Russia-Ukraine war live updates: Ukraine forces withdraw from ... (The Washington Post)

Russian forces have used tactics in Lysychansk that were even more brutal than in nearby Severodonetsk, the Luhansk regional governor said.

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. The fight: A slowly regenerating Russian army is making incremental gains in eastern Ukraine against valiant but underequipped Ukrainian forces. Serhiy Haidai, governor of the Luhansk region, said Russian fighters attacked Lysychansk — a key piece in Russia’s effort to capture the Donbas region — using tactics even more brutal than in Severodonetsk, the neighboring city seized last month.

Russia-Ukraine live news: Ukraine forces retreat from Lysychansk (Aljazeera.com)

Military says the decision to retreat was made to 'preserve' the lives of defenders and avoid 'fatal consequences'.

“If Lysychansk is taken, strategically it becomes more difficult for the Russians to continue their offensive. “No matter how difficult it is for us today, we must remember that there will be a tomorrow.” “Presumably, the air defence system worked.” In order to preserve the lives of Ukrainian defenders, a decision was made to withdraw,” it said in a statement posted on social media. You know, this is a war crime, “he said. “And here we have what – clearly a residential building. They will have to take Sloviansk and Kramatorsk,” he told Al Jazeera. Opinion: Why did Russia give up Snake Island? - Naval News (Naval News)

In this case, it is difficult to say that the blockade is lifted, but Russia’s “so-called” gesture can be used as a diplomatic tool to negotiate the transportation of grain from Ukraine, as Russia has expressed its intention to support UN ‘s efforts to establish a humanitarian corridor. It’s technically possible for Ukraine to recapture Snake Island. But even if it would boost the morale of Ukrainian forces, because the island has symbolic value, Russia wouldn’t allow Ukraine to deploy troops on the island by conducting long-range missile strikes. - Snake Island is in an excellent position to maintain the Russian blockade of shipping lanes to Odesa and other Ukrainian ports. There’s still the question of how the “mighty(!)” Russian Air Force was unable to control the airspace in the Black Sea, but this inability was one reason that contributed to Russia abandoning Snake Island. The island became a symbol of Ukrainian resistance, as soldiers reacted to the Russian fleet with the words “Russian warship, go fuck yourself.” “On June 30, as a step of goodwill, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation completed their assigned tasks on Snake Island and withdrew the garrison stationed there.

The family’s lawyers also questioned the city’s release of only parts of the videos at the news conference and urged that it release all of the video. This, they said, would include footage from the eight officers involved directly in the shooting along with five others who were at the scene. One day after more than 100 demonstrators gathered just outside downtown, chanting and holding signs, protests continued with hundreds participating in a march and rally at City Hall organized by the Akron N.A.A.C.P. Mr. DiCello criticized how the police portrayed Mr. Walker in the news conference. The decision of whether to charge the officers involved with a crime will be determined by prosecutors, but charges have rarely been filed in similar cases of shootings involving the police. The chase was brief, and footage appears to show a number of officers pursuing Mr. Walker, weapons drawn, into a nearby parking lot while shouting at him. Seconds later, Mr. Walker, wearing a ski mask, exits the vehicle and begins to flee on foot. A few seconds later, the officers open fire, and Mr. Walker drops to the ground. In one video, a popping sound can be heard at one point, and an officer reports gunfire coming from the door of Mr. Walker’s car. At a news conference on Sunday, the police released body camera videos of the pursuit and shooting that showed officers’ actions but deepened many questions around his death, which remains under investigation. Mr. Walker’s girlfriend died recently in a car accident. A still photo released by the police showed a handgun on the seat, along with a gold ring.

Latest Russia-Ukraine War News: Live Updates (The New York Times)

Moscow's victory in Luhansk means it is in control of large parts of the Donbas region. Russia can now focus on capturing the last Ukrainian holdout in ...

Mr. Putin could claim a tangible military victory and use the territory as leverage in any future peace negotiations with Ukraine. Holding the Donbas would also expand Moscow’s “land bridge” connecting Russian territory to Crimea. Kremlin-backed separatists have held territory in the Donbas since 2014, after Russia annexed Crimea, a move that Ukraine and its Western allies have termed illegal. And Russia’s control of the eastern city of Izium will play heavily into the next phase of its military campaign in the Donbas. Home to coal mines and steel, an estimated 6.2 million people lived in the region before Russia’s invasion, according to the most recent census data. “There is a small number of our guys in and around Lysychansk, but they don’t lead an organized resistance anymore,” said Denys, a Ukrainian artillery officer stationed southwest of the city. Moscow is boasting of victory, in statements that make clear that the battle there was about far more than one city. In short, Russia’s likely strategy will be to create another pocket around the bigger industrial cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. “The flags have already been hung, and near my house, too — there is a Soviet monument, a tank,” he said. “Today, the Russian army once again brutally shelled” Sloviansk and the nearby city of Kramatorsk with rocket launchers, President Volodymyr of Ukraine said in his nightly address. The Donbas is made up of Luhansk and Donetsk provinces. On Sunday, at least six people were killed in Sloviansk and more than a dozen were injured by Russian rockets, Ukrainian authorities said. Russia can now focus on capturing the last Ukrainian holdout in neighboring Donetsk.

Police on Monday evening shut off access to the streets near what was believed to be Crimo’s home. “I am shellshocked by the whole thing,” he said. Crimo was taken back to Highland Park as the investigation continued. And for hours, the parade route remained eerily quiet. The victims ranged in age from 8 to 85.

As a word of an arrest spread, residents who had hunkered in homes began venturing outside, some walking toward where the shooting occurred. Police blockaded roads leading to the home in a tree-lined neighborhood near a golf course, allowing only select law enforcement cars through a tight outer perimeter. Police also found a ladder attached to the building. One of those killed was a Mexican national, Roberto Velasco, Mexico’s director for North American affairs, said on Twitter Monday. The Birth, Death and Rebirth of Ballsack Sports (Sports Illustrated)

The rise, death and rebirth of Ballsack Sports says plenty about the state of media in 2022.

Matt says such responses “played a factor” in pushing him to temporarily deactivate Ballsack Sports, adding the act of creating fake sports graphics was “where I’m least passionate about in life right now.” He also says he is now less focused on growing the account than he once was, noting he will only craft graphics “here and there.” Brooklyne Gipson, an assistant professor of communication at the University of Illinois and a research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Shorenstein Center, notes that content that “is emotionally provocative” often circulates the most on social media. Now, as minute sports newsbreaks continue to become a larger part of the sports media ecosystem, and as audiences clamor for the smallest rumors, the lack of clear public information makes fake transactional tweets more likely to take off, as they did with Ballsack Sports. He shared one in which Lillard said he deals with “so many morons everyday hating on my loyalty,” attributing the quote to a “42nd interview that never happened with Ballsack Sports.” Days after that, on March 5, Matt made an even more obvious plea for critical thinking, publishing a graphic, again featuring Lillard, with the phrase “Fake Quote” in the middle of it. I’m not sure if we’re quite there.” Having taken only two shots in the second half of Game 6, Harden was a target of intense public discourse, making him, in that moment, an ideal Ballsack Sports subject. This particular one, Matt says, “took a couple minutes longer,” as he wanted to find the perfect image and complement it with a quote that would lead to the most reach. But, says Schwartz, the famous broadcast ended up being “a moment where people were questioning the authenticity of what was coming to them over the airwaves in a way that they hadn’t been before.” Some listeners later wondered, in Schwartz’s words, “How will we know when news is news, or whether it’s just fiction?” Instead of picking a player to mimic who was drafted before LeBron James, he tried thinking of one who entered the league after LeBron but had already left the NBA. While waiting in the drive-through line, Matt pulled out his phone, scanned a Basketball Reference list of the 2004 NBA draft class and saw a name he thought was a perfect fit: “I’m like, that’s it right there. However, in the last 10 days, Ballsack Sports has returned, with Matt saying he wants to use its platform not only to occasionally create more “harmless but humorous” graphics but also discuss topics unrelated to sports. The day after James Harden was traded from the Nets to the 76ers, a story started circulating about what the breaking point was between the 2018 league MVP and star Brooklyn guard Kyrie Irving. It posited that Irving beat Harden in one-on-one almost daily and that the Nets’ ballhandling wizard even once called his teammate “washed” after locking him up in a scrimmage. “The logo itself was BS. It’s a play on bulls---.”

My heart aches for the people of Highland Park. We must continue to lift up this community, the victims, and their families in prayer. It can be done, it must be done, and we must continue to move toward that goal with all deliberate speed. It was hard to even believe," she said. "We just rode around and helped the police move off people out. "At first we thought it was firecrackers or part of the parade. On a day that we came together to celebrate community and freedom, we're instead mourning the loss, the tragic loss of life, and struggling with the terror that was brought upon us," she said. And I just pray for these families and pray for everybody who is out there, and pray that everybody is safe. "There are no words for the kind of evil that shows up at a public celebration of freedom, hides on a roof, and shoots innocent people with an assault rifle," he added. And people were saying 'we didn't know if it was firecrackers or shootings or what.' And we just got out of there. It's impossible to imagine the pain of this kind of tragedy until you're confronted with it." Toledo was shot and killed in front some of his own family members at the parade. Toledo was from Mexico and was visiting his family for about the past month.
