The Liverpool fans enjoyed that one. It's like a different game this second half, with both teams feeling each other out for the first time. Heaton is on in his place. De Gea's night is up. With the angle against him, he fires one at Heaton, stinging the keeper's gloves. Manchester United 3-0 Liverpool 83, Alexander-Arnold fizzes a free kick ball into the United wall. Things we learned from Man United v Liverpool (Manchester United)

Manchester United made a stunning start to life under Erik ten Hag with a 4-0 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool to lift the Bangkok Centenary Cup.

The only worry was when he appeared to sustain a problem after coming to the edge of the box and turning sharply to ensure he kept the ball in the area. Eric Bailly was outstanding as the Reds held Jurgen Klopp's men at bay, showing athleticism and aggression and a determination to defend. Whether that was probably down to personnel, with skipper Harry Maguire unavailable due to a knock, is another matter but it showed some versatility from the South American. The left-back slot in the second half went to new boy Tyrell Malacia, who made a couple of eye-catching early interventions, including chopping the ball on a run that was appreciated by the crowd. Three goals without reply in the first half was a testament to the fitness work at Carrington and in Thailand, with a real desire to press from the front. Savage kept the ball tidily, helping to screen the defence, while Iqbal's balance and movement impressed. It is on to Melbourne next, with more challenges to come. The third, from Martial, was the Frenchman at his best, displaying great composure to lift over the Liverpool keeper, when in a one-on-one situation. One crunching aerial challenge on James Milner left the former England midfielder requiring some attention and the veteran avenged the tackle with a blatant block on the United man soon afterwards. The keeper looked assured in possession, and kept a clean sheet during his time on the field, as the only Red to stay on for the start of the second half. David De Gea was off his line sweeping up confidently on occasion, and was quickly in action, making a near-post save with his feet that has become one of his trademarks. Our first look at the new home shirt was certainly a positive one as Ten Hag's XI looked fit, fresh and with something to prove. There is clearly no such thing as a friendly in Scott McTominay's book, especially when Liverpool are providing the opposition.

Ten Hag on Man United preseason rout of Liverpool: We made ... (ESPN)

Erik ten Hag says he saw "mistakes" in his first preseason game in charge despite Manchester United's 4-0 rout of Liverpool.

It was so open and it was pretty clear where we made the mistakes." We have to [be careful]." "Of course we are satisfied today because I think that was a team with a great spirit and we know we are just starting and things went wrong, clearly," he said.

Manchester United 4-0 Liverpool: Erik ten Hag's debut assessed (Sky Sports)

Even before Manchester United's three-goal first-half flurry, it was clear the tenets Erik ten Hag had been meticulously drilling into his players ...

Fluidity in the front three is likely to be a key part of United's play under Ten Hag this season. Pellistri and Amad combined well for the fourth goal, finding a way through Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk to put the game to bed. The duo made their senior debuts together against Young Boys in the Champions League at Old Trafford last season under Ralf Rangnick and will be hoping to get more first-team minutes under Ten Hag this season. Some will say the mass substitutions could have been a reaction to going 2-0 behind, but it was likely to have been the plan all along. Liverpool's big-hitters, Fabinho, Darwin Nunez, Andy Robertson, Thiago, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold were all introduced with 30 minutes to play. But the 22-year-old looked comfortable on that right-hand side and was far more confident in his overall play. The early signs were promising. But an underwhelming start on his return to England eventually saw Sancho shifted back to the left as Marcus Rashford struggled for form and fitness. The German boss started a second-string side before making 10 changes after 30 minutes. With pre-season under a new manager focused predominantly on physical and tactical conditioning and getting players to believe in your principles and philosophy, United's players scored well. Thankfully, Martial's second coming could be better than his first. It made for a compelling watch.
