedges, often erected at considerable cost to transform a yard, and certainly a pool, into an owner’s sylvan duchy. Like Tinder or Hinge, it is a chance to date a pool. “This is a win-win for us.” The day before, Tradewell hosted a birthday bash for 25, and banked $500. It was for 5-year-olds, not a college frat. Last summer, he began listing his pool on Swimply, the Airbnb of aquatic recreation: “Mainline Paoli Pool Party/Vacation for the day.” The two families split the $140 fee for a two-hour frolic.

Should You Let Your Dog In The Pool? Experts Say “No” (Pool Magazine)

People love their dogs and man's best friend fits right in around the home. Consequently, many feel that their swimming pool is a natural extension.

It’s always a good idea to give your swimming pool a liberal dose of shock after dogs swim in it, the same as you would after a large pool party. When weighing the pros and cons, there are reasons why some pool owners allow their dogs to swim in their pool. Another good idea is to purchase a pool alarm that will notify you if your pets accidentally get into the swimming pool. Keeping the pool clean for swimmers after a pet has been in the pool should be of top priority. This is in addition to their fur which can clog your filter and make it tougher to keep your pool clean.” Is it safe for family and guests to swim in the pool with dogs?

Tampa Bay backyard pools are for rent, so I took the plunge (Tampa Bay Times)

SEMINOLE HEIGHTS — The sound of dogs barking signaled we were at the right place. We were at somebody's house to use the swimming pool.

I enjoyed the relief of temperate water on another day of apocalyptic weather, the break from the barrage of worldly distractions. Swimming can be a vulnerable experience, disrobing, splashing around, hoisting oneself out of the water like a slain Great White. Doing it at someone else’s house is strange, yes, but no stranger than flopping at a hotel or community pool full of other slain sharks. Like so many, the Summers went remote in the pandemic. She showed us around, pointing us to foam noodles and a grill. We were at somebody’s house to use the swimming pool. After surfing the app, a photographer and I decided to visit the Tampa home of Laura and Tanner Summers, both 32, for a few hours of Investigative Leisure. Did I just invent a new series? So far, the Summers are only out a couple inflatable floaties (thanks, kids). They’re always there to make sure nothing goes awry, but they leave swimmers alone. A Seminole Heights mural beamed from over the fence. The idea was born when Bunim Laskin, then 20 and the oldest of 12 children, noticed his New Jersey neighbor’s pool often sat unused. She and Tanner charge $40 an hour for up to five guests with an extra $5 per person thereafter. Swimply rents more than 25,000 pools across the U.S., Canada and Australia. Costs range from $15 an hour to several hundred. The result was social media-worthy.
