Denmark got their first points on the board in Group B to give themselves a chance of progressing to the quarter-finals.

The ball comes back out to Harder at the other post, and she nods into the net from a few yards out to give Denmark a crucial lead! That leaves space for Holmgaard to have an effort on goal, but despite receiving the through pass, she takes too many touches, and Korpela rushes off her line to make a crucial save to keep the scores level! It may have not been her best showing in a Denmark shirt, but the Chelsea attacker still showed signs of brilliance during the match. 9’ - KEY SAVE! - Thrige advances down the right from the wing-back position, and she flashes a low cross into the box, which Nadim just about gets the slightest of touches on. The Danes showed a lot of attacking impetus, but lacked the quality finishing when they needed it. Denmark will be relieved to have secured the victory today, as they came up against a resolute Finland side, who defended well.

CB: Natalia Kuikka - 6/10 - Part of the pack that surrounded Harder at every given opportunity. RB: Emma Koivisto - 6/10 - Tried to get forward as frequently as possible, flashing a cross-cum-shot narrowly wide in the first half. Unable to give Finland's forward line a great deal of service. Won an important back-post header in the second half, read the game well throughout. Came alive in the final 25 minutes, embarking on a charging run and sliding Holmgaard through, before popping up in the right place at the right time to head Denmark into the lead. Linked up well with Veje for another Denmark opening, but otherwise quiet before being replaced on the 64-minute mark. Suffered a nasty head injury in the final five minutes. Provided the dangerous deep cross from which Denmark opened the scoring. Won plenty in the air, dealing comfortably with any Finland long balls. Very comfortable and composed on the ball inside her own box. Harder and Denmark finally made the breakthrough with 20 minutes remaining. Nadim and Katrine Veje both saw efforts held by the Finland goalkeeper before the half was out.

Denmark finally scored a goal, but the three points were the most important thing. However, with 18 minutes left, the Finland goalkeeper was finally beaten as a Holmgaard header hit the crossbar and Harder pounced to nod in. But Anna Signeul's side, beaten 4-1 here by Spain, got to half-time level, the best Denmark chances both denied by Tinja-Riikka Korpela, who first clawed a Nadia Nadim shot off the line before thwarting Katrine Veje after a superb one-touch passing move.

Pernille Harder breaks deadlock for Denmark to edge past Finland (The Guardian)

Pernille Harder's goal 18 minutes from time proved the difference as Denmark beat Finland 1-0 in the Group B game in Milton Keynes.

Moments before, Harder had been substituted after a collision with Emma Kolvisto, and left the field holding an ice pack to her head. For all of Denmark’s dominance with possession and clear-cut chances, it had taken bit of luck in the latter stages of the game to break Finland’s regimented back four. The defensive strategy was to combat her tricks by cutting off any and all spaces for the forward to drive into.

With confidence dented by a comprehensive defeat to Germany, Denmark temporarily seemed to have lost their identity before Harder's heroics.

Their best chance, a one-one-one for Karen Holmgaard after brilliant work from Pernille Harder, was smothered by Finland’s brilliant goalkeeper, Tottenham’s Tinja-Riikka Korpela. Who quite knows whether that was indicative of any great quality (and, frankly, who cares – entertainment is king), but Denmark and Finland allowed the game to instantly become stretched. Finally Harder found a little space and buried her header into an empty net.
