Earlier in the tournament, she fell ill with laryngitis, creating fears that her final ever Wimbledon could be cut short.

John McEnroe gave Sue Barker a big hug and lauded her as "the Roger Federer of the broadcasting world" as she hosts her last Wimbledon final on Sunday.

Barker hosted her first Wimbledon for the BBC in 1993 and has fronted the coverage ever since. She called McEnroe a "naughty boy" for surprising her during the ceremony, to which he replied: “No, no, that was deserved. All I can say is from now on John McEnroe is going to be commentating on Court 17 after that, going off script.” On behalf of all the players, I just want to say that we're going to be lost without you. McEnroe pleaded with Barker once again to reconsider her retirement as he joked that she needed to stay for one more year, which he also did during the Centre Court centenary celebrations when McEnroe went off-script to tell Barker how much she means to the sport. "The gods are with Nick," the American pundit said.

Still, Jabeur became the first player from Tunisian to make a Grand Slam final, as well as the first Arab woman and African player in the Open era. The lefty Fleming is 1-2 with a 9.68 ERA in four appearances (three starts) against Boston. Prior to Sunday's game, Tampa Bay ace Shane McClanahan (9-3, 1.73) was named to his first AL All-Star team. Tampa Bay got to the fireballer for four runs and six hits in four innings. As the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays prepare to start a series against each other for the second straight week, both are looking to improve on tough weeks. Not qualifying Strome is one of a flurry of moves the Blackhawks are making to completely rebuild the franchise. Put that way, of course this isn’t a problem that the Celtics were going to fix with Smart or Brogdon. Any solution that starts with introducing another initiator to take the ball out of Tatum or Brown’s hands is going to be a non-starter. Kyrgios' conduct earlier in the tournament was a prevailing story heading into the final after he received a $10,000 fine for spitting in the direction of a fan and a $4,000 fine for cursing at an umpire. To become the alphas of a championship team, those skills are going to have to become even better and pass an even higher level of scrutiny. This is a great trade in part because he isn’t a true point guard, but instead able to contribute with and without the ball — and at 6-foot-5 and 230 pounds, he’ll fit right into the Celtics’ switch scheme that has become one of the best defenses in the league. The Celtics came up two wins short of winning their 18th NBA title in June and could have most, if not all of their core back for the 2022-2023 campaign, with a shallow list of free agents on the market. After spending the first two seasons of his NBA career as a part-time starter with the Milwaukee Bucks, Malcolm Brogdon has started all 210 regular-season games he's played in over the last four campaigns for the Bucks and Indiana Pacers. The recent Boston Celtics acquisition may be asked to play a different role on his new club in the fall. With reigning Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart already in Boston's backcourt, Brogdon has high expectations for the defensive prowess on his new squad.

'It's been a hell of a ride': John McEnroe on learning to lose and ... (The Guardian)

As a film about his life is released, the former bad boy of tennis reflects on how he went from villain to hero. By Tim Lewis.

I about-faced and was like, ‘OK I’m going to be with this one person and goddammit, I’m going to make this one work.’ I’m going to try harder than I did even the first time. “I just felt there would be extra attention on my kids, because of the way I acted,” he says. Or there’s the conundrum that a man who spent his whole career furious at the ineptitude and presumption of journalists has become the most influential member of their cohort. But at one point, someone told me, ‘They’re seeing you with tears and crying and that’s not good for your kids.’ So I had to get my shit together.” The divorce was confirmed in 1994, and in 1998 McEnroe was granted sole custody of the children because of O’Neal’s heroin addiction. “And I’m proud to say I made the right call at that time. “I remember thinking when I came to Wimbledon, ‘If I ever win this, I am never coming back to this goddamn tournament.’ But then I won it [in 1981] and all of a sudden I felt like I was gonna fly over the stadium. “I was falling apart in a way,” says McEnroe. “I don’t think I ever got to that falling-apart stage, but I was having a hard time functioning. I’d like to tell you yes, but I hope that there’s never a time where I have to answer that question!” Of course, there’s a lot of tennis in the film, which is directed by British filmmaker Barney Douglas. But it ends up being more a rumination on the pursuit of perfection, and what that drive ultimately wreaks on you, your two wives and six children. No one, that is, except McEnroe. “Michael Chang is a great champion in his own way,” he says more than two years on, of the former French Open winner, 13 years his junior. “But he’s lost something with his body: he used to be a great runner, he wasn’t running. It was a chance for a nostalgic crowd to squint and remember these players in their heyday, almost 40 years in the rear view.

John McEnroe melts down over Novak Djokovic US Open vaccine ban (The Comeback)

Instead of criticizing Novak Djokovic's decision, tennis analyst John McEnroe chose to blast politicians for implementing vaccine rules.

“I don’t think exemption is realistically possible…I think it’s just whether or not they remove this in time for me to get to the USA.” While Djokovic was able to play at Wimbledon, the US Open will be a tougher task considering it’s the United States’ COVID-19 entry rules, not tennis organizers, that are standing in his way. Djokovic now has 21 career Grand Slam titles, one behind Rafael Nadal for the most in men’s tennis history. “I don’t make those decisions, I hope that someone makes the right one and allows him to play,” McEnroe added, railing against politicians as if they were a chair umpire. There is an easy fix for Djokovic, who could get vaccinated and immediately be eligible to try for back-to-back majors. Currently, Djokovic will be barred from entering the United States without getting vaccinated, which means he will be unable to compete in the US Open next month, just as he was kept out of the Australian Open earlier this year.
