"It's a no-brainer," Ashton said, of this new era of color-conscious casting. In Captain Henry Ossory (a mustachioed Theo James), Ashton said Julia finds someone who "loves her for her flaws rather than despite them." "It's something I don't think she was ever expecting," Ashton said. "Mr. Malcolm's List," which was first a 2019 short film featuring most of the original cast, is all about the unpredictable nature of connections, the very thing Ashton bets on when she makes her matches. "My imaginative scenes was always wide enough to cast myself in the stories as I read them. Jane Austen gets a diverse remix via the upcoming "Persuasion" adaptation. "I'm a very list-free person. Mr. Malcolm's courtship strategy is guided by the list of 10 qualities he needs in a woman. "(The list) becomes this metaphor for him. The couple also is expecting a child. Ashton tells us about walking the line between hero and villain, and tapping into the iconography of the Regency period in 'Mr. Malcolm's List.'
Putting on the little ballet slippers that they wore at that time, it's extremely ... again, it's just very, very gentle and very ... it has a softness to it that really does transport you from this world to that one. I love it mostly because there wasn't a huge amount of budget to make a lot of costumes. I embraced the lightness and the kindness of the movie. So it was just like "tick, tick, tick, tick, tick" in the space of 24 hours. I love that you touched on kindness, because I feel like Julia sort of walks the scorned woman archetype throughout the film and she does make questionable choices, but she's never demonized. I think they were the characters that I always warmed to as a child, when I was watching animated films or when you were at a puppet show, or just those first formative steps into understanding different creative worlds. I think lots of actors really desperately would like to be liked, but I don't know. And that's something I think women can really understand, when society starts to kind of close in on you with that messaging of where you're supposed to be at in your life versus where you might be. I wasn't drawn to Julia's extremes necessarily, but I'm always drawn to walking that line, I think. I'm a rom-com fan, I'm a fan of the new Regency-core journey that we're on as an industry, so that was an intersection that was a tick. And I just really embraced the arc of that. Her subversive arc appealed tremendously to Ashton, who'd never had the chance to star in a period romance before "Malcolm's List." The process was undeniably euphoric for the actor, especially when it came to the film's gorgeous costumes, but not without a few corset-related challenges.

And I just had an intentionality, I think from the end of 2019 where I just thought, ‘I just want to be of service as much as possible in my work. And one of the ways I can do that is to amplify fledgling female filmmaking talent.’” I was always aware that there was a real chasm between where my imagination could go and where the scope of the filmic interpretations were,” she says. And to play, you get to leave your ego at the door. You get to just really play the truth of someone’s experience, and people are messy. And that feels like a real tick off the bucket list. I did not expect it to happen,” Ashton says of joining the Marvel world. “But I think it was already starting to change,” she continues. And the meeting of rom-com and Regency romance, two genres that I love, the intersection of the two of them is even more delicious. “I got a phone call saying, ‘there’s the script from ‘Mr. Malcolm’s List,’ it’s part of this exciting new wave of Regency work and they need an answer by tomorrow morning,’” Ashton recalls. “This film is a low-budget film; it was a labor of love for so many people. There’s also something extremely liberated about the city – I was at Gay Pride over the weekend, having the absolute time of my life. As I’ve spent more and more time in New York over the years, I’ve found there’s something unbelievably special about the energy here that has ultimately made it my favorite city in the world. It would be my weird specialist skill to be able to look at a shade of off-white and not see just “off-white,” but instead see “Vintage Wedding Veil.” Or a type of yellow that was meant to go on your nails that indeed should not just be called “yellow,” it should be called “Buttermilk Afternoons.” With shades of green or blue, don’t try to compare them to anything in nature, for God’s sake, let’s call them something like “She’s Got to Have It.” I get it. But actually, I think I would be someone who makes up the names of paint colors or nail varnish colors, or the names of lacquers of any nature. Those films created a real expansion inside of me and gave me a cinematic language I would never have had otherwise. I literally applied for it the day after my 18th birthday, because you had to be 18 to see all the movies.
The actor gets candid about playing a vengeful society lady in Mr. Malcolm's List and the lead villain in the Captain Marvel sequel.
You saying there’s been a lock and key around the genre is so apt. Zawe Ashton: It’s such a good question because it encapsulates both the passion that I have for this style of film, but also the sadness that encapsulates my experience of this genre from an actor’s perspective. And yet, the historical factuality is really called into play when we’re suddenly trying to inject the genre with people of color. Ashton, as her father aptly noticed, plays the antagonistic role with comedic verve, far and away having the most fun of anyone onscreen. “You have to have a lane, right?” Ashton’s lane has been filled with a range of deliciously dark characters, even though she is, in real life, contagiously ebullient, always one smile away from laughter.
