That being said, Hemsworth isn’t the only Norse god who can summon a Mjölnir. In this flick, Natalie Portman, returning to the series as astrophysicist Jane Foster, has gained her own superpowers to become the Mighty Thor. Together, this hammer-wielding duo embark on a journey to defeat Gorr the God Butcher (a terrifying Christian Bale), a galactic villain whose name sheds light on his mission to arrange the extinction of all things divine. Disney’s “ Thor: Love and Thunder,” the fourth standalone story about Chris Hemsworth’s hulking God of Thunder and the second (of three) Marvel movies to play in theaters in 2022, is gearing up to turbocharge the domestic box office. The film debuts on Friday in 4,300 North American theaters.

Captain Marvel goes from a 79% critic score to a much-lower-than-anything 45%, which was absolutely due to review bombing after star Brie Larson upset some “fans” with various comments, and this was actually the moment that Rotten Tomatoes started requiring “verification” for audience scores. Black Panther, the #1 critic scored movie with a 96% has a 79% audience score. As reviews came rolling in yesterday for Thor: Love and Thunder, it became clear that something was somewhat amiss with the scores.

Love and Thunder doesn't live up to the incredible stories that inspired it. Love and Thunder merely alludes to this, and largely reduces Gorr's villainy to kidnapping Asgardian children as part of a grander plot. It feels like this movie couldn't wait to get away from the pesky continuity and back to the Asgardian storyline of Thor's solo movies. Though the movie fails to explore her ennui enough, Thompson infuses the character with sufficient mischief that she's a joy to watch. But the God of Thunder totally outclasses his new allies, making him seem like an overpowered video game character as he crushes their enemies and leaves the Guardians looking a bit useless. Thor: Love and Thunder seemed guaranteed to be a slam dunk.

'Thor: Love and Thunder' smites toxic positivity with its heavy metal ... (Austin American-Statesman)

The latest caper from Chris Hemsworth, Taika Waititi and Marvel Studios wrestles with an eternal theological question. Also, it has space goats.

There’s a C.S. Lewis book, “The Problem of Pain,” I kept thinking about when watching the characters of “Thor: Love and Thunder” ache. The filmmaker does not answer the problem of pain in a Marvel movie. Waititi also shapes much of the plot around children, which opens up thematic possibilities that end with a little too much sugar for my tastes. The heroes suffer, too: Jane with a lonely burden, Thor with serial losses, even Valkyrie with a grief that has not disappeared, only taken a new shape. With “Love and Thunder,” Jane finally feels free to be fun — and, with better chemistry with Hemsworth than ever, oh so heartbreakingly tragic. And while nothing could dim his spark, it’s a blessing that Portman returned after missing the third installment of the series. With “Thor: Love and Thunder,” the audience can finally sit back and appreciate the fantastic arc he’s taken this character on since 2011. Now, he’s traveling the stars (and ripping through Guns N' Roses on the jukebox) with the Guardians of the Galaxy. The walking definition of “it’s not fair,” even Hemsworth’s considerable physical divinity can’t distract from his god-level comic timing. An alien being called Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) is hunting down the gods — all of ‘em! — after his faith was rewarded with unspeakable tragedy. We’ve seen Thor reckon with loss, but never with as much humanity as this outing. It’s about gods, obviously, but specifically their works — and more often, failures.

The Thor: Love and Thunder post-credits scene feature surprise cameos, and one of them just leaked online - what you need to know.

The other, of course, is Idris Elba’s Heimdall, welcoming Jane to Valhalla. Thor: Love and Thunder will have two post-credits scenes, the recent leaks said. What’s important here is that Goldstein is playing Hercules in Thor: Love and Thunder, just as rumors suggested. After all these leaks dropped online in the days preceding the premiere, a blog confirmed they were genuine and provided ample details about them. And one of those reports even teased the surprise in these scenes. That’s how Valkyrie ends up with Zeus’s Lightning Bolt in the trailer. Whether or not you can still find the Love and Thunder post-credits cameo on social media, you should know that reviews are already pouring in. But the videos are deleted quite fast. That’s because we can finally see the actor playing Hercules, and it’s quite an exciting development. But, thankfully, he did not die by the end of it, as we had suspected. If you want to be surprised, you should avoid all Love and Thunder reports this week. As for the post-credits scenes, we only got written descriptions, not actual video clips.

Thor: Love and Thunder is only in theaters on July 8, 2022. He also is part of the cast along with Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Russell Crowe. After three solo runs, the anticipation of the fourth entry is now at an all-time high, and it’s not surprising given what is set to go down in Thor: Love and Thunder.

Jane (Natalie Portman) now has control over the giant hammer and joins forces with the Mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in “Thor: Love and Thunder.” Marvel Studios ...

The “Love” element of the equation is surprisingly underwhelming, and the “Thunder” isn’t as powerful as it should be. Tessa Thompson adds some spark to the proceedings as King Valkyrie, a brave and smart and heroic character who deserves a movie of her own. Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher has a fantastic, Nosferatu-like visage and he’s a potentially memorable villain, but he’s offscreen for large chunks of the story. Given how things ended between Thor and Jane, it’s a bit awkward for them to be on this mission together, and Korg doesn’t help matters when he keeps getting Jane’s name wrong, calling her “Jane Fonda” and “Jodie Foster,” because her name is Jane Foster, get it? As was the case with the Disney+ series “Hawkeye” and “Ms. Marvel,” the mere mortals on Earth have come to celebrate their superheroes with tourist attractions. Whereas the wildly talented director Taiki Waititi found the perfect formula for bruising action, legitimately effective drama, wicked-smart comedy and even a bit of social commentary in “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017), this attempt to recapture that magic falls flat.

The people could be using this as a way to move forward from that event, but at the least, the ice cream at this shop is something visitors are sure to seek out as they enjoy their vacation. The Asgardians were one of the first groups to meet Thanos' wrath as he embarked on his Infinity Stone quest in Avengers: Infinity War, so it's a bit bizarre that the residents of the town are now poking fun at the Mad Titan and subsequently those that perished during the five year gap. Thanos' impact on Love and Thunder may only be minimal after the Mad Titan turned to dust in Avengers: Endgame, but he'll only be part of the tributes to the past that this movie will bring.

'Thor: Love and Thunder' review: A surprisingly bittersweet romp (FOX 10 News Phoenix)

Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman reteam in “Thor: Love and Thunder,” a messy but emotionally ambitious film. FOX Digital film critic Caroline Siede ...

In fact, at its best, "Love and Thunder" is one of the most quietly philosophical entries in the MCU, as its characters grapple with the disappointment of meeting their godly heroes or question how to claim autonomy within the limitations of a mortal life. "Thor Love and Thunder" will beam into theaters nationwide on July 8. Jupiter Ascending (2015): Like a lot of the Wachowskis’ post- "Matrix"output, "Jupiter Ascending" is the sort of gonzo swing that definitely isn’t for everyone. About the writer: Caroline Siede is a film and TV critic in Chicago, where the cold never bothers her anyway. So, yes, there are some massive stakes at play (not to mention some delightfully wackadoo ideas about how gods spend their free time). But the most surprising thing about "Love and Thunder" is how much it operates as a small scale, introspective story about mid-life ennui. The largely episodic plot also struggles to generate the right sense of tension and pacing for a superhero adventure. The joke is that the godly powers turn the astrophysicist into a bit of an aggro lunkhead, but Portman mostly just winds up seeming lost amidst the beefy muscles and glossy airbrushing. Much in the same way "Spider-Man: No Way Home" had to clumsily deal with Peter Parker’s identity reveal before getting into the multiverse-hopping story it actually wanted to tell, "Love and Thunder" opens with an awkward throat clear as it tries and fails to find something interesting to do with the fact that "Endgame" sent Thor off with the Guardians of the Galaxy ( Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, et al.). And though it’s a tonal experiment that doesn’t entirely hang together, the unexpected dose of emotional maturity is a welcome way to bridge the gap between the old era of Thor and the new one. ( Jaimie Alexander’s Lady Sif is also on hand for a brief cameo, but sadly, and rather inexplicably, doesn’t get to be part of the main crew.) And when his vengeful reign of terror touches New Asgard, Thor and his friends must try to recruit some new allies and save the universe from Gorr’s godly assassinations. Rather than run from Thor’s convoluted past, "Love and Thunder" embraces it — literally bringing the character’s onscreen history back into the fold via Natalie Portman’s Jane Foster, the love interest who all but disappeared since 2013.

So, take care of yourselves and of each other, and make sure the fun of seeing movies in theaters again doesn’t have to include a life-or-death risk. Some will point to those films having shorter theatrical windows and debuting on Disney+ streaming as a contributing factor to their box office struggles. Likewise, Top Gun: Maverick appears to be on course for a $1.2+ billion finish, riding high on the same tremendous outpouring of audience good will. No audience scores yet, of course, but word of mouth is going to be a lot more important than reviews. Despite the continued Covid pandemic and surging variants with higher transmissibility, audiences are enthusiastically filling theaters and should easily drive the final worldwide opening cume north of $300 million.

Taika Waititi takes a hammer to Thor in 'Love & Thunder' (ABC News)

To a large degree, modern blockbuster moviemaking has depended on the appeasement of fans to keep franchise juggernauts smoothly humming.

The kid army that helps save the day in “Love and Thunder” is just the latest uprising in Waititi's ongoing war against adulthood. The love of “Love and Thunder," which Waititi co-wrote, most directly applies to relationship between Thor and Jane, but it also relates to other aspects of the “Thor” sequel, including Christian Bale's grieving villain and the kidnapped children who play increasingly central roles in the film. The primacy of kids in “Thor: Love and Thunder” is also very much in line with Waititi's other films. “It’s more just the idea of Burbank as a place,” Waititi clarifies. That includes collaborators like Jemaine Clement (with whom Waititi made “What We Do in the Shadows”), Rhys Darby (currently paired together in the HBO Max series “Our Flag Means Death”) and many others. “The way Taika directs, the way that he does things, it’s about spontaneity,” say Harjo, who next month will debut the series’ second season. “Ragnarok” grossed $850 million worldwide, and expectations are similar for “Love and Thunder.” His ability to connect with mass audiences — despite his best efforts to subvert expectations — is surpassed by few current filmmakers. “My job is to go in and have as many ideas as I can and not think about the consequences too much, and let them keep me in the Marvel lane," Waititi adds. It was a massive leap in scale for Waititi, who after spending years painting in his late 20s turned to making comic independent films ("Boy," “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”) with deadpan absurdity and freewheeling tonal shifts. His “Jojo Rabbit,” a child’s view of Nazi Germany in which Waititi played an imaginary Hitler, received six Oscar nominations in 2020. “I wanted to show him in a light that most Thor fans wouldn’t really want if you were to tell them,” Waititi says. In “Love and Thunder” there are things that usually never enter the MCU, like kids and cancer.

How Costume Designer Mayes C. Rubeo Created the Colorful ... (WWD)

Costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo talks about the costumes in 'Thor: Love and Thunder' for Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman. Read more here.

It was an interesting textile — it was handwoven and that gave it that kind of antiquity and ancient feeling to this God Butcher who comes from a very archaic world.” We created a wonderful, lightweight, dynamic and very ’80s [headpiece], and the [costumes’] colors, we wanted to make them similar to old Thor, but because Thor has all these new colors, we wanted to do something a little different for her.” For the character, Rubeo wanted to reflect his ancient background, so she referenced old marble statues and created an intricately draped costume for Bale. “It really is an explosion, and I don’t think you can go any louder than with Thor’s costumes.” She produced other versions of Thor’s uniform by incorporating more vibrant colors, like reds, blues and metallic golds to match the exaggerated aesthetic of the film. “He is a constant fountain of wanting to do a lot of new things with new technology.

What You Need To Remember Before Watching Thor: Love And ... (/FILM)

Sure, if Marvel Studios had its way, anyone with even a fleeting interest in the MCU would engage with every piece of media it's churned out since 2008. But ...

Taika Waititi's "Thor: Ragnarok" is a splendid re-invention of the "Thor" movies, carefully straddling the line between being earnest and being glib while serving up a buffet of colorful cosmic visuals and loveably off-beat new heroes like Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie. It's also the first MCU film to fully tap into Chris Hemsworth's comedic prowess, completing the God of Thunder's evolution from haughty jerk to wise-cracking, bumbling himbo. "Ragnarok" pits Thor and Loki against their sister Hela, the Goddess of Death, whose existence is only revealed to them by Odin right before he passes aways. Despite his weakened state, he joins the other surviving Avengers on a "time heist" to undo what Thanos did. By the end, however, Thor declines to succeed Odin as king of Asgard after saving the day and returns to Earth to reunite with Jane, once again hoping to make things work. This conclusion would have also spared us an ungainly line about Thor and Jane's off-screen breakup in the third "Thor" movie. It also nicely sets up Thor's family drama while establishing that being in a functional relationship with the God of Thunder is much easier said than done, as Jane comes to learn. Most of "Thor" centers on its namesake being stripped of his powers and banished to Earth by Odin for his insolence. It's not a good film, don't get me wrong, but it is a pivotal one to Thor's story in the MCU. The film marks Chris Hemsworth's eighth time playing Thor on the big screen, which is a whole lot of backstory to keep straight for any single movie, much less one that acts as a sequel to not just the last "Thor" adventure but the greater Infinity Saga (e.g. the first 23 MCU films). Never you fear, though! Indeed, he barely pauses to reconsider before defying his father Odin and declaring war against the Frost Giants of Jotunheim after a handful break into Asgard. All the while, Thor's brother Loki subtly plays the devil on his shoulder. With " Thor: Love and Thunder" arriving in theaters this week, it feels like a good time to help bring everyone up to speed on what's happened to the eponymous God of Thunder in the MCU so far. When we meet him in Branagh's film, Thor is a skilled but arrogant warrior who wouldn't hesitate to chuck his magic hammer Mjolnir at someone's face if he felt it was justified.

The film is looking at a $300 million worldwide opening — an estimated $140-$160 million of that in the United States and Canada. In a new behind-the-scenes video from Entertainment Tonight, director Taika Waititi and star Chris Hemsworth take viewers on a tour of the Love and Thunder set, showing off a bit of New Asgard, including that interesting ice cream shop. The shop features a large Infinity Gauntlet protruding from the building holding an ice cream cone, the ice cream itself decked out with candies that are an homage to the six Infinity Stones. It's kind of a clever idea, though given the destruction that Thanos caused to the universe writ large but specifically the horrors that the Asgardians endured due to Thanos' quest to gain the Infinity Stones, having an ice cream shop devoted to him seems like a really strange choice.

Thor: Love and Thunder Is Mighty Fine (Slate Magazine)

Is Taika Waititi overstretched, overexposed, or making work that's as Korg-solid as ever?

Thor: Love and Thunder marks the first time an MCU hero has ever gotten a fourth freestanding film to himself—an odd distinction for Thor, perhaps the least introspective of the whole Avengers class. Taking her leave of one of Zeus’ comely attendants in Omnipotence City, Val gallantly kisses the young woman’s hand, and it may be the most erotic moment yet to be seen in a Marvel movie. A well-done early montage hints at what a Type A, on-the-job king Val was during her brief tenure in charge of New Asgard: We see her cutting ribbons, resolving disputes, and coolly staving off disasters. As a critic who herself has had limited exposure to many of the properties this polymathic creator works on, based solely on the viewing of this movie, I say no. He has worked both in front of and behind the camera on overlapping film and TV projects ( What We Do in the Shadows, The Mandalorian, Our Flag Means Death, Reservation Dogs), taking breaks to look handsome in vibrantly hued ’fits on red carpets. Returning to Thor world five years later, not as a rising writer-director making his first big-budget film, but as an established Disney-Marvel company man, is a tall order for a onetime wunderkind.

What happens when the son of Odin stops being worthy of the enchanted hammer Mjolnir? While the version of the team that appears in the most recent comic book incarnation of the franchise isn’t exactly the same one that director James Gunn has made into a household name, this take on the Guardians is arguably the best seen in years. The price of being a Thor is a heavy one. Waititi isn’t the only one returning for Love and Thunder. It also features Natalie Portman reprising her role as Jane Foster, who—in a move inspired by Jason Aaron’s fan favorite comic book storyline—becomes the new Thor. And that’s not the only Aaron influence in the movie. Not only does it introduce the threat of the seemingly unstoppable Gorr, it also shows Thor growing into the person he never thought he could be. Although “Love and Thunder” emulates its predecessor in its endless stream of surprises and goofy humor, it fails to top the masterpiece that was 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok.” The characters don’t blend together quite as well in this fourth “Thor” adventure. Parts of the film also get too scary for a conventional PG-13 Marvel movie. Gorr isn’t one for cracking jokes, a stark contrast to Cate Blanchett’s Hela, who in “Ragnarok” spared viewers a few laughs as she trampled over the bodies of her victims. Despite its flaws and simple plot, it’s hard to totally mess up a Marvel movie. “Love and Thunder” also misses Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, with whom Hemsworth always shared a special chemistry.

Shape-shifting Christian Bale takes his body to extremes once again ... (New York Post)

The second “Thor” movie from director Taika Waititi brings in the “Batman” star as the installment's villain, a disillusioned former believer out to bring down ...

“We looked at the comic book character, who’s quite muscular, and I said, ‘Well that just can’t happen, so we have to look at his supernatural powers instead,'” he said to ET. “And also, how can you compete with Chris [Hemsworth] in terms of muscles, you know? But when it came to recreating the cartoonishly bulked-up outline of the comics character, Bale’s dedication to his roles actually tanked the plan. And when Bale tells you he was skinny, believe: He’s dropped unhealthy amounts of weight for several roles. I was like, ‘I can’t eat, I’ve got long nails.’ I was trying to type. “I hadn’t heard that. Bale, 48, is the industry’s standard for body modification.

With the addition of new gods and a wider cosmic pantheon than we’ve seen before, it looks as though Thor: Love and Thunder will broaden the MCU like never before. Taika Waititi on 'Thor: Love and Thunder,' Playing Marginalized ... (IndieWire)

From Marvel movies to "Our Flag Means Death," Waititi is challenging Hollywood to improve its representation. How does he do it?

The pandemic put it on hold for a year, then I went back and kept working on it at the same time that we were finishing “Thor.” I think that the plan — I’ll probably say it and then it’ll be changed — but the plan right now is early next year. I want to work as much as possible in this little moment that I have. If something is about to happen and it doesn’t happen, that can be the best thing for me because I can take a break or work on some of the other things that I might be neglecting. Now and then it comes to mind, but I feel like I’ve strived so much in the past as a filmmaker to have multiple projects going on. It’s the idea that these things just are, in a Marvel film, in a mainstream film that young, queer people will see. But now you’re going to do a “Star Wars” movie, and a lot of directors have have had problems with recent projects there due to creative differences with the studio. It will still have the same scale to it, which you wouldn’t be able to have with a budget cut in Los Angeles. I’m very different in that anyone I’ve broken up with or have had a relationship with in the past — after eight years, I’ve never, ever felt like I’ve wanted to be in a relationship with them again. On that note, let’s talk about “Our Flag Means Death.” In addition to your starring role as Blackbeard, you’re an executive producer on the show, but even as it had a huge following HBO didn’t renew it right away. Is it going to feel like a Kaufman sketch that will make people start banging their TVs? It helped to have little bits of color here and there on the main characters. We had already talked with Kevin Feige about a few ideas for this film, but you can never be sure, because once you get comfortable, that whole section of the film you love so much gets cut out and you have to go in a different direction. I don’t do any research into all of the threads and storylines of Marvel because there’s too many and I don’t know half the characters.

What to watch this weekend: Marvel's 'Thor: Love and Thunder ... (USA TODAY)

New films streaming or in theaters this weekend: Chris Hemsworth's thunder god returns in 'Thor: Love and Thunder,' Netflix unleashes 'The Sea Beast.'

There's an interesting narrative thread about family legacy and siblings that ends up taking a backseat to plot swerves in this decent but flawed thriller. "Moana" fans will get a kick out of this comedic animated adventure with colorful creatures and a big heart. Thor's path in the Marvel movies has led him to a bit of an identity crisis, and on top of that he runs into his ex Jane (Portman), now a powerful goddess herself wielding Thor's old magic hammer.

It looks so stunning on film, but every time I see it, I’m like, ‘That’s a Best Buy parking lot.'” Natalie Portman told Entertainment Weekly that “ Thor: Love and Thunder” has one of the most visually stunning scenes she’s ever seen on film, and it just so happens to have been shot in a random Best Buy parking lot. “It’s so wild to be on this size of movie, and we were literally in a parking lot with a blue screen, doing this really dramatic thing.

'Thor: Love and Thunder' Could Be Banned In Thousands of Theaters (Inside the Magic)

As the world prepares for the next film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 'Thor: Love and Thunder' may become banned in multiple theaters.

At the London premiere of Thor: Love and Thunder, one audience member asked the director and leading ladies how gay the new Thor movie was. Now, while questions surrounding Thor: Love and Thunder‘s focus on LGBTQ+ characters like King Valkyrie are still being asked, it seems that Thor 4 may go the way as the aforementioned movies as Waititi, Thompson, and Portman revealed that the MCU film is, in fact, “super gay.” Once upon a time, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige promised MCU fans that Valkyrie’s sexual orientation, would be explored in future sequels.

Thor: Love and Thunder post-credits scenes explained (Bam! Smack! Pow!)

As with almost all other Marvel Studios offerings, Thor: Love and Thunder features two post-credits scenes. We break them down here.

It may not feel like it, given how obscure he is, but Hercules (full name Hercules Panhellenios) is a prominent character in the House of Ideas’ sprawling tapestry, and he opens the possibility of an exciting new chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. During the third act, Jane and Thor struggle to stop Gorr from opening a gate to the being known as Eternity to wish for all gods to die. Moving on to Jane, Love and Thunder reveals she has cancer. But Thor is the God of Thunder, and not even Zeus will stop him from achieving his goals. Nearly five years after Thor: Ragnarok hit theaters, Thor: Love and Thunder has arrived to continue the God of Thunder’s story. Love and Thunder features two exciting after-credits sequences that hint at Thor’s next adventure and give closure to a beloved character.

The new Thor movie is the latest installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, coming very soon to a streaming service near you.

Thor: Love and Thunder is the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe ( MCU) film to come to theaters. It seems likely that Disney will now stick to around a 45-day theatrical window for its MCU releases. Spider-Man: No Way Home, however, is not on Disney+ due to it being a Sony release.

'Thor: Love and Thunder' Review: A Mighty Uneven Sequel (ScreenCrush)

(He's an immortal space viking, so technically he was always the most tenured superhero in the MCU.) But after three solo movies and four Avengers films, what ...

Still, his the material that remains is the strongest in the entire picture, even if it has to coexist with a pair of screeching space goats and Thor dealing with some relationship issues with his axe, Stormbreaker. The comedic elements last time were funnier, and made a lot more sense in that story about Thor trapped on a bizarre planet full of oddballs like Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster. Love and Thunder’s colorful visuals feel less in sync with Thor riffing like an improv comic, and neither one mesh with the screenplay’s strained attempts to say something profound about the nature of life and death. In Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi managed to fuse over-the-top heroic imagery with a contemporary sense of humor and a kitschy aesthetic. The good news: Thor: Love and Thunder finds a genuinely new angle on Thor. The bad news: It finds it in the movie’s very last scene. It should, but it doesn’t. There are some very heavy sequences in Love and Thunder and they fit uncomfortably with the movie’s non-stop goofball comedy. As he did in Ragnarok, Waititi gives Thor a ragtag group of allies including Valkyrie ( Tessa Thompson) and Korg (Waititi himself). (And yes, Thor ditches one group of friends so he can be alone, only to bring together a second group of friends about six minutes later.) Most importantly, Thor’s ex-girlfriend Jane Foster ( Natalie Portman) reenters his life, this time as a superhero in her own right.

The Marvel Machine Breaks Down in Thor: Love and Thunder (Vanity Fair)

Director Taika Waititi's second outing with the godly hero is a major fall from grace.

Maybe that’s Waititi’s secret intention, to take the piss out of the endeavor to such a degree that we see how dumb all this stuff really is. A visit to a sort of Pleasure Island for galactic gods does nothing for the story, though it gives Waititi ever more room to garrulously riff. There is no sense of occasion or larger narrative meaning to be found in Love and Thunder. It’s simply a vignette-y ramble, a hyper-colored string of gags that never land. Never ones to let a good thing lie, Marvel has tapped Waititi for another Thor adventure, Love and Thunder (in theaters July 8), hoping he can sustain this property with ever more of his sideways New Zealand drollness. Though it debuted 11 long years ago and my memory of it is faint, I do dimly recall that Marvel Studios’s original Thor film took itself a little seriously. Well, as seriously as one can take a movie about Norse gods living in space and battling elves and wicked foundling brothers and whatnot.

It was followed by Italy at $1.4M (3rd highest opening day of the pandemic/2nd biggest of 2022) and Germany at $1.2M (4th highest pandemic opening day). Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi returns to direct the fourquel that took in $3M in Australia on Wednesday, the 2nd highest opening day during the pandemic and highest opening day of 2022 to date (both excluding previews). Box Office: Will Middling (For Marvel) Reviews Hurt 'Thor: Love And ... (Forbes)

Will audiences on the fence about the newest 'Thor' sequel read the reviews and decide to wait just 45 days and watch it on DIsney+?

That would be fine in a pre-Disney+ world (or even a pre-Bob Chapek world). That still might be the case since audiences who may not be addicted to the MCU still really liked Thor: Ragnarok and may still show up for more of the same. So far, the answer is “no.” Disney is reporting a $15.7 million opening day in 17 overseas markets, including Germany, Italy, Australia and South Korea. In “like for like” markets, it has earned 39% more than Thor: Ragnarök (which eventually earned $854 million, including $115 million in China) and 24% less than Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (which didn’t play in China and still topped $950 million global). And to be clear, a Thor: Love and Thunder that grosses $715 million global (75% of Doctor Strange 2 without China and Russia) will be a rock-solid hit. There’s an enormous difference between “this film will be available to buy for $20 in 75-90 days and available to rent for $5 in 90-100 days” versus “this film will be available to buy for $20 or watch for free on your streaming platform in 45 days.” This new normal, combined with the comparatively middling reviews, may not affect the (guestimated over/under $160 million) opening weekend. It earned more than Batman Returns ($184 million domestic and $336 million global from a $53 million debut versus $162 million/$266 million from a $47 million debut) and was considered a franchise savior. All due respect, even a “bad” MCU movie like The Dark World is miles above the 1990 Captain America). Moreover, the current adults in the room were the kids who grew up during the slow normalization of mega-budget tentpoles like Independence Day, Jurassic Park and Spider-Man. It’s also why, to be fair, Keanu Reeves finally gets the respect he deserves and horror movies tend to be better reviewed than when I was a kid. Yes, the critical consensus was different in 2008 and even 2013 (when movies on the scale of Thor: The Dark World were still somewhat unique) than in 2022, both in terms of Marvel’s overwhelming popularity among geek-centric critics and their monoculture-like domination of pop culture.
