Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Novak Djokovic, Emma Raducanu and Andy ... (The Independent)

Follow all the action from SW19 as the grand slam gets underway.

It wouldn’t be the early rounds of Wimbledon if there wasn’t a rain delay. The match is delicately poised but the rain has to clear up first. There are a few more umbrella’s coming up as the rain gets slightly heavier. The word coming out of Wimbledon is that there won’t be any play until 12:30pm at the earliest. Closing out the action will be Murray, who faces James Duckworth. Murray made it to the third round last year but was emphatically defeated by Denis Shapovalov and admitted afterwards that he was questioning his future. The US Open champion has shaken off injury concerns but faces a tricky opening match against world No 46 Alison van Uytvanck, who reached the fourth round herself in 2018.

Wimbledon is back and there's a stacked line-up on day one at SW19. Join our writers for all the action.

So thank the lord for the closed roof on Centre Court and Court No 1, and discussions of the temperature and ball-flight therein. And by the looks of it, rain, even if “mostly cloudy” is the forecast on the official website. It would have been reasonable to assume that such a scenario would suggest a significant change at the top of the sport but Djokovic and Nadal are the main protagonists atWimbledonfor another year. He held his serve for the first game against Andujar, and gets chance for an early break, and one he gobbles up. It’s heavy, and the covers are on across the campus. That’s saved by an overhead by Andujar, but who double faults to hand over another, makes a bizarre, failed Hawkeye challenge on his second serve, then clunks a forehand into the ether to hand over the first set.

Giron's a tough opponent to face in the first round. However, he lost in the first round of the Australian Open and didn't make a deep run in any of the tournaments that followed. Marcos Grion's best result this year has been a semi-final run at the Dallas Open. He almost made it to the final, but was unable to close out the match despite holding four match points. He stunned Alexander Zverev in straight sets in the second round, scoring his first win over a top-10 player in the process. Rune hasn't been able to make the switch to grass successfully. Rune is currently in the midst of a breakthrough season.

Wimbledon 2022: Djokovic opens bid for No. 7 at Centre Court (Idaho Statesman)

A glance at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tennis tournament of 2022: SURFACE. Grass courts. SITE. The All England Club. SCHEDULE.

The women’s and men’s singles champions will each earn 2 million pounds ($2.5 million), which is 14.9% less than in 2019, the last pre-pandemic edition of the tournament. That is why Serena Williams, who has won seven of her 23 Grand Slam singles championships at Wimbledon, is not seeded — her ranking is outside the top 1,200 because she has not played a singles match since a year ago at the All England Club. Djokovic is ranked No. 3, and Rafael Nadal is ranked No. 4, but they moved up to 1-2 in the seedings because the top two men in the rankings, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, are not in the field. There will be no ranking points awarded for players at Wimbledon this year. A victory would be Djokovic's 80th at the All England Club, which would make him the first man or woman to have won at least that many matches at each of the four major tournaments. Iga Swiatek is seeded No. 1 in the women’s draw; Djokovic is seeded No. 1 in the men’s draw. There are no night sessions, unlike at the other three Grand Slam tournaments.

Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray energise restored Wimbledon ... (The Guardian)

With the tournament at capacity for the first time in three years, the pair electrified an otherwise genteel atmosphere.

He looks good too, loose and limber and comfortable in his movements, with some of that old bounce, the choppy little steps, the slice, the shambling dashes to the net. Victory made it a perfect, if slightly tentative, start for the return of Wimbledon’s full house. The standard dipped for a while. There was a different kind of energy in seeing Raducanu win here, a straight‑sets victory against the experienced Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck that might have been a lot more awkward. For anyone with a sense of scale the story to this point isn’t disappointment, or distracting perfume deals (she really could have had a lot more of those). It is instead one golden run where the cards all fell right, a feat that may well remain a one-off for her and for anyone else. There has been an eagerness to cling to these pegs of the pre‑pandemic summer: Glastonbury, Wimbledon, queueing endlessly for a low-cost airline seat. Wimbledon is a place to luxuriate, to suck the sweetness out of the summer, to feel lush and flush and woozy and sated. There were gasps and coos as she unfurled a lovely coiled backhand, then sighs and murmurs as she netted a forehand. Murray drew the loudest roars later in the evening. The hill was beautifully lush and green in between the rain. In the shop under No 1 Court they are selling novelty oversized tennis rackets for £600. Are we really in that place? We have the plastic strawberry punnet, the cargo short, a stagey politeness.

Wimbledon 2022 LIVE: Rafael Nadal, Iga Swiatek and Serena ... (The Independent)

Follow all the action from SW19 on day two of the grass-court grand slam.

“To play on Centre Court and get a win first time, it’s amazing. Murray will need to play better, especially from the start, but there were encouraging signs throughout that he is indeed fit enough for the Championships after arriving in SW19 on the back of an injury scare. You knew you had seen this fight before and although Murray tempered the baying crowd by reminding them of how grateful he is to still be enjoying these opportunities at all, the exciting part is there could be a lot more to come. It was another night on Centre Court where Andy Murray played all the hits, and even had room for a new trick. “I always wanted to achieve, always wanted to be in this level, always wanted to inspire players from my country, from my continent. Now every time I go back, I’m just going to have a great first experience. Today marks the return of Nadal, back for the first time since 2019 and fresh from opening up a lead in the race to finish with the most men’s grand slam titles with 22. The favourite in the women’s singles is World No 1 Iga Swiatek and she opens up her championships on Centre Court against Jana Fett, taking the traditional slot on the first Tuesday of play after defending women’s champion Ash Barty’s sudden retirement. It’s quite tough for her because for elderly people it’s most important to have a routine and, right now, there is lots of bombing and shooting going on in Odessa, in my hometown. “Of course, I’m still very, very sad about the situation that is happening right now and knowing how many people have lost their lives because of the invasion,” Svitolina told CNN Sport. “It makes me very sad. Her being half Romanian means a lot also for the Romanians. The seven-time Wimbledon champion is back in singles action after cruelly being forced to retire from her first round match at SW19 last year and the 40-year-old, third up on Centre Court, looks to ignite her comeback from a hamstring injury when she takes on Harmony Tan.

He broke early for a 3-1 lead, but Djokovic settled into some rhythm of his own to reel off five consecutive games and secure the first set.

"The last thing I expected was to come back from surgery and win two titles in a row," Berrettini said after retaining his Queen's Club crown. Rune, Musetti and Draper are third, fourth and fifth — respectively — in the Pepperstone ATP Race To Milan, trailing only Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. After winning at Stuttgart and The Queen's Club, the Italian enters Wimbledon on a nine-match winning streak. The Italian leads Garin 2-1 in their ATP Head2Head, though Tuesday's contest will be the pair's first meeting on grass. That's what I think I achieved in the last couple of weeks, to get as many matches on grass as possible. "I love the serve-and-volley game, coming in as much as I can, slicing, attacking. I said — I insisted, in fact — that I can play on this surface, and it remains one of my favourite surfaces that tennis has to offer. The fourth seed is widely regarded as one of the game's best clay-courters, so that statement is not one to be taken lightly. "People kind of doubted that I can play on grass, I think it's fair to say. A new treatment on his chronic foot injury has provided relief from pain both on the court and in his daily life. In stark contrast to Nadal, Tsitsipas played three grass-court events in the last month, saving his best for last. It's a little bit more predictable when you have the history in the weeks before."

Yulia Putintseva (seeded 27) is under way against Alize Cornet on Court 10 and it’s 2-2 in the first set. Raducanu, the 19-year-old US Open champion, performed admirably on her Centre Court debut to see off Alison Van Uytvanck. Murray dropped a set against James Duckworth before finding his rhythm and progressing to a second-round date with John Isner. The Italian reached his first grand slam final at the All England Club last summer, losing in four sets to Novak Djokovic, and has been the form player on grass this summer. They will be back to play the third and final set. There has been an eagerness to cling to these pegs of the pre‑pandemic summer: Glastonbury, Wimbledon, queueing endlessly for a low-cost airline seat. Sometimes, the full length net is used for singles matches (such as the Katie Swan-Marta Kostyuk singles match) but there have to be ‘sticks’ in the tramlines to make sure the net height is the same. The big names are yet to head out to the show courts but there are many singles matches under way at SW19 and I’ll keep you updated if any stories develop in them. Sakkari has been in good form this year and will be looking to make it to the second week, something she hasn’t done before. Tennis nets have different lengths depending on their use – shorter lengths for singles (with the posts in the tramlines) and full length for doubles. Maybe a reader who plays tennis at a decent standard might be able to write in and tell us if it has any bearing on performance. But then why not have all nets full length width and then you just have to change the sticks. Britain’s Paul Jubb has wasted no time in making the most of his moment in the spotlight against Kyrgios on Court 3.

Nadal goes long twice and leaves Cerundolo within two points of the set. He whips a forehand across court and forced Nadal behind the baseline. Rafael Nadal has only been beaten twice from two sets to love up in his career. Cerundolo turns a backhand over the ball and again puts it out of play. The favourite in the women’s singles is World No 1 Swiatek and she opened up her championships on Centre Court with a straight-sets victory over Jana Fett. There is more Wimbledon royalty in action on day two with Williams making her long-awaited return. That’s compared to defending champion Novak Djokovic, who has 20 titles, with the six-time champion up and running after swiftly moving into the second round with a hard-fought four-set win over Soonwoo Kwon. Wimbledon 2022 results: Serena Williams loses on Centre Court ... (Sporting News)

Rafael Nadal defeated Francisco Cerundolo on Centre Court while Serena Williams suffered a loss to Harmony Tan on Day Two at Wimbledon.

Nadal saves the first with a volley at the net but Cerundolo slams home the next. Cerundolo gets two points of his own but Nadal finishes the game with a neat volley at the net. Two big serves put Nadal two points to the good before he overhits a forehand down the middle. Cerundolo gets break point but Nadal stays calm with a big serve down the centre. Cerundolo does well to avoid becoming a victim of the serve and volley by making the drop shot and snatching a point off Nadal at 15-40. Nadal responds with a forehand winner to save the first break point but finds the net once more and Cerundolo breaks again! Cerundolo hits a pinpoint forehand winner to go 0-30 up before Nadal matches him with one down the line which the crowd love. Nadal then hits a drop shot which Cerundolo makes but steers his shot into the net. A forehand beyond the base line gifts Nadal another point but he goes on to hold. Cerundolo then hits one into the net and Nadal has three break points. Williams makes a mess of the first but Tan finds the net and she gets it. Tan gets another, this time luring Williams to the net with a drop shot and then lobbing her.

Serena Williams Exits Wimbledon in the First Round, Again (The New York Times)

Williams, who had not competed in singles on tour since withdrawing from Wimbledon last year with an injury, lost in three sets to Harmony Tan of France.

Williams served for the match at 5-4 and was two points from victory at 30-15 only to lose the next three points and her serve when she hit an unconvincing forehand approach shot that Tan slapped past her for a backhand winner. That was certainly understandable in light of her long layoff, and the crowd reacted with awkward silence at first. Tauziat understood the importance of keeping Williams out of her prime hitting zones and of keeping her on the move. She also looked as tight as piano wire, struggling to let her natural power flow and missing swing volleys and approach shots by the bunch while laboring to move laterally. It was a ragged but ultimately admirable performance as she tried to shake off the rust and solve the myriad riddles posed by Tan, who had watched Williams only from afar until their duel. But at least she can leave the All England Club with a less painful memory than what she took from last year’s Wimbledon, when she tore a hamstring after slipping in the first set of her first-round match with Aliaksandra Sasnovich, hobbling off Centre Court in great distress. She then had to navigate the tiebreaker despite the weariness in her legs and the tension in her gaze. Williams and her player box full of family, friends and team members, including her new coach Eric Hechtman, were not able to celebrate. She won two sets instead, turning what could have been a feel-good story for Williams into a narrow defeat that will repose the question of how much more professional tennis Williams intends to play. Williams dominated the second set but Tan fought back in the third while Williams’s level and energy dipped even if her fighting spirit did not. “When I saw the draw I was really scared, because it’s Serena,” said Tan, 24. Her grueling duel with Tan was a stylistic contrast that lasted 3 hours and 11 minutes.

Wimbledon 2022 Day 2: Tan stuns Serena - Roland-Garros - The ... (Roland-Garros)

French debutante wins marathon as Roland-Garros champions pass opening tests at SW19.

Also for my game, I'm the type of player that needs to put in a lot of work to play good tennis, a lot of hours on the court, a lot of hours in the gym. “I have a great family and I will have plenty of things to do, no? I think that's, like, what makes you a champion and what makes you get to that next level, is how you figure out how to win in these tough moments. “I think I never expected honestly to be here at 40 years old competing and playing another Wimbledon, so I consider myself very fortunate. “But not just that, with my tennis as a whole. “The last few years for me personally have been tough. But at the end of the match I improved. “It's impossible to play the best every day. At the most critical moment, I think I raised my level. “When I saw the draw, I was really scared, because it’s Serena Williams; she’s a legend. Swiatek rallied back from 1-3 down in the second set and has now won her last 36 consecutive matches, equalling Monica Seles’ winning streak from 1990. Maybe a week ago I could have gave more.
