Murphy and Tate fought a competitive fight, but the damage on their faces would suggest otherwise.
Tate dropped to 19-9 and is 1-2 overall since returning from a five-year-long retirement. Murphy also appeared to break Tate's orbital bone as "Cupcake" dealt with bad swelling and a cut under her right eye. Lauren Murphy is far from finished with the UFC women's flyweight elite.
Officially, the fight will be for the UFC's vacant 155-pound title, although the majority of the sport essentially views Oliveira (33-8) as the defending champion. Islam Makhachev has won 10-straight fights and is 11-1 overall in the UFC. Zuffa LLC.
Makhachev (22-1) is widely viewed as the biggest threat to Oliveira's dominance. Oliveira went on to submit Gaethje in the first round at UFC 274. Officially, that result went down as a nontitle fight for Oliveira. He has won 11 consecutive bouts, a streak that includes 10 finishes.

Former featherweight title challengerBrian Ortega (15-2, 1 NC, fighting out of Los Angeles, Calif.) returns to the Octagon for the first time in almost a year. The Pennsylvania-born, German-based middleweight finally got in deep on a takedown and dragged his fellow Dana White’s Contender Series grad to the deck late in the second, quickly moving to dominant positions and landing big shots. The 29-year-old moves to 7-2 in the UFC and 20-3 overall with the victory. Since returning to the UFC through a win on Dana White’s Contender Series two summers ago, “The Hanyak” has now gone 6-0-1, forcing his way into the rankings in the light heavyweight division and establishing himself as a dark horse veteran to track in the 205-pound weight class. As the Hawaiian swarmed, connecting with a big right hook, Lungiambula covered up, prompting referee Dan Miragliotta to step in and wave off the festivities. She also kept things standing throughout, out-muscling Tate in the clinch and mixing in a couple takedowns of her own. Now 8-0 in the UFC in his home state, Burgos picks up a second straight win, upping his record to 15-3 overall, while Jourdain falls to 4-4-1 in the UFC and 13-5-1 overall with the loss. In the third, Jourdain came out chasing down Burgos, unloading a storm of offence that put the ranked fighter on his heels. From there, “Danger” unleashed a storm of elbows that split the Chinese athlete open before locking in a triangle choke and putting his opponent to sleep. In the second, “The Tibetan Eagle” found his range and took it to Schnell, freezing him in place with a series of left hands and short, framed-off elbows that had referee Jacob Montalvo taking a close look. Following a close first round, Li came out a little more aggressive and active in the second, pressuring Salikhov, landing short shots when he could while looking for opportunities to uncork his right hand.
The UFC formally announced the bout shortly after Yahoo Sports first broke the news.

"I think it was a very tight fight, and I already told him we can run it back any time," Rodriguez said.

Marc Raimondi and Jeff Wagenheim break down the main event in Long Island and evaluate what's next in the featherweight division and more.
The problem is that in Tate's debut at 125 pounds, the UFC gave her Lauren Murphy, herself a former bantamweight and arguably the physically strongest fighter in the division, save for champion Valentina Shevchenko. The only issue is that this loss might position Tate as a gatekeeper, meaning her next opponent might be an up-and-coming fighter, like a Maycee Barber, Tracy Cortez or Amanda Ribas. An exciting matchup would be Tate and Natalia Silva, who looked fantastic in her UFC debut last month. He slowly worked his way out of the submission try, and after fending off an armbar and a leg attack, he got the fight back to standing. Ortega is one of the most resilient fighters in the UFC, and the contest was a total tossup before it ended abruptly. Rodriguez is Mexican and Ortega is a first-generation Mexican American. Long Island made no sense for that bout, when it very well could have happened somewhere in Southern California or the Southwest in front of thousands of avid fans. Matt Schnell was staggered several times but finished early in the second round of his flyweight fight with Sumudaerji. Had the referee jumped in at any of these moments, with Schnell on sea legs, few fans would have complained. Islam Makhachev for the vacant lightweight title at UFC 280 in October. It seems realistic that there could be an interim featherweight title fight between Rodriguez and Emmett before the end of the year, with Volkanovski fighting the winner early in 2023 to unify the belts. When Algeo opted to back off and let Burns stand, it took the sagging Brazilian a while to climb to his feet. He wasted no time putting Algeo in massive trouble, taking the fight to the canvas early in Round 1 and sinking in a triangle choke. So, while Rodriguez was not attacking the shoulder with a submission or a strike specifically, the shoulder was damaged during an actual offensive move by Rodriguez and a defensive move by Ortega. However, Rodriguez was attempting an armbar from the bottom position and Ortega injured his shoulder while trying to defend said submission attempt. Rodriguez was likely to get a title shot against Alexander Volkanovski with a win.
One moment, Brian Ortega was bringing the fight into his world. The next moment, Yair Rodriguez was celebrating.
Both men expressed interest in a rematch after the unusual finish. The injury interrupted what had been a fast start on the feet followed by several minutes of more labored clinch work. “And I think in the moment he was trying to get the arm out from there, I saw him doing a face and was like, OK, something happened.”

Shoulder injury brings unfortunate end to UFC on ABC 3 headliner in the opening round.
"I already told him that we can run it back anytime. "He was doing a great job keeping me on the cage," Rodriguez said after the fight. Rodriguez (14-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) was hoping to earn a shot at reigning UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski with a victory, but with the unexpected result, it's unclear if that will materialize. "I tried to clear the leg, and then my arm just popped out." Once on the floor, Rodriguez worked with an open guard and tried to tie up his opponent's right arm. Unfazed, Ortega walked through the shots to deliver big punches of his own and then moved to the clinch, driving the action to the cage.

On the UFC on ABC 3 main card, Yair Rodriguez defeated Brian Ortega due to an injury TKO, and Amanda Lemos stopped Michelle Waterson-Gomez by submission.
Murphy blasted a takedown, and scored a couple of punches before Tate scrambled up to her feet. Neither fighter was willing to concede the takedown, so the match resumed on the feet. With about a minute to go, Michelle realized a takedown in the center of the cage, but was only able to land one punch before getting swept as the round ended. Back in open space, there was a lot of measuring and moving around going on, coupled with a lot of missing going on. Tate started to pump her jab to back off the aggression, and Murphy then shot in for a takedown. It was starting to look bad for Burgos, but he managed to clinch up on the back to stop the onslaught. Michelle honorably admitted to tapping out and the match was over. It was a mother right hand that dropped Muslim, and some ground and pound sealed the deal. The UFC’s #9 rated 125-pounder, Matt Schnell, rallied through allllll the adversity to put the #12 rated, Sumudaerji, to sleep with a triangle in the second round. The referee was on the wrong side to see the tap, but good sportsmanship prevailed as Lemos unlocked the hold, and Waterson-Gomez admitted defeat. The opening act was a bit pedestrian, but Li hurt Salikhov with a massive right in the second, and refused to let him off the hook. The finish came as Waterson-Gomez shot in for a single leg and Lemos defended it, and then jumped right onto a guillotine.
The UFC handed out seven post-fight bonuses after Saturday's card with all but one stoppage winner getting an extra check.
Amanda Lemos (12-2-1 MMA, 6-2 UFC) was the biggest favorite on the card, so perhaps her win over Michelle Waterson (18-10 MMA, 6-6 UFC) in their strawweight fight wasn’t a big surprise. But Schnell was in zombie mode and walked through them. Li Jingliang (19-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC) was in a dogfight with Muslim Salikhov (18-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) that looked like either fight could steal the momentum. Soriano landed a big counter left that put Lungiambula on the mat, and within three punches the fight was over. Bill Algeo (16-6 MMA, 3-2 UFC) put it on Herbert Burns (11-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) enough in the first round that Burns was done before the second. Simon took his back, then got his neck, and soon after Shore was tapping his unbeaten record away.
Ortega (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) suffered a dislocated shoulder in the first round of his featherweight headliner with Yair Rodriguez (14-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) on Saturday ...

Is this the best lightweight title fight the UFC could have made? Will Charles Oliveira reclaim his UFC lightweight title against Islam Makhachev? Troy Taormina ...
We all know Oliveira as a submission machine, but what makes him so dominant of late is his improvement in striking. On the mat, he's shown dominant wrestling, and he's already faced and stifled decorated grapplers such as Arman Tsarukyan and Nik Lentz. How bettable Makhachev is will depend on prices closer to fight time, but from a first look by the numbers, he's already a justifiable favorite. In his previous three bouts, Oliveira has been dropped in the first round but rallied to get a KO or submission finish to win. Still, it would be definitive evidence that his Dagestani countryman, training partner and biggest fan, former champ Khabib Nurmagomedov, has been correct all along in insisting that Makhachev is the future of the 155-pound division. Oliveira got where he is -- tied with Israel Adesanya for No. 3 in the ESPN pound-for-pound Top 10 -- by finishing Chandler, Poirier and Gaethje in succession. A victory over the other would be a magnificent accomplishment for either man. I have Volkanovski as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world right now, and I have Oliveira at No. 4. Marc Raimondi: Take note of a few sequences in Oliveira's fight with Gaethje at UFC 274 in May. Gaethje landed shots and Oliveira dropped to the canvas. It would be dangerous, but it is his bread and butter. Oliveira has recently rounded into a dangerous Muay Thai striker with power in his hands and underrated kicks and knees. Was Oliveira hurt, or was he trying to bait Gaethje into going down to the ground with him, to Oliveira's domain? Oliveira has cleared out the other top names in the division -- Dustin Poirier, Justin Gaethje and Michael Chandler. Makhachev was the obvious next contender.
It wasn't the way he wanted it to happen, but Yair Rodriguez is climbing the ladder in the Ultimate Fighting Championship's featherweight division ...
Burgos’ total deficit in significant strikes is the third largest in UFC history for a fighter winning by decision. Algeo also held a 28-to-10 advantage in significant strikes, which included a 24-to-6 edge on the ground. Algeo battered his foe with ground-and-pound until Burns was unable to return to his feet following a standup at the 1:50 mark of Round 2. 73: Combined significant strikes landed by Schnell (34) and Mudaerji (39) during a wild second stanza that ranks among the top contenders for “Round of the Year” in 2022. 6:25: Total control time for Burgos, including 5:26 in the first two rounds. By comparison, Penne landed 63. 102: Significant strikes landed by Murphy. By comparison, Tate landed 85. Trey Ogdenat UFC on ESPN 34. That included an 84-to-26 edge in significant strikes in Round 3, but it wasn’t enough to offset Burgos’ grappling in a majority decision loss. Simon submitted the previously undefeated Regardless of how it went down Rodriguez is back in the win column for the first time since Oct. 18, 2019 and remains a serious contender at 145 pounds. By comparison, Ortega landed 26 total strikes.

After the ref called an end to the fight in the second when Burns looked completely exhausted, the Brazilian was noticeably emotional and the announcers speculated he could have another serious injury. You have to feel horrible for Herbert Burns. After starting his career in the UFC with a solid 2-1 record, he missed just shy of two years of his career recovering from a torn ACL and several failed bookings. In the opening minutes of his bout Saturday, it seemed like he had Bill Algeo dead to rights in a triangle choke. After a short-lived run in the UFC a decade ago, Dustin Jacoby had to fight eight times before getting an opportunity on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2020. There had to be a flip side to Schnell’s win and Mudaerji was it. While he seemingly had Volkanovski finished with a submission in September he could not seal the deal on the champ.
