The high court's monumental ruling will have major impact on Texas, which has a trigger law banning abortions that goes into effect soon.
Blackmun agreed with Coffee and Weddington’s argument that the right to privacy in the U.S. Constitution extended to a woman’s right to choose to have an abortion. Now, legal experts say this may represent the first of many legal questions that will need to be sorted out by the courts as the state begins to navigate an entirely new reproductive health care landscape. Under the current law banning abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy, these abortion funds have helped hundreds of pregnant people leave the state to get an abortion. In December, the court heard arguments in Dobbs v. Texas, the birthplace of Roe v. Most of Texas’ neighboring states are also expected to outlaw abortion as a result of this ruling, with one exception: New Mexico. As the sole outlier in the region, New Mexico is expected to become a haven for Texans seeking abortions. Friday’s ruling represents a victory nearly five decades in the making for Texas’ anti-abortion advocates, who have played an outsized role in the national effort to overturn Roe v. More than five decades ago, a woman identified in the legal filings as Jane Roe, later revealed to be Norma McCorvey, wanted an abortion. Paxton closed his state offices for the day, declaring he "making it an annual holiday—as a memorial to the 70 million lives lost bc of abortion." "All Americans deserve to live under a rule of law that respects their bodily autonomy and reproductive decisions." This represents one of the most significant judicial reversals in generations and is expected to have far-reaching consequences for all Texans. "The answer is that without further action by the Texas Legislature, abortion will soon be clearly illegal in Texas."
The Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on Friday, holding that there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion.
"For a half century, this Court has correctly recognized that the Constitution protects a woman's fundamental right to decide whether to end a pregnancy before viability," she argued. A panel of judges on the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the district court holding that in an "unbroken line dating to Roe v. conducted immediately after the leak of the draft opinion, Americans said, 66% to 34%, that they did not want the Supreme Court to completely overturn its decision. She urged the justices to uphold precedent and avoid a ruling that would disproportionally harm women who have come to depend upon the decision. A majority of the court in that case replaced Roe's framework with a new standard to determine the validity of laws restricting abortions. A district court blocked the law, holding that it is in direct violation of Supreme Court precedent legalizing abortion nationwide prior to viability, which can occur at around 23-24 weeks of pregnancy. "They have no basis in the Constitution. They have no home in our history or traditions. "The dissent is very candid that it cannot show that a constitutional right to abortion has any foundation, let alone a 'deeply rooted' one, 'in this Nation's history and tradition.'" Alito wrote. "It was three justices named by one president, Donald Trump, who were the core of today's decision to upend the scales of justice and eliminate a fundamental right for women in this country. The court's decision to do so will have real and immediate consequences," he said. The decision was reaffirmed in 1992, in Planned Parenthood v. Wade and eliminated the constitutional right to an abortion.
The ruling eliminating the constitutional right to an abortion after almost 50 years was met with celebration and anger across the country.
“The thing that I haven’t reconciled in my head is the majority of Americans did not want to see Roe v. “The impact on the real lives of real people will be devastating,” she said. In New Jersey, the Legislature codified a woman’s right to an abortion in the Democrat-led state early this year. A huge obstacle has been removed, and now we’re going to make sure that the law is used to protect the unborn.” “It’s very sad today for women, and it’s sad for families that are disadvantaged and lower income — this is going to affect a wide spectrum of people across the nation,” she said. The state senator representing her area was a lead sponsor of Arkansas’s “trigger law” that outlaws abortion following the court’s decision. “This decision deals a devastating blow to reproductive freedom in the United States. It will have an immediate and irreversible impact on the lives of people across the country. “It is a right that women have relied on, and are continuing to rely on,” Mr. Garland said. “My heart is breaking for all the generations of women and people and families that are going to be impacted so negatively by this by this decision.” “Our movement has been close to overturning Roe in the past, and have been let down at the last minute,” he said. “I will do all in my power to protect a women’s right in states where they will face the consequences of today’s decision,” Mr. Biden said. Still others cheered the decision, wearing matching red shirts that read “The Pro-Life Generation Votes” and rallying together in a separate group to commemorate the ruling.
Emotional advocates massed at the Supreme Court after it struck down Roe v. Wade, ending longstanding constitutional abortion protections.

The court's conservative majority took a sledgehammer to reproductive rights in America, formally voting down federal abortion protections.
Dissenting to the opinion, Breyer, Sotomayor and Kagan wrote that until now the "court struck a balance" between "values and goals" in order to safeguard a woman's life or health. In a shocking reversal of nearly 50 years of legal precedent, the conservative majority on the nation’s high court took a sledgehammer to reproductive rights in the United States, ending federal protections for abortion paving the way for states to outlaw the procedure. Democrats have blasted the anticipated decision, though they have been unable to do anything about it.

“I as attorney general will not join in any sort of prosecution of people seeking access to abortion care.” State Rep. Bryan Slaton, R-Royse City, quickly responded to Casar’s proposals on Twitter, saying, “We will not allow this in Texas.” “We must immediately direct public funds and private donations to help people get abortion care outside of Texas, beginning in one month,” Casar said in a statement. Greg Casar, the Democratic nominee for the 35th Congressional District, called for “immediate action.” Attorney General Ken Paxton declared on Twitter that abortion is “now illegal in Texas” and said he would be closing his office and “making it an annual holiday.” U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz said the reversal of Roe v. Wade and reinstated the right of states to protect innocent, unborn children.”

Texas is a pro-life state, and we have taken significant action to protect the sanctity of life. "And in renouncing this fundamental right, which it had repeatedly recognized and reaffirmed, the Court has upended the doctrine of stare decisis, a key pillar of the rule of law." Reaction of Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) to the Supreme Court's opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, June 24, 2022.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont will continue to advocate for our employees and our members’ right to obtain abortion care. The ruling in the case, Dobbs v. By abandoning five decades of legal precedent to repeal a cherished and fundamental right, the Supreme Court has betrayed the American people. Access to abortion will be protected in Vermont, and that protection will be enshrined in the Constitution by Vermont voters on November 8 with the passage of Prop 5. Wade. Every person should have the right to control their own health care decisions, including the right to abortion care. Leahy. In 2019, Act 47 created a statute that further protects unlimited, unregulated abortion through all nine months of pregnancy irrespective of the US Supreme Court decision in Dobbs. “In Vermont, a person’s right to choose is secure, and the City will continue its record of doing everything possible to defend reproductive access. Increasingly, it is clear, we must reform the way the U.S. Supreme Court is constituted to rebuild and restore its own legitimacy.” “The U.S. Supreme Court is quickly losing credibility in the eyes of many Americans. Our democracy depends on our ability to restore legitimacy to this essential branch of our government. “Additionally, in November, Vermonters will be able to further solidify this action with a constitutional amendment on the ballot. “Today will go down as a tragic day in the fight for human rights and women’s rights. Today’s opinion from a narrow majority of the Court is not the end of abortion.

"Okay, there's no justice and it's definitely not equal. "We need to restore the protections of Roe as law of the land. A Florida Constitution privacy provision originally complicated these in-state abortion restrictions. The WNBPA statement said an abortion ban "could lead to higher rates of maternal mortality while eviscerating rights to reproductive freedom for everyone." There are an infinite amount of reasons why a woman chooses to do what she does with her body or what they do with their body -- none of which are anybody else's business." We will continue to make our voices heard." The statement added: "Reproductive rights are human rights. "We therefore hold that the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Reichstadter also planted a flag on the bridge that reads: “Don’t tread on my uterus." Protests outside the Supreme Court on Friday have been peaceful so far, according to CNN correspondents on the scene. They knew it was coming, but for many of the women protesting in New York City on Friday afternoon and evening, some sitting and watching, others marching, prepared with scrawled-over t-shirts — “Bans off my body” — and an array of furious, witty and acerbic signs, the simple fact of it was almost too much to bear: Roe v. Mia Khatcherian, 32, felt a pang of guilt at her first reaction to the court’s decision: She was happy to live in New York state, where abortion is expected to remain a protected right under state law. The daughter of a Filipina mother and Armenian father, Khatcherian knew that people would be watching. A rising senior, Kaplan has yet to settle on a college, and is pondering which state to spend the next years of her life. “If they decide they don’t want it, I’d have to accept that they’re content with the constitutional arrangement we have now.” “That means, under the Walker Drygas Administration, women will continue to make their own choices regarding their reproductive healthcare.” Alaskans should have the opportunity to make their position clear as well.” “So the overturning of the federal protection of that right to privacy applying to abortion, does not immediately impact Alaska,” O’Hara-Jolley said. Also, HB 206 was one of the most extreme anti-abortion bills in the country, and it was in the Alaska state House.” “We know that they’re going to try to come against that because they already do,” O’Hara-Jolley said.
The U.S. Supreme Court in a June 24 decision upheld Mississippi's restrictions on abortion, a ruling that may lead employers to revise their employee health ...
"Address the disruptions by focusing on the disruption and not the point of view. "It is generally recommended that employers refrain from giving definitive answers on the impact of the decision on health insurance coverage for abortions," he explained. Certain states have trigger laws in place, which are laws that outlaw abortion and were designed to go into effect immediately with the overturning of Roe v. It is inevitable that there will be discussion about the decision among employees, Segal said. It’s going to be a rocky road as employers develop new policies that comply with various legal obligations that will be changing quickly.” "Employers will want to think about these issues and clearly document their travel expense payment policy," he said. While such an order likely would be challenged, state constitutions "may protect a woman's right to choose. An abortion restriction, the majority holds, is permissible whenever rational, the lowest level of scrutiny known to the law. And because, as the court has often stated, protecting fetal life is rational, states will feel free to enact all manner of restrictions," he predicted. In an opinion joined by four justices, Justice Samuel Alito Jr. said, "We hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled. Casey, 505 U. S. 833 (1992), have protected the liberty and equality of women. "Some of us out here may say we may never get an abortion, but it's the fact that it's an open access in case somebody needs it," Little said. The day started with a group of anti-abortion demonstrators and even included a fight between converging groups. "We just want to make our voices heard," said Rachel Smith, who attended the protest with a friend. "As a woman, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, I cannot believe we are here again," said Janet Ecksel, of Upper Southampton, standing in a Middletown parking lot. "We can do something; we just have to keep fighting." "Black women are oppressed people when you think of the hierarchy. The same ones that are so familiar to all of us — hurt, scared, furious." I am a don't-rock-the-boat kind of judge,” the justice told the senator in a discussion on Roe, according to notes from a meeting before his confirmation.
Ms. Collins noted that in her discussions with Justice Gorsuch, he assured her he had “written the book” on precedent, a treatise titled “The Law of Judicial Precedent.” “Throwing out a precedent overnight that the country has relied upon for half a century is not conservative,” she said in a statement. That was a point Justice Kavanaugh himself seemed to be making in his concurrence in the Dobbs case on Friday. “How about those justices coming before the senators and saying they respected stare decisis, which is the precedents of the court, that they respected the right of privacy in the Constitution of the United States?” she said. “I have no respect left for some of the justices when you consider what they told us in their confirmation hearings,” said Mr. Blumenthal, a former Supreme Court clerk. Ms. Collins won re-election in 2020 but has faced intense political backlash for her support of Justice Kavanaugh, and her critics say she allowed herself to be taken in by him because she was determined to vote for him. “I understand precedent and I understand the importance of overturning it.” Wade was settled legal precedent and I am alarmed they chose to reject the stability the ruling has provided for two generations of Americans,” said Mr. Manchin, who himself is anti-abortion. I believe in stability and in the Team of Nine.” His seeming turnabout in the case on Friday prompted Ms. Collins and another senator, Joe Manchin III of West Virginia, who gave Justice Kavanaugh crucial votes for his narrow confirmation to vent their anger, saying they felt their trust had been abused. Senators pepper the nominee with questions about stare decisis — the principle of standing by things that have been decided — and commitment to precedent. Persuaded, Ms. Collins, a Republican, gave a detailed speech a few weeks later laying out her rationale for backing the future justice that cited his stated commitment to precedent on Roe, helping clinch his confirmation after a bitter fight.
Soon after the supreme court struck down abortion protection, pro-choice demonstrators took to the streets.
Fielder was heading to the annual Trans March in the city’s Dolores Park where marchers shouted, “When our community is under attack, what do we do? Fuck the court and the legislature!” She added: “I have no faith that the supreme court is going to stop here. This is one of the most consequential decisions of the past 50 years … and we’re entering into a very dark era.” “We have to go to the streets and raise our voices, even in blue states where our rights are protected. In addition to the large demonstration outside the supreme court in Washington DC – where activists shouted, “This decision must not stand!

Austinites took to the streets Friday to protest Texas' abortion law and the end of Roe v. Wade, which protected the right to abortion for 50 years.

As thousands protested across the country, Herring joined at least 1,000 people Friday evening in downtown Austin to denounce the court’s decision. Wade brought back the traumatic memories of a late-term abortion she had in 2017.
The whole US system of patriarchal capitalism must indeed be aborted.
With the latest Supreme Court ruling, many women in the US will now not have that same privilege of relief. I abandoned the country after graduating from Columbia University in New York in 2003, and proceeded to pursue an internationally itinerant existence during which my healthcare and other needs were, as expected, attended to in a far more humane fashion than in my homeland. On June 24, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that legalised abortion nationwide.

Those states are Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Tennessee, Utah and Wyoming. We'll make sure we see them during that 10 days," Derzis said Friday during a news conference. "There were patients who said they were in their car and on their way and asked us, 'It will be OK, won't it?' And we had to tell them, 'No, we have to follow the law," Cathey told CNN. And it still hurts more than you ever thought." Black women accounted for the highest percentage of abortions by women seeking the procedure in the US in 2019, receiving 38.4% of all abortions performed, according to data collected "I want women in other states to see the swell of support -- that the sheer number (of demonstrators) sends a message," said Khatcherian, 32, the daughter of a Filipina mother and Armenian father.
The sensational 1972 “Bobigny trial” of Marie-Claire Chevalier for obtaining an illegal abortion helped decriminalize abortion in France just before Roe v.
Upon her death, President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte sent flowers to the funeral, a gesture confirming Marie-Claire’s critical role in advancing reproductive rights in France. Halimi died in 2020, just a few weeks before the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, arguably her close American counterpart. Rather than stick to the details of Marie-Claire’s case, Halimi chose to target the 1920 law that made a teenage rape victim a criminal, and in doing so turn her client’s misfortune into a groundbreaking legal precedent. On Halimi’s advice, she eventually enrolled in a remote boarding school to escape the media furor, yet discussion of the trial remained ubiquitous. (Her mother, Michèle, received only a symbolic fine that she never had to pay, and the abortionist a suspended one-year prison sentence.) That regulation followed a law from 1920, which, seeking to rebuild the population after the immense losses of the First World War, had banned all voluntary terminations and contraception in France. French women who illegally aborted (an estimated minimum of 300,000 of them every year) could expect punishment of up to two years in prison, and their abortionists up to a decade.
