Rafael Nadal Out of Wimbledon with Injury; Nick Kyrgios Advances ... (Bleacher Report)

Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from Wimbledon because of an abdominal injury. He addressed his decision during an impromptu press conference Thursday:.

The #Nadal withdrawal at #Wimbledon is unfortunate but also annoying. When a player withdraws this late in a Grand Slam or before a major tour final, the beaten player should be able to take the slot. #Tennis needs a lucky loser scenario for things like this. It’s not only that I can’t serve at the right speed, it’s that I can’t do the normal movement to serve." Perhaps the concept can have utility deeper into a tournament. Rafael Nadal confirms he is pulling out of Wimbledon.

"I have a tear in the abdominal, the muscle.

Kyrgios, Nadal and a Contrast in Styles and Storylines in Wimbledon ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Australian burst onto the scene when he upset the 22-time Slam champ at Wimbledon in 2014. Now, he stares down yet another turning point against Nadal.

There is a lot of wear and tear from these matches—and when you don’t play tennis full time, as Kyrgios doesn’t, and you don’t train full time, as Kyrgios will happily tell you he doesn’t, who knows how much durability he has six matches into a tournament like Wimbledon. Kyrgios has the best serve of anyone left in the draw, he has youth on his side (at least against Nadal), but he is such an unpredictable player. There are many players who like Kyrgios (Andy Murray, for example) and players who like his on-court antics and he has friends in the locker room. On Thursday, he practiced, but for less than a half hour, while reports floated that he has a 7-mm tear in the area. The big x-factor here is the crowd, and they know it. Norrie, a lefty, makes players uncomfortable and makes it difficult for them to get into their own rhythm. “He lacks respect for the public, the rival and towards himself.” Nadal, who leads the overall series 6–3, will be ready and push through any nagging pain. The drama, along with Nadal grimacing after points, sparked all kinds of real-time speculation as to whether he would quit the match. It’s not just lefty versus righty, but just an overall approach to the profession. He is due in court in Canberra next month. Nadal, of course, is the absolute antithesis of that, who wrings everything from his game. Ever since, Kyrgios has remained a tantalizing underachiever who is monstrously talented; and monstrously unwilling to work and do what’s necessary to maximize his chances of succeeding.

Nadal Drops Out Of Wimbledon And Sends Kyrgios—Accused Of ... (Forbes)

Nick Kyrgios will compete in his first Grand Slam singles final this weekend, as he prepares to face assault charges next month in his native Australia.

Kyrgios has been a controversial figure at Wimbledon this year, amid legal trouble stemming from allegations he assaulted his former girlfriend Chiara Passari. Reports circulated this week that Kyrgios was ordered to appear in an Australian court in August to face assault charges. "The nature of the allegation is serious, and Mr. Kyrgios takes the allegation very seriously,” his attorney told The Canberra Times. Kyrgios has declined to comment on the charges when asked by reporters. Rafael Nadal will withdraw from Wimbledon ahead of his Friday semifinal match against Nick Kyrgios due to an injury, he announced Thursday, sending 27-year-old Kyrgios into his first Grand Slam singles final amid allegations he assaulted his former girlfriend last year.

Kyrgios, who is ranked 40th, has garnered more attention for his behavior on and off the court than for his skills with a racket in hand. Still, he summoned his best for last, grabbing a 5-0 lead in the closing tiebreaker -- the first-to-10, win-by-two format starting at 6-all in a fifth set is new to Wimbledon this year -- and then five of the last six points. "I would never put that burden on someone." That would probably be the most-watched match of all time. "In the abdominal, something is not going well." "It's difficult," Nadal said after the match of his abdominal issue. This time, the problem was a muscle in his stomach area, which had some athletic tape, as was also the case for Nadal's fourth-round match Monday, when he declined to discuss it. I feel like that would be a mouth-watering kind of encounter for everyone around the world. After Fritz took the third set, his big serve got broken three times in the next. A point later, Garin miss-hit a backhand wide and Kyrgios collapsed to his back, a Grand Slam semifinalist for the first time, amid the eeriest and tensest of environments. Garin broke Kyrgios’s serve at love in the opening game and won the first nine points of the match, prompting Kyrgios to shrug his shoulders and start the running dialogue with his box that lasted all afternoon. Every time Kyrgios needed a point, he found a big enough serve, or his hard, flat backhand, or a whippy, nasty forehand to get him over the hump. An early break of serve, a bump or two to give Garin a chance to get back even, some back and forth with his posse for support, and then ultimately, an ace to take a commanding lead. Part of what drives him, Kyrgios has said, is to prevail over all the naysayers and critics who view him as the antithesis of the sport’s mythic gentility. In the Kyrgios box, his father, girlfriend, agent, and physiotherapist rose after every point. In the few tense moments, the “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie. Oy, Oy, Oy,” cheer sounded, too. After Tsitsipas called him a “bully,” he said the Greek star was “soft” and no one on the tour liked him. He spat in the direction of a fan during his tense five-set, first-round win. It earned Kyrgios a semifinal showdown with the 22-time Grand Slam singles champion Rafael Nadal on Friday. When the matches ended, he took on journalists who questioned his behavior or his violations of Wimbledon’s all-white dress code, and even went after vanquished opponents. I understand everyone wants to kind of ask about it and all that, but I can’t give you too much on that right now.”

Nick Kyrgios, Australia's combustible star, kept his composure to beat Cristian Garin in straight sets in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Kyrgios is already muttering at the baseline. Kyrgios gets on the board with two aces and an unreturned serve. The first real baseline rally sees Garin go too long off the forehand. He's angry at missing a second-serve return at 0-30, though, and Garin digs out some big serves at the right time. And just like that, Kyrgios takes the first set! Garin is throwing in one too many baseline errors right now, although he's just hit another ripping forehand winner off a Kyrgios first serve. Kyrgios hits his first return winner of the match — a sign of the confidence with which he's playing. A quick-fire hold for Garin is just what he needed. Terrific court coverage from Garin sees him get to a Kyrgios drop volley and hit a winner. Kyrgios took umpire James Keothavong to task in the changeover. Garin is getting a few errors off the Kyrgios racquet now whenever he can keep a baseline exchange going. Garin returns well again and Kyrgios simply scoops a forehand wide.

Nick Kyrgios has been tennis' bad boy for almost a decade. Can he ... (USA TODAY)

If Nick Kyrgios is ever going to do something in tennis that transcends the money, controversy and unrealized expectations, it's got to be now.

But we’ve always wondered what might happen if he could ever keep it together long enough to reach this stage of a Grand Slam. Now that he’s in the semifinals, we’re about to find out. “He could win Grand Slams and fight for the top positions of the ranking, but there is a reason why he is where he is. Kyrgios said Wednesday he would like to give his side of the story but was advised by attorneys not to address the matter publicly. Since the Tsitsipas match, Kyrgios has behaved as professionally on court as he ever has, largely eschewing the theatrics and focusing on the business at hand. Now, in the midst of the best period of his career, there is more off-court controversy. It’s both fitting and inevitable that Nadal, of all people, is standing in the way of his destiny. If Kyrgios is ever going to do something in tennis that transcends the money, the controversy and all the unrealized expectations in his wake, it’s got to be right here and right now. He lacks respect for the public, the rival and towards himself.” Kyrgios responded on Instagram with a video of their icy handshake and the caption: “Don’t doubt yourself, there are plenty of people who will do that for you. No more stumbling out of a bar in Wimbledon village late at night, no playing video games round the clock, no sideshow distractions to prove some point about how monotonous and boring this staid old sport can be. Friday’s semifinal against Nadal may not quite live up to “the most watched match of all time,” as Kyrgios suggested in his news conference. Every time the Australian showed a glimpse of seriousness, of purpose, of desire to be great, it faded just as quickly. Year by year, the further he got from the day he beat Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon as a teenager, the more likely it seemed to everyone — including Kyrgios — that he’d never again reach such a peak.

The Rafael Nadal-Nick Kyrgios semifinal is too painful to ... (GolfDigest.com)

Earlier this year, the North Carolina Tar Heels won in Mike Krzyzewski's final game at Cameron Indoor Stadium, and then somehow made things even worse by ...

This is one of those situations where the pain of a loss is far greater than the triumph of a win, especially because a win just means having to face Djokovic in the final. And the vexing thing about Kyrgios is that while he's thus far blown most of his talent, he still has this uncanny ability to rise to the occasion when he's playing the best players in the world. In terms of character, he's the best tennis—and maybe all of sports—has to offer, and he's about to face one of the worst. Kyrgios can't put in the kind of work to focus for the long grind, but you get him in a match with an all-time great, and it sparks his interest and brings out the best in him. In other words, despite the inconsistency wrought by an all-time nightmare attitude, he's not a choker. He beat Rafa at Wimbledon in 2014, he's somehow 2-0 against Novak Djokovic, and while Federer has mostly owned him, the two have played some absolute classics. But Rafa? Rafa with a possible shot at the calendar slam, in a Wimbledon semifinal? His demeanor is surly, most of his talent has been wasted, and perhaps worst of all, he's facing a domestic violence charge back in Australia. (Details are scant on this and I don't want to convict someone in the court of public opinion without knowing the details, but it is a real thing that's happening.) I don't particularly like Tsitsipas, so there was a kind of schadenfreude in watching Kyrgios burrow into his head and beat him. Five of you.” were his choice remarks on Wednesday to a group that included two family members and his girlfriend), while shaking his head as if the world has never given him anything but total injustice. Earlier in Wimbledon, he enraged Stefanos Tsitsipas to the point that the Greek player tried to hit him on multiple occasions and then called him a bully in a post-match presser.
