Manchester United discussed selling Cristiano Ronaldo in January ... (The Athletic)

It has been a turbulent few days at United, with doubts over Ronaldo's future and whether he will report for pre-season training as expected.

Sources close to United players told The Athletic that Ronaldo’s exit would “liberate” some of his team-mates and allow them to express themselves again — almost as if a weight would be lifted from their shoulders. Although tax breaks in Italy alleviate some of the burden of taking on Ronaldo’s huge wages, Serie A is on its knees after the pandemic. It is an argument that is not without merit, given how challenging it is for any coach to accommodate Ronaldo — the 2022 model — in a tactical system that plays to the strengths of the collective. While that guarantees goals — he was United’s top scorer last season with 24 in all competitions — there are legitimate questions to be asked about the benefits of starting a new era with an individualistic forward who turns 38 in February. In the eyes of some, the Ronaldo situation is not black and white. Rangnick felt that as Ronaldo’s time at United was uncertain beyond the end of the season, it made sense to act sooner rather than later to reconfigure the side’s attack. From United’s point of view this time around, the expectation is still that Ronaldo will see out the final 12 months of his contract. The prospect of Ronaldo leaving United was, after all, bubbling away under the surface when the team’s form flatlined under both Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick. Ronaldo was afforded similar leeway when he flew to Portugal in March, once it became clear he would miss the Manchester derby. That is the best case scenario. Much, however, will depend on the talks that are due to take place with Ten Hag upon Ronaldo’s return to training. That conversation will go a long way to deciding whether Ronaldo stays or not.

Two days after Cristiano Ronaldo asked out of Manchester United if the right bid arrived, the Portuguese striker missed the first day of training for what has been described as "personal reasons." Let's stay with Tottenham as Ajax have agreed on a fee for the transfer of Steven Bergwijn, Dutch journalist Mike Verweij reports. The closest move as things stand is the addition of Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet on loan, according to Spanish publication Sport. Conte agreed to stay at the club only after that Levy and Paratici promised him new signings before the start of the season. Pessina will also become the captain of the club as he was born in Monza. In Italy, Monza are set to sign European champions Matteo Pessina from Atalanta. Let's get to the transfer moves: These are the deals that are happening, or at least on the verge of getting done.

Chelsea consider move for Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United (The Guardian)

The player's agent Jorge Mendes has held talks with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly but any deal will depend on whether Thomas Tuchel is interested.

The France winger has been a target for Chelsea, who must decide whether to keep their bid for Raphinha on the table. Lukaku struggled to adapt to Tuchel’s system last season – the Belgium striker did not press enough and lacked mobility – and it is likely that signing Ronaldo would create similar problems. Signing Ronaldo would give Chelsea a proven goalscorer but although he scored 24 goals in 38 appearances for United last season, it was debatable whether he had a positive impact on the team’s play.

The attacking midfielder is set to become one of the first signings under new manager Erik ten Hag, while the club is also reportedly close to a deal for Feyenoord left back Tyrell Malacia. One year ago, a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs would have been hardly believable after Eriksen’s collapse on the field due to a cardiac arrest at the Euros. The Danish star needed to be resuscitated on the field before he was transported to a hospital. Manchester United news: The reason Cristiano Ronaldo is MIA (ClutchPoints)

Cristiano Ronaldo was a no-show at Manchester United's preseason training, but it has nothing to do with his desire to leave the club.

His attendance on that flight is seen as non-negotiable at this stage. As cars carrying United players began to drive into Carrington from 7.30am on Monday, Ronaldo was not among them. It is unknown when he’ll return, but his absence put fears that he’ll not be with the club in their pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia–although Manchester United have made it clear they want him there.

Ronaldo grew frustrated last year due to a lack of service, but that problem would be instantly solved by Eriksen and the pair would surely forge a devastating partnership. As The Athletic has previously outlined, United’s priority in midfield is a destructive defensive role which would allow more attack-minded players to flourish within Ten Hag’s system. He created the fourth-highest amount of chances (30) for Brentford last season despite playing in less than a third of their matches. Looking at his final half-season at Spurs in 2019-20, you can see he fulfilled his remit in making his largest share of actions within that central attacking area of the pitch. Nobody disputed that Eriksen was Brentford’s star player, but the expectation, attention and pressure will be on a completely different scale at his new club. The 30-year-old is expected to move to Old Trafford on a three-year deal after his contract with Brentford expired last week.

MANCHESTER UNITED saw Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney shine during their time at Old Trafford.

"Despite recent difficulties, I know I will always owe Sir Alex Ferguson a huge debt. "It is absolutely true, as he said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract. Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United no-show: The fall-out and ... (The Athletic)

What Cristiano Ronaldo's failure to show up at Manchester United's pre-season training means for the club, the team and their tour.

The pursuit of De Jong is a little farther off possible completion. Many people around the club are wondering if he will board that flight and beyond to Australia, which would be a significant commercial blow to the organisers of friendlies against Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Melbourne City and Aston Villa. Back at Carrington, the players are following developments but conversation is mainly on other topics, such as the intensity of Ten Hag’s sessions. Lisandro Martinez again reiterated his desire to leave Ajax during a meeting on Monday and United ideally want to wrap up the move before departing for Thailand, although Arsenal are battling for the defender’s signature. Manchester United’s Instagram welcomed back those players reporting to Carrington for the first time this pre-season with a video filmed in the entrance corridor of the first-team building. On the eve of the first game of 2021-22, Max Allegri said: “Ronaldo has told me he’s staying so let’s get that straight.” The Portuguese forward rejoined United days later. Eriksen’s free transfer should also be completed in the coming days. Some wonder if the trigger has been pulled because a deal is now on the table, with Chelsea giving proper consideration to signing him. Paulo Dybala, a previous target, is available on a free transfer. United have details and accept Ronaldo’s position, and he was not expected to attend training on Tuesday either. He took similar action in January when in an interview with Sky Sports he said: “I think to build up a good thing sometimes you have to destroy a few things. It is not known when he will return, however.

Ajax's legendary scout John Steen Olsen retired this month but the 79-year-old played a huge role in shaping the midfielder's career.

Spurs and Newcastle made clear they wanted to sign Eriksen on a free transfer this summer after some brilliant performances for Brentford that guided them to five victories in his first seven starts last season, but Ten Hag’s appointment by United at the end of April proved to be crucial. The defibrillator fitted after Eriksen’s cardiac arrest while playing for Denmark at Euro 2020 meant he was no longer permitted to play in Serie A and led to a short-term reunion with Thomas Frank at Brentford, who coached him for Denmark’s youth sides. He chose a site between his old school and former club in Middelfart, a small town at the gateway to Funen, Denmark’s third-largest island. But he has always rated Eriksen as his greatest discovery after famously persuading the then sporting director Danny Blind to travel to Denmark to sign the 16-year-old from Odense after Eriksen’s father had refused to allow his son to attend a trial in 2008. Steen Olsen’s departure at the age of 79 on 1 July marked the end of an era at Ajax after he played a part in bringing both Laudrup brothers to Amsterdam in the twilight of their careers and carried on the club’s longstanding Scandinavian association by scouting players such as Ibrahimovic, Jesper Grønkjær and Kasper Dolberg among many others. In the week that Steen Olsen, described by Zlatan Ibrahimovic as his “real father”, retired after 25 years’ service at Ajax, Eriksen has decided to become part of Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United rebuild.

What we learned from Monday's training session (Manchester United)

The returning Reds got a first taste of life under Erik ten Hag at Carrington.

The coaching staff were keen to pass on instructions to a group that contained the likes of Anthony Elanga, Eric Bailly, Facundo Pellistri and Fred, while Donny van de Beek appeared to be fully embracing the short passing exercise with gusto. The fresh faces got a first taste of the drill on show last week, a blur of movement and passing - with left foot and then right foot - and there was plenty of encouragement from the coaches on this front. The players left the building as a group, walking and talking together, with Anthony Martial in conversation with a muscular-looking Amad as they prepared for the first light jog.
