U.S. riders in Tour de France 2022: Sepp Kuss, Brandon McNulty ... (Sporting News)

Here's what you need to know about the American cyclists in the 2022 Tour de France.

Another American making his Tour de France debut, Vermaerke is just seven months older than Simmons, but has less experience than his fellow 21-year-old cyclist. The 25-year-old is certain to be a pivotal part of the EF Education EasyPost team in 2022 supporting leader Rigoberto Uran. A former teammate of Kuss on Jumbo-Visma, Powless has already picked up plenty of experience in the grand tours. Racing alongside two-time defending Tour de France champion Tadej Pogacar on UAE Emirates, McNulty will play a crucial role in providing support while climbing and throughout the race. Jorgenson is one of the younger Americans in the field at just 22 years old. According to Cycling Weekly, he had a blood-flow issue early in his career that limited the power in his left leg that required lilac artery surgery.

Brits on Tour – the eight British riders taking on the Tour de France (Cyclingnews.com)

In an eclectic and versatile EF team, he'll be expected to help others, with several of his teammates strong options for a stage win on all different terrain. As well as reporting and writing news and features, Daniel runs the 'How to watch' content throughout the season. Unlike the three GC leaders and stage hunters Pidcock and Filippo Ganna, though, Rowe's glory will come when the team wins rather than any personal stage victories. A seventh place that few expected at the Tour of Flanders is his standout of 2022 so far. The Olympic mountain bike and world cyclo-cross champion is the only British rider making his Tour de France debut this year. As the squad's lead directeur sportif Steve Cummings told Cyclingnews earlier this week – Pidcock has "a role as a 'free electron', to take his chances where he can." Yates is part two of the Ineos leadership trio, the 29-year-old returning to the Tour after missing last year's race. Of the top two favourites – Tadej Pogačar and Primož Roglič – he hasn't been in a head-to-head battle with either since taking third at the 2019 Tour de Romandie, which Roglič won. Since then, he's been working in the sprints for André Greipel and Nacer Bouhanni. His form, too, is under question, then, but he'll have a chance to grow into the race rather than being 'on it' from day one. There's also a small British representation at the race, with eight riders taking the start in Denmark this week. There are still two former winners racing the Tour this year, though, as well as another GC contender, stage hunters, and domestiques.

Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) is halfway through his ride as the Slovenian Roglic rolls down the ramp to get his push for yellow under way. Kung's Groupama-FDJ teammate David Gaudu has already come home 37 seconds down on Van der Poel - time the French climber will have to make up in the mountains. First down the ramp, Jeremy Lecroq is first to cross the finish. Bringing a 64-tooth chain ring to the opening time trial is fine if you can handle it but looks a bit silly if you crash out after a few corners... He rides it out but that's a reminder of the potential perils of this wet course. The Ineos Grenadier co-leader will be pleased with that effort - he didn't crash and he didn't concede too much time to Roglic. He's followed shortly after by teammate Dani Martinez, who is 31 seconds down on the top. He caught Covid during the Tour de Suisse and so it remains to be seen how he performs here at the Tour. Thomas seems to be taking things very gingerly - aware, perhaps, that there's no point messing up his chances with an early crash. It's three seconds faster than Ganna but two seconds slower than the man in the hot seat, Van Aert. Crucially, Pogacar's time is eight seconds quicker than Vingegaard and nine seconds quicker than Roglic, his two main GC rivals. Wout van Aert goes through the intermediate check just one second down on Van der Poel and Mollema - so, the knee injury that kept him out of the Belgian national championships ain't so bad then, eh? It's no doubt all part of his ploy to lose time before the mountains so he can put in a push for the polka dot jersey and the odd stage win. Meanwhile, Jonas Vingegaard seems to be taking some risks on this wet course - and he's being cheered with every pedal stroke by the partisan local crowd. That's some trio to go one after the other!

The Dane is looking beyond his home country in search of stage victories at the Tour de France.

Cort will be aiming to win the second Tour de France stage of his career after his win into Carcassonne from a breakaway in 2018. There’s a short break between the Tour and the Giro so it’s hard to be off racing and be at my peak. “I don’t think that will be a possibility so I’m going to have to let the people down,” he said when it was mentioned that some had viewed him as a potential contender for green. Cort is not sure if he’ll be given some time off from team duties while in Denmark but he hinted that he would happily have a go at taking the polka dot jersey if the opportunity arises. “The stages in Denmark will be challenging. Stage 2, in particular, will see the crossing of the Great Belt strait, which could see winds playing a factor.

World time trial champion Filippo Ganna (Ineos) rolls down the start ramp to begin his effort. Aleksandr Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe) rolls down the start ramp with what looks like a balaclava under his aero helmet. Jérémy Lecroq (B&B Hotels-KTM) will be the first rider down the start ramp, at 16.00 CET, and the 176 starters set out at one-minute intervals thereafter. Marc Soler (UAE Team Emirates) is the last man to start the time trial. That said, Kasper Asgreen (QuickStep-AlphaVinyl) is out on the course and eager to make a big impression. Jack Haig, the second Bahrain Victorious rider in the start order, is out on the course. Dylan Teuns (Bahrain Victorious) begins his time trial to some jeers from the crowd at the start. One wonders if Van der Poel's bike handling could yet win him the day on rain-slicked course like this. The Italian comes home in 15:28, 2.64 seconds up on Van der Poel, for the new best time and an average speed of 51.2kph. Pogacar takes provisional second in 15:24, 2.48 seconds behind Van Aert. Doping at the Tour de France: From amphetamines to Armstrong ... (Sporting News AU)

Pogacar rode to glory in the 2020 and 2021 editions and he will join Louison Bobet, Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx and Miguel Indurain in a select group if he ...

Of all the riders who finished second to Armstrong during his reign, only 2002 runner-up Joseba Beloki does not have a doping offence to his name — and only since he was removed from the Operacion Puerto case by Spanish officials in 2006. Pollentier was duly ejected from the race in ignominy, leaving Bernard Hinault to win the first of his record-equalling five titles. Operacion Puerto, the still-ongoing investigation into doping in Spanish professional sports, saw Jan Ullrich and Ivan Basso among a number of riders banned from the 2006 race. The grim picture painted by Kimmage only became bleaker with the emergence of erythropoietin, a drug used to increase red blood cell production in anaemia sufferers. Although his official cause of death was "heart failure caused by exhaustion", authorities determined that the combination of drugs and alcohol in his system had impaired his judgement and allowed him to push his body beyond its capabilities. Their examination revealed an elaborate system of tubes under the rider's shorts and jersey, connected to a condom filled with 'clean' urine. Merckx was one of those who fell foul at a time when the scientists fleetingly caught up with the athletes. Drug testing became more widespread in the aftermath of the tragedy, but this simply ramped up the now decades-long spectacle of riders attempting to stay ahead of the testers by any means necessary. In 1949, the year he claimed the first of his two Tour successes, Italian rider Fausto Coppi was asked by a French radio station if he took la bomba — a heady combination of amphetamines, cola and caffeine. Upon Simpson's insistence, his team put him back in the saddle, only for him to fall again less than half a kilometre up the road. A police helicopter took the rider to Avignon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The trio proceeded to produce boxes of pills before Francis Pellissier added: "The truth is that we keep going on dynamite."

Winning the Tour de France requires subtle physics, young muscles ... (Independent Tribune)

1. The biomechanics of riding a bike · 2. How many calories do Tour riders burn? · 3. Biology explains why professional athletes are young.

The person confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade wasn't official. The partnership with Ice Cube’s CWBA will focus on identifying league-wide opportunities in the financial, tech, and production sectors, with a concentration on increasing direct and indirect spending to national Black businesses to help close America’s racial and economic wealth gap. Many people can and do get into the best shape of their lives when they are in their 50s or 60s. “To make a bicycle move, a Tour de France rider transfers energy from his muscles, through the bicycle and to the wheels that push back on the ground,” says Goff. Professional cyclists are in another league when it comes to producing power with their legs, but they are still limited by basic human biology. But as Fielding explains, in older people “the signal telling muscles to grow is much weaker for a given amount of exercise. Riding a bike is an easy thing to do once you learn, but the physics of how bikes and riders work together is surprisingly complicated.

Yves Lampaert won a rain-drenched opening time trial in 15 minutes 17 seconds, while Geraint Thomas was slowed down by his gilet.

The Belgian’s performance surprised some, given that he had complained of a knee injury hampering his form on the eve of the race. Yates, sporting a super-sized helmet and visor, last seen on Darth Vader, recorded a better time that had been predicted and may come into his best form as the race progresses. “That was the worst first half of a time trial that I have ever done,” the Welshman said. Defending Tour champion Tadej Pogacar (UAE Emirates) finished fastest of the major contenders for overall victory in third, despite a cautious ride through the treacherous urban bends. “Everyone’s telling you to take it easy, but the main thing when I won in Dusseldorf, is just flow, a nice smooth line. “The legs were good anyway, but it’s a shame about that blinking gilet.

It takes about 120000 calories to finish the Tour de France (Popular Science)

How many calories does a bicyclist need to finish the Tour de France? Let's just say it's the equivalent of 210 Big Macs.

So this year, while watching a stage of the Tour de France, note how many times the cyclists eat—now you know the reason for all that snacking. Tour de France cyclists can produce over 400 watts for the same time period. To make a bicycle move, a Tour de France rider transfers energy from his muscles, through the bicycle and to the wheels that push back on the ground. Tour de France cyclists are capable of generating enormous amounts of power for incredibly long periods of time compared to most people. And over the course of the Tour de France, the winning cyclist will burn the equivalent of roughly 210 Big Macs. Only an elite few humans are capable of completing a Tour de France stage in a time that’s measured in hours instead of days.

Tour de France stage 2 preview: A long bridge and lots of wind ... (VeloNews)

The tension will remain in the bunch for stage 2 with plenty of potential pitfalls for the GC riders.

The road across the bridge is relatively wide, at two lanes for each direction, but the riders will have to be cautious of the barrier that divides the two sides down the middle. While it’s not a full-on crosswind, the conditions will still be tricky to manage and the passage over the strait will be a stressful time for most of the bunch. On open roads, cyclists are actually barred from riding over the bridge and must use the rail link instead, meaning that it will be the first time cyclists will be allowed on its road. Though the wind can be swirling in this part of the world, it is the passages north and south that will have the greatest possibility for crosswinds. Matthews is not wrong in his expectation of wind and it’s likely to sweep across the whole stage with certain sections being more dangerous than others. However, the stress of trying to keep key riders towards the front creates an environment where crashes are far more likely and staying out of trouble is going to be hard.

The Tour de France is split into into 21 stages, each of which is completed every day - and there are three days set aside for the riders to rest. That means a rider can win the Tour de France without actually winning a single stage, as Chris Froome did in 2017. OTT streaming service Sling TV is reasonably priced and includes USA Network as part of its Sling Blue (opens in new tab) package. Not in Canada to catch that FloBikes stream? Hoping to make the biggest impact of this year's debutants is Aleksandr Vlasov, who was leading the recent Tour de Suisse before a positive Covid test scuppered his efforts. Wout van Aert, who stunned spectators by taking mountain, time trial and sprint stage victories last year, is one of those supporting Roglič, along with Vingegaard, while 2018 champion Thomas is being backed up by Adam Yates and Thomas Pidcock. The very least they must do this time is stay out of danger and force Pog to beat them. It appears they aren't, as we pass the road marker and the red Skoda is still to speed away. ...To the first road stage of the Tour de France 2022. Are the B&B riders going to try and "work Magnus Cort over" as Sean Kelly thinks they will? His assault on the same competition at the Dauphine was relentless and his team really worked to help him secure it. Cort is too strong for him too, coming round to take the lead in the King of the Mountains competition. Cort is alive to the move, diving on to Barthe's wheel.

I didn't have it the past two-and-a-half years, so to have it now in the coming days it would really be a pity." It's difficult to understand that I took the jersey. "It's a pity because also Tom Steels was one of the victims.

Marxism meets meteorology on Tour de France stage two's Great ... (Cycling Weekly)

The peloton will ride across the Great Belt Bridges on the way to Nyborg on Saturday afternoon, with wind forecast.

Nerves will be high in the peloton, and there will be riders fretting about the possibility of splits in the race, things going wrong. This brings us to the lived space, and seeing as cyclists are not usually allowed on the Great Belt Link, let alone a bike race, this will be a new one for everyone. One can know what part of the course of the Tour de France actually looks like, what it actually is, this is the perceived space. Second, there is the conceived space. It consists of two bridges, one being 6km long, and the other 7km, with the island of Sprogø in the middle. First, we can know what the bridges actually are, two structures built in the 90s to connect Denmark, which are both part of the E20 motorway network.

Powless: Urán is definitely still the team's Tour de France leader (Cyclingnews.com)

EF Education-Easypost comments on team's wild kit: 'we may as well push the limits'

But I feel that with the amount of people that are watching, cycling and the amount of influence that we have, we may as well use that to push the limits in more than just performance. "I think it's just a bit more wild than the normal and professional cycling but that's what we were trying to do," Powless said. "The first priority is definitely going to be on Rigo, and if I have to I'd sell myself for him."

Tour de France: Crash on the Great Belt bridge takes down Yves ... (VeloNews)

Crosswinds and nerves lead to crashes in the main field on stage 2.

Despite their efforts the Colombian was unable to make contact with the front of the group, even though a strong headwind appeared to slow the main field. Rigoberto Urán (EF Education EasyPost) had already crashed just before the bridge with several of his teammates dropping back to pace him. Lampaert and several of the riders who came down in his fall were able to make contact with the front of the race inside the final 15km.

Fabio Jakobsen, a Dutchman who less than two years ago was in a medically induced coma after a race crash, won the second stage of his debut Tour de France.

Yellow jersey Yves Lampaert and Rigoberto Uran were involved in a multi-rider crash on the bridge during stage 2. Injuries included brain and lung contusions, skull fractures, a broken nose and the loss of 10 teeth. Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, the two-time defending Tour champion, remains in optimal position in third place overall.

Who's Winning the Tour de France? (Bicycling)

Wout van Aert of Belgium took the yellow jersey after Stage 2 of the Tour de France.

The Tour’s a long way from over, but that’s certainly not the start they wanted. But he didn’t blow the doors off his biggest rivals: Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard and Slovenia’s Primož Roglič, the Jumbo-Visma teammates who finished second to Pogačar at the 2020 and 2021 Tours de France, respectively. And that “wee bit” was all he needed to win the stage. And considering how crazy the opening stages of the Tour de France can be, that’s a win for everyone. Lampaert was brought down by a crash as well, but the peloton seemed to slow a bit, perhaps out of deference to the Belgian’s yellow crash. EF Education-EasyPost’s Rigoberto Urán went down just before the peloton turned onto the Great Belt Bridge, but thanks to a little help from his teammates, the Colombian was able to rejoin the peloton.

Fabio Jakobsen caps incredible comeback with Stage 2 win at Tour de France, Wout van Aert rides into yellow (Eurosport.com)

Fabio Jakobsen (QuickStep - Alpha Vinyl) emerged unscathed from a chaotic climax to claim the first road stage of the Tour de France 2022 in a sprint finish. In victory the Dutch debutant completed his comeback from the live-threatening crash at the ...

I was next to Sagan - we kind of touched each other but luckily we stayed upright - and then it was a final stretch of 150m where I could launch, and I could pass the other two. The EF rider chose that point to end his ride, leaving it to Bystrom to wrap up the first combativity prize of the race, and ensure he would enjoy a podium presentation of his own. The EF rider chose that point to end his ride, leaving it to Bystrom to wrap up the first combativity prize of the race, and ensure he would enjoy a podium presentation of his own. I could stay behind Morkov, who dropped me off in the wheel of Van Aert, and then in the last few hundred metres I was a bit on the left. Into the final phase of the stage, and with the Great Belt Bridge looming, nerves began to fray in the bunch. Wout van Aert would have won it were it not for a brilliant Fabio Jakobsen, who licked Peter Sagan's plate then helped himself to the stage win. Right as they hit the bridge itself a touch of wheels caused another EF rider to go flying. He got them, outfoxing both B&B riders to steal the first mountains point on the Côte d'Asnæs Indelukke, before sailing away in the company of Bystrom to clean up the rest. The three mountains points available on the stage all came in the first half. Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education Easypost) was the most eager to get away on home soil. Jakobsen even came out on top from a tussle with Peter Sagan in the home straight, which gave him a clear run to the line. All of which came after several crazy, crash-filled closing kilometres, including multiple crashes on or ahead of the much-anticipated stretch that crossed the 18km Great Belt Bridge. Rigoberto Uran (EF Education Easy Post) and Kevin Vermaerke (Team DSM) were among those going down on the approach.

Stage 3 of the Tour de France Brings One Final Day in Denmark (Bicycling)

Stage 3 of the Tour de France will take the riders from Vejle to Sønderborg in what will likely be another day for the sprinters.

The forecast calls for temperatures in the 70s and partly cloudy skies, but wind will again be a factor. The riders will then follow a counterclockwise loop around the outside of the city center and up toward the finishing straight. The race comes into the center of town from the west, looping around and under itself just after crossing a bridge onto the island about 6km from the finish line.

Fabio Jakobsen takes Stage 2 at Tour de France; Wout van Aert dons yellow jersey (ESPN)

NYBORG, Denmark -- Dutch rider Fabio Jakobsen overtook Wout van Aert right on the line to win the second stage of the Tour de France while Van Aert took the yellow jersey on Saturday. It was a first Tour stage win for Jakobsen and a second in two days ...

Then, Cort was among riders who crashed approaching the bridge and Lampaert tumbled when he was on it. He got back up and worked hard to reach the peloton. Stage 3 on Sunday is again for sprinters. Roglic was the Tour runner-up in 2020 and has won the past three Spanish Vueltas. Cycling is a big part of Danish culture, everyone here had a bike growing up." "I can't believe how many people were on the sides of the road cheering me on,'' said Cort, who has the polka-dot jersey for best climber after taking three bonus points along the route's three minor climbs.

Jakobsen wins Tour stage two after late crash as Van Aert takes yellow (The Guardian)

Fabio Jakobsen, selected ahead of multiple stage winner Mark Cavendish for the QuickStep team, won stage two of the 2022 Tour de France.

Even before the bridge, tensions were high with Groupama FDJ’s Stefan Küng and Ruben Guerreiro of EF Education EasyPost caught on camera in a shoving match, with Küng appearing to push Guerreiro on the head. Three kilometres later, the overnight race leader, Yves Lampaert, and his Quick-Step teammate Michael Morkov were among the fallers after another switch of wheels took down half a dozen riders. The high-speed crash he suffered was one of the worst in the history of the sport and traumatised all those at the scene. Selected ahead of the multiple stage winner Mark Cavendish, it was his first Tour stage success and completed the journey from intensive care to Tour de France podium. The much-criticised omission of Cavendish by his team manager, Patrick Lefevere, was vindicated as Jakobsen took his team’s second stage win in less than 24 hours. It’s an amazing day and I’d like to thank all the people that helped me to here.”

Tour de France: Second place is good enough to put Wout van Aert ... (VeloNews)

Belgian superstar never gives up and comes away with the maillot jaune: 'If you keep fighting, you get the rewards sooner or later.'

“Even before the day before Mont Ventoux, I was second in a bunch sprint,” he said. “It’s the same jersey in the other races, but this one means so much more,” he said of yellow. Just last year, he was second in the Olympic road race and time trial as well as the world time trial championships. “From my experience in the last couple of years, there is always coming another day,” he said. “Immediately after the finish there was disappointment because I really thought I would win, but Fabio passed me in the final meters,” Van Aert said. Though second doesn’t count among the top pros, Van Aert’s dogged determination delivered him at least one day in the peloton’s most famous jersey.

Tour de France: Yellow jersey a silver lining for Wout van Aert (Cyclingnews.com)

'If you race hard every day, you get the rewards sooner or later,' says Jumbo-Visma rider after two second places.

With or without and the jersey, there's a lot of work to do," he argued. A lot were wroth two riders and the team was impressive all day. I was second the day before the stage over the Ventoux and then the day after I took maybe the most beautiful victory of my career. Now Van Aert and Jumbo-Visma will have to defend his one-second lead over Yves Lampaert during stage 3 to Sønderborg on Sunday and then in northern France and onto the Paris-Roubaix cobbles next week. "It's the same jersey as the other races but this one means so much more. Last year in the Tour I came up short in the early stages but kept believing I could do it.

Belgian finishes second for 25th time, but this podium placing came with a bonus.

“It’s the same jersey in the other races but of course this one means so much more. Last year in the Tour I always came up short for a lot of stages in the beginning, but I kept believing I could do it. He is the definition of consistent in 2022. Again, nothing came of it, as all the riders caught up in it claimed the same time thanks to the 3km to go rule. Van Aert claimed the lead in the general classification after he finished second on Saturday, the second consecutive stage in a row that he narrowly missed out on winning. Van Aert described the time spent in the middle of the sea as “an easy part without public on the side of the road”, and that’s all it was really.

Caleb Ewan's sprint derailed on stage 2 of Tour de France (Cyclingnews.com)

Lotto Soudal rider tries to fight to finish with skipping gears after derailleur bent on run in but can't pedal when chain gets stuck.

“I was just behind [Peter] Sagan and Jakobsen, and then there was kind of like a prop on the bridge and someone ran into my derailleur and it was bent.” Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) looked ready to make a mark on the opening sprint stage of the 2022 Tour de France when first he surfed the wheels to sweep up intermediate points and then worked his way into a prime position on the lead into the final sprint. “I was fighting for wheels, looking to who had the best lead out and then I actually turned the final corner in the last 700m, in a really good position,” said Ewan in a Twitter video from the team.
