The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2022: Winners So Far (Eater)

Geranium by chef Rasmus Kofoed, one of Denmark's most celebrated culinary establishments, has earned the title of the “World's Best Restaurant” in the first ...

The results were announced during a ceremony in London that was hosted by Stanley Tucci. Prior to the ceremony, the World’s 50 Best organization confirmed that restaurants in Russian would not be eligible for the list this year given the country’s attacks on Ukraine. A spokesperson told Eater: “We do not hold any restaurants or bars individually responsible for the actions of their government and we acknowledge all those in Russia who have bravely denounced the actions of their leaders. The only restaurant from Africa, a continent of 1.28 billion people, is a South African spot that experiments with Japanese techniques. Noma occupied the top slot in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, and 2021: The World’s 50 Best organization instituted a rule change in 2019 that restaurants would not be eligible to win a second time, but Noma still managed one last win after it closed and moved to a new location. Kenya’s Wawira Njiru received the Icon Award. Here now, the complete list: Located on the eighth floor of Copenhagen’s national football stadium, it announced last year that it would be dropping its already small quantities of meat on the ~$437 menu to focus on seafood and vegetables. However, by including Russian restaurants or bars in our high-profile lists, we would be tacitly supporting hospitality-driven tourism to Russia, boosting revenue in the country and indirectly supporting the government through taxation ... As an organization, we do not believe it is right to promote Russia as a dining or drinking destination at this current time.” That change effectively booted 2021 list-makers White Rabbit and Twins Garden off the list. In the list’s 20-year history, only European or North American restaurants have occupied the “best” restaurant slot. No South American or Asian restaurants have ever moved to the top spot, and there are no restaurants on the top 50 list from the Middle East. There are no restaurants on the list from India, a country of 1.38 billion people. In addition to the list of the top 50, René Frank of Coda in Berlin was named the World’s Best Pastry Chef; Leonor Espinosa the World’s Best Female Chef, and Josep Roca took home the World’s Best Sommelier Award. The Art of Hospitality Award went to NYC’s Atomix: Atomix was also the highest-ranking U.S. restaurant on the list, at No. 33. The 2022 World’s 50 Best Restaurants List Geranium by chef Rasmus Kofoed, one of Denmark’s most celebrated culinary establishments, has earned the title of the “World’s Best Restaurant” in the first year that Rene Redzepi’s Noma fell out of eligibility. The World’s 50 Best List, years after having revamped its voting body and rules following criticisms of sexism and favoritism toward Euro-leaning, male-run tasting menu spots — and Copenhagen’s Noma winning all the time — has again elevated an elite Copenhagen tasting menu restaurant to the number one slot.

Noma cedes the title of best restaurant in the world to fellow Copenhagen restaurant Geranium.

The organization has faced criticism since its inception for an inability to accurately portray the breadth and diversity of a global dining scene. Attempting to encapsulate the best of the world’s dining scene in a list of just 50 restaurants is an ambitious project, to say the least. The World’s 50 Best Restaurants honorees for 2022 were announced at a ceremony in London today, crowning Denmark’s Geranium as this year’s top dining establishment in the world.

It was a strong year for Spain, Italy and Mexico on the 2022 list, but a poor one for Asia - and a Kiwi chef has been knocked off the list entirely.

After taking out two of the top 10 spots in 2021, the highest placed restaurant in Asia was Tokyo’s Den, which moved to 20th after placing 11th last year. Of course, if you are planning on eating at any of the top-placed restaurants, you’ll need to save your pennies. At number two is Central in Lima, Peru, which moved up from fourth on the 2021 list. Odette in Singapore, which was eighth in 2021, came in 36th this year, while last year’s 10th-placed restaurant, Hong Kong’s The Chairman, is 24th. In 2022 they reach the zenith of their careers.” Restaurants from those countries take out the lion’s share of the top 10 restaurants in the world on the prestigious 50 Best Restaurants list for 2022, announced on Tuesday morning New Zealand time.

(Russian voters were included; the voting took place before the war in Ukraine, according to William Drew, director of content for World’s 50 Best Restaurants.) Even during these difficult times arising out of Covid-19, we continue to remain committed to keeping you informed and updated with credible news, authoritative views and incisive commentary on topical issues of relevance. This year’s list also features an unusually high number of new entries, 28 in total, and 20 in the 51-100 list alone. Not coincidentally, the Worlds 50 Best introduced Middle East and North Africa’s 50 Best Restaurants earlier this year. Among the other dedicated awards, one went to #CookforUkraine founders Olia Hercules and Alissa Timoshkina as ‘Champions of Change.’ Another London restaurant, Brat, came in at 81, despite landing in the No. 3 position on the Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards earlier this year. With Eleven Madison Park also in the emeritus category, the top US restaurant is New York’s Korean tasting-menu destination Atomix at No. 33. It now features in a ‘Best of the Best’ category which includes Mirazur in the South of France, which won in 2019 and was the world’s best restaurant for two years, because the awards were cancelled in 2020 as a result of the pandemic. Some past No. 1 winners, including Jean Roca of El Celler de Can Roca in Girona, Spain, popped in throughout the ceremony to present awards. Last year, Noma won the No. 1 spot. Denmark's Geranium was crowned as the best restaurant in the world, Central in Lima, Peru, ranked second and Disfrutar in Barcelona, third.

The husband-and-wife team were married just four days after Central’s first appearance on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list in 2013. Jordnær, which means ‘down to earth’ is the new addition from Denmark to the World’s 50 Best list. “I haven’t been eating meat for the last five years at home, so to no longer use meat on the new menu was a logical decision and a natural progression for Geranium.” After that restaurant closed in 2011, they joined forces to open Compartir in Cadaqués, Catalonia, followed by Disfrutar – their most ambitious project – in 2014. From the start of the 2022 season, Geranium removed meat from its menu to focus solely on vegetables and seafood. Chefs Virgilio Martínez and Pía León’s flagship restaurant, Central, is an ode to Peru in all forms. Ranked at #18 is Alchemist, a two-star Michelin ‘holistic’ dining experience led by Chef Rasmus Munk with a menu that involves 50 courses or “impressions” that include light, theater, art and sound. “All odds were against us,” explained Chef Kofoed in a speech during the ceremony that took place in London and was hosted by American actor Stanley Tucci. The current 17-course menu costs $436. This is the complete list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. The current menu at Geranium, “The Summer Universe,” costs $440 per person and lasts for a minimum of three hours. “The menu is a reflection of me, of who I am and how I am evolving as a chef and as a human being,” Kofoed said.
