Sports That People Played in Ancient History (Discover Magazine)

Major League Baseball's (MLB) best teams are heading toward playoff runs and New York City Football Club is the reigning Major League Soccer (MLS) Cup champion.

During the first reign of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, they banned the sport since they considered the game immoral. If they are successful, the carcass is dropped back to the end of the field. Judging from the sport’s descendent, ulama (a ball game played in Mexico still played to this day), the rules were probably like racquetball, where the aim is to keep the ball in play. The team with the highest number of points wins. The basic rules are players drop an animal carcass at one end of a field, and horse riders scrum around the carcass as players fight to grab it. More specifically, according to Tradfolk, there are specific terms for parts of the game. Though the rules are simple, the training and discipline to become a sumo star is hard. And some believe the sport was a gift from the Creator to use as medicine. The game is played over six periods of eight minutes. The national sport of Argentina, juego del pato (pato), is a game played on horseback that combines elements of polo and basketball. The NBA made $7.4 billion and the NHL made $4.43 billion. The players ranged from 100 on the field to as many as 100,000 players.

The Harlequins Foundation is the charitable arm of Harlequins Rugby Club. They work with vulnerable children and young people within the Harlequins London Heartlands to positively impact their lives through the power of sport. Facilitators can quickly track a group’s progress in terms of skills and identify the main strengths and areas for improvement. The Sports Cluster enables a diverse range of organisations from all sport disciplines to use a common language for impact measurement, share best practice, and harness the power of sport to build essential skills. Together, the Skills Builder Partnership and The Harlequins Foundation support a network of sports for development organisations and encourage them to use the Skills Builder Framework to measure their impact in developing essential skills. This article introduces the use of the Skills Builder Framework across planning, programme delivery and reporting.

“I think that we’re put in positions to help others,” McCormack says. “I learned to overcome that loneliness, to reach out for help academically and athletically,” McCormack says. “It was very apparent to me that I needed to showcase what they could do,” McCormack says. Partnerships with the University of Idaho and the Seattle City Council will build programs that incorporate education with sport. She would excel as an athlete, complete her degree and be a new example of what was possible for kids on the reservation. Rise Above. She points to the black T-shirts in the room, the adults and coaches who stand around the huddle of kids. But when she was 14, a homicide rocked her small community and placed McCormack in the center of the chaos. McCormack recognized the significance of a Native American woman playing Division 1 basketball immediately. Levi Horn, a former Chicago Bears player who grew up in Hillyard and attended Rogers High School, looks at the kids and says, “First and foremost, I love every single one of you.” Horn is the campus safety specialist at the high school where he spent his underclassmen years on the edge, teetering between athletic potential and the struggles of poverty and instability at home. McCormack gestures to each one of them and reiterates, “We care about you.” Former college basketball coach Mike Jarvis told the young athletes, “You are made in the image of God. You are all special.” Detlef Schrempf, a former Seattle SuperSonic and three time NBA all-star, described himself as an awkward, lanky youngster who didn’t fit in until he found basketball. They listen, heads cocked, to Jaci McCormack, founder of the sports non-profit

Aislinn Bennett to be two-sport college athlete, even if that wasn't ... (Milford Daily News)

Thanks in large part to an untimely ejection, former Milford High standout Aislinn Bennett is set to play both hockey and lacrosse at Salem State.

“That was a great moment,” Bennett said. “Aislinn is a whole different player in comparison to last year,” Abbriano said. “Since I play defense, I don’t usually score a ton of goals,” she said. “I was trying to get my goalie off the ice and get an extra skater on. “I’m so excited and I’m pretty lucky I picked a school where I could also play lacrosse,” Bennett said. “All the credit goes to my dad,” Aislinn said. “Playing for Shrewsbury was great,” said Bennett, who credits her freshman year defense coach and current club coach, Ray Monroe, with helping her during the college recruiting process. You could see she wanted to play college hockey.” “The night before our banquet, Aislinn told me she’d reached out to the Salem State coach,” Milford coach Kacey Abbriano said. That resulted in a red card, which meant she was ejected from her last high school game ever, as the Tigers grabbed the win. “I was so upset. Sure enough, Bennett committed to play hockey at Salem State University in January of her senior year.

The car can do it, so it is over to him.” “People like Ott Tanak are going to be extremely strong there and we know Hyundai have a longer gear ratio on these high speed events, whereas we went for a more average set of ratios for the season. It is impossible to know where your real pace is until the rally starts. “We will be hoping that Craig [Breen] can perform strongly here. An O-ring costing 10p had failed on Loeb’s car, which caused the fire that prevented the Frenchman from restarting the engine. “You can’t drop any time in Estonia. If you are not on the ball on a stage, you are not going to be fighting for the win, so that is the hard challenge.

Sport is being transformed by cloud power (The Register)

Fast, scalable data analytics capabilities are within touching distance of every team ... Sponsored Feature Cloud computing is having a transformational effect on ...

One of the most exciting applications of cloud technology in sports relates more to the business side than the performance side. The Football Association of England, for example, is deploying cloud technology to prepare both its men's and women's teams for upcoming tournaments. Several teams are looking to cloud-based technology to cater the viewing experience at the level of the individual fan. "It helps with the optimisation of teams and athletes and also with the experience of fans. They can pick and choose and then integrate the additional services they want into their application." Cloud compute power is democratising the ability to do really advanced data analysis, opening that to organisations of every size and background." But it is the cloud era that has taken sports analytics to a whole new level. Cloud-based analytics has, he believes, contributed a lot more than just number crunching power to the elite: "We're now seeing smaller sports organisations benefit that maybe traditionally haven't had the resources necessary for data analysis," he notes. Perhaps cloud's biggest impact has been around the enormous analytical and data handling power that can now be brought to bear on the performance of both individual athletes and teams. Baseball executive Billy Beane of the Oakland Athletics took the science to a new level in the early 2000s with his 'moneyball' approach to identifying underrated players with a view to inexpensively building a more successful team. Fed to cloud servers, this data is the basis of improving not just an athlete's performance but their overall health, including forecasting the likelihood of future injury, all as part of helping to achieve optimum results.
