With the peloton still over nine minutes back, the German is in virtual yellow but the pace behind is bound to rise soon enough. And now Bettiol has popped - no surprise given his big effort prior to the demonstation and the climb. Leknessund was struggling on the back but has returned to the fold as the gradient eases as they approach the ski resort of Megeve. Schultz opened his sprint from the wheel of Sanchez but Cort timed his surge to perfection to deny the Australian. The lone leader Alberto Bettiol is onto the final climb of the day, which is 19.2km long at 4.1% with its summit less than two kilometres from the finish. The road continues edging uphill now to the finish. I was losing my place in the group in the last couple of kilometres but suddenly it was all back together and I was there and able to take it in the sprint. There's a fair bit of hesitation behind which will play into the hand of the Spanish veteran. The Australian catches Sanchez just beyond the summit while the young American from Movistar digs deep to join them behind. Either way, Kamna will soar into the top 10, perhaps even top 5 today after his efforts in the breakaway. It looks like he crossed the line 8'54" down on Magnus Cort, which means he holds onto the yellow for eight seconds. So, disappointment for Germany's Lennard Kamna of Bora-Hansgrohe, who nevertheless rises to second place on GC.

Tour de France 2022: Cort wins stage 10 after protests force delay ... (The Guardian)

Magnus Cort snatched a thrilling stage win in Megève while Lennard Kamna missed out on the yellow jersey by just 11 seconds.

36km to go: There are protestors in the road ahead of our lone leader Bettiol. Several people are sitting in the road, and at least one flare has been let off. Now there is a shot of the breakaway group I think, having been stopped, in order to reinstate the time gaps. Producing carbon bikes, and all the kit, is a huge generator of carbon emissions. You’d have to suspect it will be the latter. 25km to go: Bettiol rolls through the intermediate sprint at Passy-Marlioz, and takes 20 points in that competition, not that he cares. This is going to be a massive battle for the win. 15km to go: Bettiol holds his lead at 31”. The Alps loom into view as the chasing grinds up the climb. 5km to go: Sánchez, on what looks a slightly flatter section, takes a gulp from his bottle and keeps grinding the hardest gear that he can. Also, as I mentioned earlier, the production of the bikes and all the kit (while it may be improving in terms of environmental impact) is another thing to add to the pile. Suddenly it was all back together and I was able to take it in the sprint. Pogacar puts in a big effort to the line, sprinting and trying to nab a second or two from his GC rivals. I was on the limit for so long on this climb, and luckily I had Bettiol up front and he was really strong, which meant I could sit on, and save some energy ... somehow I was losing the group a couple of times in the last kilometres.

Cort takes breakaway sprint to win Tour de France stage 10 at Megève (Cyclingnews.com)

Pogačar loses time in overall classification as breakaway rider Kämna moves up to second.

As the road tilted upward, Bettiol had to relent, leaving Van Baarle, Kämna, Jorgenson, Thomas, Sanchez, Wright, Lekneussund, Zimmermann, Velasco and Cort in the lead. As the group made its way up, Cort carefully marked a surge from Jorgenson, Velasco and Van Baarle and was towed across to the leaders who had already caught Bettiol. After a tense ten minutes, the race got back underway, with Bettiol staying clear for the sprint and Laporte leading the chasers across 17 seconds later. The move did not stick, however, and the 25 were back together with 44km to go and with seven minutes in hand, it was clear the winner would come from this group. Kämna moved into second place ahead of Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), who remains at 39 seconds, with the Ineos Grenadiers pair Geraint Thomas and Adam Yates dropping to fourth and fifth. The 148.5-kilometre stage was dominated by a 25-rider breakaway that gained enough time to see 21st-placed Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) briefly in the virtual maillot jaune.
