Tour de France 2022: Tadej Pogacar takes time from Jumbo-Visma ... (The Independent)

Australian Simon Clarke won the stage in a sprint finish at the end of a wild day on the treacherous cobblestones of northern France which saw Primoz Roglic ...

“After the winter I had, when I had no team, I think you’ve seen all year I’ve come in every race swinging and I just tried to make the most of every opportunity. Van Aert wil continue in yellow on Thursday for what is the longest stage of this year’s Tour, a hilly route which might suit the Belgian better than anyone, especially given that the usually masterful puncheur Mathieu van der Poel has struggled so much this week. Up ahead, the breakawayers held off the Stuyven-Pogacar charge and the group eventually distilled down to a fight between Clarke and Dutch rider Taco van der Hoorn in a sprint finish. The Slovenian prodigy, going for his third Tour de France in a row, latched on to Jumbo-Visma for a while and then Ineos before cutting loose with the help of Trek-Segafredo’s Jasper Stuyven once he heard of Jumbo’s struggles. The peloton and team cars whipped up a thick orange soot which filled the air along the cobbled stretches, limiting visibility and forcing riders to trust their own racing instincts and a little blind faith. Not everyone believes cobblestones have a place in the Tour de France given their penchant for spreading misery in such unpredictable and uneven ways, but they always deliver drama of some kind and this compelling race was no exception.

"As you've seen this season I've come out in every race swinging, trying to make the most of every opportunity... For Clarke, 35, his first individual Tour stage victory comes after a winter in which he thought his career might be over after the break up of the Qhubeka-Assos team. Simon Clarke won stage five of the Tour de France in a photo finish in Arenberg as defending champion Tadej Pogacar took a big step towards a third straight title on a bad day for the Jumbo-Visma team of race leader Wout van Aert and Primoz Roglic.

Two-time champion gains time over rivals after finishing 51s behind stage winner Clarke.

“We gave everything. Wout van Aert retained the overall lead at the end of a bad day for his Jumbo Visma team, with Primoz Roglic, runner-up in 2020 and one of the pre-race favourites, losing more than two minutes to fellow Slovenian Pogacar after a crash that left him with a dislocated shoulder. “It was a really good day for me, I didn’t have any bad luck and I felt good on the cobbles,” said Pogacar, who as a professional has never taken part in the Paris-Roubaix cobbled classic.

Simon Clarke wins crash-marred Stage 5 of Tour de France (ESPN)

Simon Clarke won a crash-marred fifth stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday while Wout van Aert clung onto the leader's yellow jersey.

So for me from then on it was a fight the whole day." It was a first individual win on the Tour for Clarke, who was in tears after crossing the line. It was a lot of power on the pedals through the day, the cobbles were dusty and dangerous," Pogačar said. He was able to get back on and catch up with the peloton -- although he almost went down again as he clipped the wing mirror of his own team car. "In my opinion the roads were way too dangerous, everyone expected some stress because of the cobbles but then there was also a lot of narrowings and things on the road," Van Aert said. "I still can't believe I got it on the line there.

Or a slice of pizza in the musette?!? Specialized’s Roubaix range is, as the name suggests, designed for the harsher terrain of northern France and all-day comfort. Sagan is happy to forego a gram and use a leash to prevent him losing his head unit. Spare wheels were shipped from service courses and every spare staffer lined the road to support riders with extra equipment. Check the detail with the water bottle, energy bar, and energy gel strategy. Team staffers were equally prepared for a day of crazy.

“In the end, it was OK because Wout van Aert dropped even his own teammates. He was quick to highlight the contrast in Van Aert’s and Jumbo-Visma’s tactics. The two-time Tour de France winner is usually at the sharp end of aggressive racing and the rider making the attacks.

Bradley Wiggins reckoned that the cobbled Stage 5 of the Tour de France was "the most animated" in the 20 years the terrain has been a part of the race.

GC winners and losers after cobbled carnage of stage 5 (CyclingTips)

The long-awaited stage 5, flush with cobbled sectors unfamiliar to much of the Tour de France peloton, brought several riders down to earth with a ...

A puncture held him up and with few teammates around and/or without the legs to help, O’Connor had to take matters into his own hands. He lost time with a frenzy of bike changes, trying out two teammates’ bikes before finally getting one of his own from the team car. Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) was all of us as he gave the young Slovenian a pat on the shoulder after leading the peloton through the first of 11 sectors. And while they’re left choking on his dust, the young champion’s morale is sky-high. Unlike Jumbo-Visma who experienced something of this fate today, that version of the 23-year-old phenom won’t have had a teammate’s bike at his disposal, nor their strength and power to pace him back into contention. Some of the heaviest fallers were, inevitably, a number of general classification favourites.
