The wild history of the Bavarian castle hosting this week's G-7 summit (The Washington Post)

Schloss Elmau has been a Nazi vacation camp, a field hospital and a sanctuary for Holocaust survivors. Its backstory tracks closely with Germany's ...

In a country that loves compound nouns, there is, of course, a word for that process: “Vergangenheitsbewältigung,” or coming to terms with the past. Müller-Elmau became proprietor in 1997 and set out to reestablish Schloss Elmau as a “cultural hideaway,” although he shunned his grandfather’s philosophy. Today, some 220 concerts are held at the castle every year, as it continues to pull in the biggest names in classical music from the world over. Most of the hotel had to be demolished and reconstructed. And now I could make a new bottle for a new wine. “Three judges of the court were former Nazi party members,” he said. “Purim used to be a joyous festival and those celebrating it had not suffered directly,” he wrote. The castle didn’t stay out of family hands for long. Between 1947 and 1951, the castle served as a sanatorium for Holocaust survivors and displaced people. Silence prevailed during the religious readings, “at times interrupted by sobbing,” he wrote. “My grandfather wanted to create a place of communal living where you could escape from yourself, from what he called self-interest, self-centeredness,” Müller-Elmau said. It hosted prominent politicians and cultural figures of the Weimar Republic, the German government between 1919 and 1933.

The hotel is proud of its sustainability concept, and has incorporated it in many aspects of its operations.

The hotel is also fueled by a combined heat and power plant that is largely heated by wood waste. Around 20% of the electricity is supplied by the hydroelectric power plant on the stream that flows over the property; the rest is green electricity provided by a utility company. Foodies will also be in heaven, as there's a wide variety of dishes to chose from in the hotel's nine restaurants. After World War II, Müller was convicted by the Allies in denazification proceedings because of his "glorification of Hitler in speech and writing," and the castle was confiscated by the US Army. Firstly, thanks to its location in the very south of Germany close to the Austrian border, Schloss Elmau is both beautiful and remote. In fact, the hotel was designed to hold just such a prestigious event and there are many reasons why it works.

Schloß Elmau appears to have found the best hotel staff members in the world as everyone from the front desk clerks to the general manager did his utmost to make guests feel comfortable and at home. Before 2007, Elmau was merely a castle hotel and I had stayed there several times while a graduate student at the Ludwig-Maximilians Universität München (University of Munich), which should give you an idea of what the budget for a visit was. During my most recent stay, my room was one of the property’s few tower rooms and provided majestic views to the south, west, and east. The summit’s meals are being crafted by Christoph Rainer, chef at the hotel’s Luce d’Ororestaurant, and will highlight no doubt regional cuisine made from local ingredients. Just 62 miles (100 kilometers) from Munich, this haven sits at an elevation of 3,478 feet (1,060 meters), built at the onset of the First World War by the theologian Johannes Müller, a philosopher who later adulated Adolf Hitler, as a retreat for his followers. Artists including Alfred Brendel, Yehudi Menuhin, and Benjamin Britten as well as the Amadeus Quartet have performed there, among others.

G7 summit Germany venue Schloss Elmau has deep connection ... (Republic World)

Schloss Elmau's connection to India is attributed to its owner Dietmar Müller-Elmau, who is said to have spent his early years in India.

When Müller-Elmau left India, he carried a part of the country with him as his fascination for Indian architectural designs and woodwork prompted him to take the majority of floor-to-ceiling windows, furniture and curtains for his hotel from India and other Asian countries overseas. However, the venue this year is special for another reason, its deep-rooted connection with India. Among a gamut of facilities, the castle's connection with India is reflected through the motif of "the elephant" found running across the facility. Germany-based Schloss Elmau castle, which has been chosen as the venue for the 48th Group of Seven (G7) summit, is back on the scene with its rich history.

The 'India Connection' of Schloss Elmau is attributed to the owner Dietmar Muller, who had lived in India in his youth.

In the first working session on Sunday, the heads of state and government of the G7 discussed global economic issues. On the sidelines of the Summit, the prime minister will hold bilateral meetings with leaders of some of the participating countries. We are also united by our belief in democracy and the rule of law," said Chancellor Scholz at the beginning of the summit. Back home in India the Ganesha is referred to as the elephant God. Ganesha has been the central theme of the facility including a restaurant being named after the God. "There, the inspiration of individual freedom is very pronounced," Miller had once said in an interview. He was involved in charitable activities and made an investment in the sector of information technology (IT).
