Nadal Survives Cerundolo Scare At Wimbledon | ATP Tour | Tennis (ATP Tour)

Rafael Nadal didn't have things all his own way Tuesday, but he stepped up when needed to reach the Wimbledon second round for the 14th time.

His breakthrough run propelled the 23-year-old from No. 103 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings to No. 51. But, from seemingly down and out, the World No. 41 began to turn the tables in dramatic fashion. "It was my first match and as I know, every day is a test and today was one of these important tests. He will face Ricardas Berankis in the second round after the Lithuanian defeated Sam Querrey 6-4, 7-5, 6-3. "It's obvious that for me it's been three years without being here, without playing on this amazing surface, so very happy to be back. For me, it's always amazing playing here on this court and I can't thank everyone enough for the support."

When Nadal went 0-40 down in the fifth, a decisive set was suddenly an odds-on shot, but again it was the jolt he needed to roar back into life. And if the 23-year-old enjoyed a little good fortune in game five to retrieve an early break of serve – Nadal slipped at 15-40 but still did almost enough to save the point – it was no more than he deserved. Several exceptional rallies edged Nadal’s way to get him to deuce and a brilliantly-improvised sliced forehand earned him the only break point he needed in the game.

Rafael Nadal Escapes 1st Round And Covid Chaos To Advance At ... (Forbes)

Rafael Nadal escaped a tough first-round test and the Covid-19 chaos in his half of the draw to advance to the second round at Wimbledon.

Djokovic has said he has added motivation to win his fourth straight Wimbledon because he is not currently permitted in the U.S. to play the U.S. Open because he is not vaccinated against Covid-19. And in my case, the last three years I didn’t put a foot on a grass court, no? He said he played through the French Open because he received multiple anaesthetic injections during the tournament. Nadal has so far escaped the Covid chaos in his half of the draw that caused last year’s runner-up, Matteo Berrettini, and Marin Cilic to pull out of the draw. He is drawn to meet No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic in the final. He is now 15-0 in majors this season after winning the Australian and French Opens to increase his all-time men’s record to 22 Grand Slam singles titles.

'Rafael Nadal's struggled with big servers on grass', says top analyst (Tennis World)

Rafael Nadal showed up at Wimbledon in good condition, although we will have to wait for a few matches to be able to pass judgment.

He has Casper Ruud, the 3rd seed, in his section and I pick him against Ruud on grass," Austin said of Tiafoe. Could he be a threat to Rafael Nadal? I think so. The Iberian also hopes to shine at Wimbledon, where he hasn't triumphed since 2010. The 36-year-old from Manacor has risen to 22 Slams, +2 from Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in the all-time ranking. Thanks to a series of infiltrations and the help of Dr. Cotorro, the Spanish champion raised his 14th trophy at Roland Garros leaving everyone speechless. "The last thing I expected was to come back from surgery and win two titles in a row," Berrettini said after retaining his Queen's Club crown. Rune, Musetti and Draper are third, fourth and fifth — respectively — in the Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan, trailing only Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. After winning at Stuttgart and The Queen's Club, the Italian enters Wimbledon on a nine-match winning streak. The Italian leads Garin 2-1 in their ATP Head2Head, though Tuesday's contest will be the pair's first meeting on grass. That's what I think I achieved in the last couple of weeks, to get as many matches on grass as possible. "I love the serve-and-volley game, coming in as much as I can, slicing, attacking. I said — I insisted, in fact — that I can play on this surface, and it remains one of my favourite surfaces that tennis has to offer. The fourth seed is widely regarded as one of the game's best clay-courters, so that statement is not one to be taken lightly. "People kind of doubted that I can play on grass, I think it's fair to say. A new treatment on his chronic foot injury has provided relief from pain both on the court and in his daily life. In stark contrast to Nadal, Tsitsipas played three grass-court events in the last month, saving his best for last. It's a little bit more predictable when you have the history in the weeks before."

Wimbledon 2022 live: Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams score ... (Sporting News AU)

Rafael Nadal live score: The French Open champion gets his Wimbledon campaign underway against Francisco Cerundolo before Serena Williams makes her return.

Cerundolo gets two points of his own but Nadal finishes the game with a neat volley at the net. Nadal saves the first with a volley at the net but Cerundolo slams home the next. Nadal gains control thanks to back-to-back errors from Cerundolo as the Argentine then hits another shot long. Nadal double faults the first point and is then given the runaround by Cerundolo to fall 0-30 behind. Two big serves put Nadal two points to the good before he overhits a forehand down the middle. Cerundolo gets break point but Nadal stays calm with a big serve down the centre. Nadal opens his body up to hit a lovely forehand winner as Cerundolo can only watch on, feet rooted to the grass. Cerundolo does well to avoid becoming a victim of the serve and volley by making the drop shot and snatching a point off Nadal at 15-40. Cerundolo hits a pinpoint forehand winner to go 0-30 up before Nadal matches him with one down the line which the crowd love. Nadal responds with a forehand winner to save the first break point but finds the net once more and Cerundolo breaks again! Nadal then hits a drop shot which Cerundolo makes but steers his shot into the net. Cerundolo then hits one into the net and Nadal has three break points.
