Body Camera Footage of Jayland Walker Shooting Raises Questions (The New York Times)

AKRON, Ohio — A 25-year-old Black man who was killed last week by police officers in Akron, Ohio, suffered more than 60 gunshot wounds but was unarmed at ...

The family’s lawyers also questioned the city’s release of only parts of the videos at the news conference and urged that it release all of the video. This, they said, would include footage from the eight officers involved directly in the shooting along with five others who were at the scene. One day after more than 100 demonstrators gathered just outside downtown, chanting and holding signs, protests continued with hundreds participating in a march and rally at City Hall organized by the Akron N.A.A.C.P. Mr. DiCello criticized how the police portrayed Mr. Walker in the news conference. The decision of whether to charge the officers involved with a crime will be determined by prosecutors, but charges have rarely been filed in similar cases of shootings involving the police. The chase was brief, and footage appears to show a number of officers pursuing Mr. Walker, weapons drawn, into a nearby parking lot while shouting at him. Seconds later, Mr. Walker, wearing a ski mask, exits the vehicle and begins to flee on foot. A few seconds later, the officers open fire, and Mr. Walker drops to the ground. In one video, a popping sound can be heard at one point, and an officer reports gunfire coming from the door of Mr. Walker’s car. At a news conference on Sunday, the police released body camera videos of the pursuit and shooting that showed officers’ actions but deepened many questions around his death, which remains under investigation. Mr. Walker’s girlfriend died recently in a car accident. A still photo released by the police showed a handgun on the seat, along with a gold ring.

Akron police released body camera video of the fatal police shooting of Jayland Walker, which showed a gunshot fired from his car during a chase.

Video shows Walker leaving the passenger side of his car, wearing a ski mask, while the car was still moving. After slowing his vehicle near the Firestone Park neighborhood, minutes from the University of Akron main campus, Walker took off on foot toward a nearby parking lot, where he was fatally shot by police. The Akron police department’s internal affairs department is also investigating. Mylett said officers tried to administer first aid, but Walker died on scene. Body cam video shows Walker headed southbound on Route 8, where a shot was fired from his car and he reached speeds up to 70 mph. “I am urging all our residents, please reserve your full judgment until the investigation is complete.

“A King Alone,” by Rachel Kushner (The New Yorker)

A person stands in a parking lot in a trench coat in front of a liquor.

The man thanked George for the ride and got out of the car and started crutching. He waited and waited for the train to move so he could cross. He pulled over to direct the insect out, but mangled it by accident while trying to remove it from the vent with the edge of his insurance card. As they set off, the man raised his bottle in a toast, the turbulence of the uneven train tracks sloshing beer onto the car seat. He’d got one of his legs up over the linkage when the train lurched forward and started rolling. The man and George were possibly the same age. He held the crutches and also a full bottle of beer, as if this were no challenge. As the train appeared and rumbled past—industrial, Norfolk Southern, tankers of chemicals connected one to the next like hot-dog links—a man hobbled up to the driver’s-side window. He was on crutches, missing the bottom half of one leg. He was on a low road next to the French Broad, which divided the town in half. The sound of a train horn blasted into the car. The damp and teeming feel was familiar and unchanged.

In this case, it was the number of warm days that was incredible (warm days being a factor in anyone’s understanding), instead of anything more important, and there seem to be so few important things, she thought desperately, besides the weather.

Trump cracks down on deceptive fundraising by others using his name (The Washington Post)

We want to play ball because we are all in the same party on the same mission,” said one Trump fundraising adviser. “It’s no surprise that every candidate in the nation is trying to tap into it.” Every seat in the House and a third of the seats in the 100-member Senate are up for election. As of April 25, 46 of the 50 states had settled on the boundaries for 395 of 435 U.S. House districts. Here’s a complete calendar of all the primaries in 2022. Trump’s advisers have so far been selective in how they try to police the unauthorized use of his political brand, often reaching out privately in phone calls and text messages to candidates to tell them their behavior is not okay. “You do NOT want to disappoint Pres. Trump,” the message said, without any mention that it was from Hagerty’s campaign. Brnovich’s campaign is being led by National Public Affairs, a consulting firm founded by two veterans of Trump’s own campaign team: former Trump 2020 campaign manager Bill Stepien and former deputy campaign manager Justin Clark. Frequently, solicitations are designed to trick donors into thinking they are giving to Trump himself, a misrepresentation belied only by the fine print. The letter was one of dozens of demands that Trump’s attorneys and aides have sent in recent years. At one point, Trump told his team to slim down the emails, but he was then advised that would cost his PAC money, which he did not want, another adviser said. At the same time, Trump himself is no stranger to misleading fundraising appeals.

Palestinian Reporter 'Likely' Killed By Israeli Gunfire, U.S. Says—But ... (Forbes)

The death of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh reignited tensions between Israeli and Palestinian officials in May.

The Biden Administration has faced pressure from Congress to push for a conclusive investigation into the death of Abu Akleh, who was a U.S. citizen. Abu Akleh worked for the Al Jazeera network for 25 years and was famous in the Arab world for her coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The process of investigating Abu Akleh’s death has been contentious: The Palestinian Authority—which oversees security in much of the occupied West Bank—has refused Israeli requests to hand over the bullet that killed Abu Akleh or open a joint investigation, though PA officials let the U.S. examine the bullet last week.

Art has fashioned himself into a stunted thing to be “safe,” and yet he and Mercy are two planets locked in a mutually destructive orbit. And yet, with the entrance of Mercy, Art’s life takes a decided turn into occult realms where inexplicable things happen. My head filled with damp peat and moss, and my ears rang as I sank into the bog of myself… His latest novel, “The Pallbearers Club,” continues in the macabre vein but adds the dimension of quasi-autobiography.

Highland Park shooting: 6 dead at parade in Chicago suburb (Chicago Tribune)

After an hourslong manhunt, authorities arrested 22-year-old Robert “Bobby” Crimo III on Monday evening.

Highland Park was the setting of a large gathering in support of gun control on June 11. We have got to get corruption and evil out of our government and we have to elect men and women of honor and of courage to get this country and this state back on track,” he said in a poor quality video. In his prayer, he called on God to heal “the mental illness that is creating these problems.” “Today’s shooting is an unmistakable reminder that more should be done to address gun violence in our country.” “There’s been a lot of different events that have happened in the United States and this obviously now has hit very close to home,” Temple said. But there is much more work to do, and I’m not going to give up fighting the epidemic of gun violence.” My intent was to pray for the victims and those affected by today’s tragedy and for the shooter to be caught and prosecuted without further loss. Police on Monday evening shut off access to the streets near what was believed to be Crimo’s home. “I am shellshocked by the whole thing,” he said. Crimo was taken back to Highland Park as the investigation continued. And for hours, the parade route remained eerily quiet. The victims ranged in age from 8 to 85.
