Google says prolonging the life of your computer with ChromeOS Flex can save 40 million tonnes of e-waste annually.
That said, it may not be suitable for everybody with many organizations relying on Windows-only or macOS-only applications to get work done. Google claims “software bloat, clunky hardware, and security vulnerabilities can cause unwanted damage” in an analogy it compares to sun damage. The new operating system is available to download on 295 certified models, and even more that have not been officially tested by Google’s engineers.
Google has released the stable version of its ChromeOS Flex, which will work with many older Macs to turn them into Chromebooks.
As mentioned, ChromeOS Flex can be downloaded for free for individual users. The free OS can be installed on older Macs that have stopped receiving support from Apple. Some of the older Macs that Google details in the list of certified models for ChromeOS Flex include the mid-2010 13-inch MacBook. Apple has listed this model as obsolete, and may not offer support for it. ChromeOS Flex turns older Macs or PCs into a Chromebook when installed.

Acer, HP, LG, and Toshiba devices tend to work just fine with ChromeOS Flex installed, while a couple Dell and Apple devices are prone to minor hiccups. Google has published a list (opens in new tab) of the 400-plus certified devices; if your PC or Mac isn't listed that doesn't necessarily mean it won't run ChromeOS; it's just that Google hasn't tested it. It effectively brings your old PC or Mac back as a device to rival the best Chromebooks.

The operating system is certified to work on over 400 devices, including Macs released after 2010 with 16GB of free storage. By Sarah Brown Lebanon Local. The school board heard a somewhat-glowing report regarding student improvement during its July 14 meeting.
If families opt out and the laptop is broken, they will be “on the hook” for the bill. ♦ The board heard a summer school report by Coordinator Ryan King, indicating that by July 13, 93 incomplete courses were made up by high school students. The Class of 2024 started with 52 percent on-track, and ended with 69 percent on-track, 17 percent increase. The Class of 2023 started last school year with 60 percent of its students on-track, and ended the year with 69 percent on-track, a nine percent increase. “I think part of this is (about) holding our student body accountable,” Lewis said. Lewis said he’ll run some models for how the two insurance options would look. In many cases of damage, staff are able to easily ascertain whether it was accidental, he said. Lewis gave an example that in just the first week of summer school, 12 screens were broken. Lebanon has a high percentage who fall into those categories, so it would be expected the District would fall below the state average, but Lebanon actually ranked commensurate to the State average. After all, when you look at the code names of the processors in Snapdragon Chromebooks (SC7180 and SC7280), it feels like it is clear that the 7180 is the 7c ...
With that in mind, I then looked a bit deeper into the Snapdragon 7c+ Gen 3 spec listing, and you can likely guess what I found there: NVMe support as a new, updated feature. This made me a bit curious, and after seeing it, I began searching for this feature in the Snapdragon 7c and 7c Gen 2 product listings from Qualcomm. And to my surprise, neither of those SoCs supports it. After all, when you look at the code names of the processors in Snapdragon Chromebooks (SC7180 and SC7280), it feels like it is clear that the 7180 is the 7c Gen 1 and the 7280 would be the 7c Gen 2.
