In all, a special U.N. war crimes tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague and courts in the Balkans have sentenced close to 50 Bosnian Serb wartime officials — including their war time leader Radovan Karadzic and his military commander, Ratko Mladic — to more than 700 years in prison for the Srebrenica killings. The war itself left over 100,000 dead. Rosensaft said it was “critical” for the international community to formally commemorate the Srebrenica genocide every July 11 “not just out of respect for its victims, but as a public countermeasure to the repeated efforts to deny this genocide.” During the process, the half-decomposed remains were ripped apart. When the remains are identified, they are returned to their relatives and reburied in the memorial center and cemetery just outside Srebrenica each July 11 — the anniversary of the day the killings began in 1995. “The international community failed to offer adequate protection to the people of Srebrenica and, as part of that community, the Dutch government shares responsibility for the situation in which that failure occurred and for this we offer our deepest apologies,” Ollongren said.

Leaders of Serb Republic of Bosnia, or Republika Srpska, however, continue to downplay or even deny the 1995 Srebrenica massacre and hail Karadzic and Mladic as national heroes. A special U.N. war crimes tribunal in The Hague found Bosnian Serb wartime president Radovan Karadzic and his military commander, Ratko Mladic, guilty of crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide in Srebrenica and eventually extended their initial long-term prison sentences to life imprisonment. The Srebrenica massacre is Europe’s only acknowledged genocide since the Holocaust and is the only one legally defined as such by many countries and two United Nations courts.

ANALYSIS - How to safeguard the memory of Srebrenica (Anadolu Agency)

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, the most brutal phase of the three-and-a-half-year genocide committed against Bosniaks in Bosnia ...

Several cities and state parliaments have declared 11 July as Srebrenica Remembrance Day in North America. Many of these population centers have sizeable Bosnian diaspora communities, and the local authorities were receptive to such initiatives. Bosniak leaders should exert efforts to ensure that international institutions pay tribute to Srebrenica by marking 11 July as Srebrenica Remembrance Day. After each year's commemoration, a pressing question is how to suppress genocide denial and safeguard the memory of Srebrenica for the next generations. Over the past decade and a half, there have been a variety of commemorative practices abroad. OHR's decision is a much-needed, albeit belated, effort to curb the growing denial of the Bosnian genocide. On 11 July, the remains of 50 Bosniak victims will be laid to rest in Srebrenica.

News and Press Release in English on World and 1 other country about Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding and Protection and Human Rights; published on 11 Jul ...

I promise you my passion, my personal support and the support of the United Nations and my Office, the Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide. As the first woman to serve in the role of Under-Secretary-General and Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, I have made women a key priority in the implementation of my mandate. Next week, I will meet women drawn from all over the world to discuss the role of women in atrocity prevention. Women play an essential role in the prevention and protection of atrocity crimes. Accountability, and reparations for atrocity crimes is important not only to obtain justice for the victims and rebuild public trust in justice and security institutions, but also to prevent future crimes. Today’s conference is an important opportunity to honor the victims and survivors of the Srebrenica genocide. They have never given up searching for their loved ones, they have been resolute in their intention to seek truth and justice at the international level. The Mothers have demonstrated, in word and deed, their commitment to accountability. The green in my flower of Srebrenica, represents the hope for the future these generations raised by the Mothers of Srebrenica hold. I urge the three Members of the Presidency to act on their official, public commitment. They also gave me the flower of Srebrenica, which I have carried every day ever since, to remind me that the eleven petals, every stitch made by hand, represents 11th of July, the day we shall commemorate tomorrow, when a Genocide happened here. It also means recognizing the suffering of all victims and survivors."

Srebrenica Anniversary: Bosnia's Ethnic Tensions Are Back (Foreign Policy)

Twenty-seven years ago this month, Srebrenica fell to Bosnian Serb forces. It had been under a bitter siege for three years, suffering starvation and constant ...

But in Potocari, where the Srebrenica memorial is housed, some of the names of the dead are engraved in stone. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross, as time goes on, the number of bodies identified is decreasing. It found that a minority of respondents in Republika Srpska (34 percent) support Dodik’s declared intention to withdraw Republika Srpska from Bosnia’s state institutions, with 35 percent favoring independence for Republika Srpska. However, avoiding interethnic violence (72 percent) and focusing on the economy (69 percent) were seen as more pressing issues than promoting Serb unity (49 percent). And there are still the bones of 1,000 people who are not accounted for, whose remains lie somewhere in the deep forests or the haunted earth. Even amid the war in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has “found time in his busy war schedule to hold a call” with Dodik, Cancar writes. Some believe the Russian leader is pushing to make Bosnia a new front with the West. Serbian citizens, including pro-Russia groups in Republika Srpska, have organized massive support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. There is also the element of shared faith: the Orthodox brotherhood that also played out during the Bosnian war. A former mining town in eastern Bosnia—once known as a site where infertile women came to drink its miraculous waters—Srebrenica is now synonymous with the terrible dark events that began on July 11, 1995. The Bosnian Serbs rejected the declaration and joined forces with Serbia, the largest of the Yugoslav republics. A former mining town in eastern Bosnia—once known as a site where infertile women came to drink its miraculous waters—Srebrenica is now synonymous with the terrible dark events that began on July 11, 1995. What has led to today’s renewed crisis is the fractured political system set out by the Dayton Accords in 1995. In March 1992, following Slovenia, Croatia, and Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina—made up of a mix of Bosniak Muslims, Catholic Croats, and Orthodox Serbs—declared independence.

Srebrenica: 27 years after and still fighting genocide denial (Middle East Eye)

On the anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, survivors are still searching for their loved ones and battling for the truth.

The same court found the former Bosnian Serb commander, Ratko Mladic, guilty of genocide in Srebrenica, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in 2017. To borrow Elie Wiesel’s words: “For the dead and the living, we must bear witness." There are no similar restrictions in the other cases of genocide. Furthermore, German courts concluded that genocide was committed in both northern and eastern Bosnia in 1992. “They were dumped by the road, in some ravine by the river. His initial sentence was extended to life in prison on 20 March 2019, when the international appeals court rejected his appeals. Those who managed to survive the " death march", sometimes spending months in the woods, saw the bodies of hundreds of Bosniaks, often their own brothers, fathers, relatives, and neighbours along the way. One of them is Elvir Muminovic, who was only 17 when he disappeared in the area of Konjevic Polje on 13 July 1995. Probably some of the bones, which were not found, were carried away by that river. When the Serb forces led by Ratko Mladic took over a United Nations "safe area" of Srebrenica, they separated the men and boys from the women and girls. As soon as the Column was formed, Serb forces unleashed heavy gunfire and killed hundreds of people. The back of the Column disintegrated as the men ran into the woods for cover.
