Max Verstappen had to make do with damage to his floor, finishing in seventh. Behind Leclerc, in fourth, was the Alpine of Fernando Alonso, in P5, ahead of Lando Norris in sixth. After starting on pole, Sainz pitted from second place for the soft tyre under the Safety Car – brought about by Esteban Ocon stopping on track.

Hamilton was briefly second after passing both Pérez and Leclerc in a three-wide move, but he couldn’t hold position and dropped back to fourth. But a safety car came out and Ferrari brought Sainz into the pits for fresher, grippier soft tires. It began with a frightening first-lap crash and ended with intense wheel-to-wheel battles for the podium positions.

He came out on the hard tyre intending to get to the end. With the Ferraris arguing amongst each other, Leclerc in second claiming he was being held up by leader Sainz, Hamilton was bearing down with a series of purple laps. Verstappen was in the pits at the end of the next lap after picking up a puncture. The dynamic of the season was screaming “that’s that then”. Fate had other ideas. Zhou’s accident just 21 seconds into the afternoon stopped the race for almost an hour. Up ahead Sainz was clear on soft rubber and would not be caught.

Courtesy of a P7 finish at Silverstone, the current F1 2022 Drivers championship standings leader Verstappen managed to earn a few points on his damaged car. Having led the race for a few laps before pitting for new tires, the seven-time F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton earned a P3 finish at his home venue, while Leclerc finished P4. However, as a result of the correct strategy and late safety car, Sainz managed to overtake his teammate Charles in the final laps of the race and went on to earn his first-ever race win in F1, in his 150th race.

His car rolled across the gravel before it flipped up over the barriers and hit the catch fencing. That incident has now been dealt with by the local authorities.
