As with Presley's musical legacy, Belew and Doucette's jumpsuit designs for the singer continue to hold a strong place in his fans' hearts. So, he packaged up the jumpsuits as part of a larger, epic stage experience that he delivered to audiences during the '70s," Goto said. Marchese added his go-to color was more specifically "an off-white" shade, which appeared white under stage lights as a pure white hue would have "blown Elvis out" and made him impossible to see. Harry Styles even auditioned to play Presley in Luhrmann's upcoming film and cited him as a direct influence on his gender-fluid wardrobe. Well into his 30s at this point, the singer would go on to champion a different kind of male sensuality, proving he was still capable of pushing boundaries. The iconic jumpsuit now sits in Presley's former home-turned-museum Graceland as a highlight of an exhibition titled "Elvis: Dressed to Rock," which features more than 100 pieces from the later stages of his career. Presley's jumpsuit wasn't his first challenge to the dominant fashion norms of the time, although his career started in the conservative mid-1950s. "He told Bill, 'I just want the suit to say America.' This was one of the few occasions when Elvis made a special request of his designer," Marchese said. Presley responded to Sinatra publicly at a press conference, saying: "If i remember correctly, [Sinatra] was also part of a trend. In the trailer, Butler can be seen cycling through a rainbow array of jumpsuits with his arms outstretched. As the Memphis singer crooned away on a stage in Honolulu, his concert "Aloha from Hawaii" was being simultaneously broadcast in 40 different countries. Presley wore a patriotic all-American outfit -- a rebel act against fashion norms of the time with its glamorous, gender-fluid take on menswear.

More Elvis Presley facts: he starred in 33 successful films, made history with his television appearances and specials, and knew great acclaim through his many, often record-breaking, live concert performances on tour and in Las Vegas. Globally, he has sold over one billion records, more than any other artist. Among his many achievements were 14 Grammy nominations (three wins) from the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award which he received at age 36, and his being named One of the 10 Outstanding Young Men of the Nation for 1970 by the United States Jaycees. Without any of the special privileges, his celebrity status might have afforded him, Elvis honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. “In 1954, Elvis began his singing career with the legendary Sun Records label in Memphis. In late 1955, his recording contract was sold to RCA Victor. By 1956, he was an international sensation. He was 42.” There were five songs that came up as the least favorite in the United States, all of which were the favorite in only one state each. His twin brother, Jessie Garon, was stillborn, leaving Elvis to grow up as an only child.

Review: Austin Butler, Baz Luhrmann deliver a grand 'Elvis' (ABC News)

Baz Luhrmann directs Austin Butler as Elvis Presley in the new musical drama from Warner Bros.

Luhrmann never does anything by half measures, but perhaps one of the most striking thinks about “Elvis” is how ultimately restrained it is in the end. Though the film is flimsy with biographical facts, it does make sure to put Elvis’s Mississippi and Beale Street influences front and center. The artifice of his performance fits in the context of Luhrmann’s theatrical storytelling. His entire Hollywood career is summed up in a quick montage that ends with Tom Hanks’ Colonel Tom Parker saying in voiceover that “we had a lot of fun.” It was, perhaps, always going to take a director as wild and visionary as Baz Luhrmann to do something that evokes the essence of the King’s 42 years. The brief life of Elvis Presley is not something that fits neatly into a conventional biopic formula, though many have tried.

'I couldn't be an imposter': How Austin Butler vanished into the role ... (USA TODAY)

In the new movie “Elvis,” Austin Butler blended raw talent with advice from singing and movement coaches to embody the king of rock and roll.

Butler listened to as much of the Elvis song catalog as he could. “That last day, I didn’t know who I was, and my body was dead at that point, too,” Butler says. “Every day, when I’d drive home from the set, I’d put on ‘Polk Salad Annie,’ ‘Never Been to Spain’ and ‘Milkcow Boogie Blues,’" he recalls. “What a revelation he is,” Luhrmann says of Butler. “From the moment he walked into our first meeting all the way to the end, he lived as Elvis. Not in the way a Method actor would. "It felt very claustrophobic, and I felt a great sadness because I’m sure Elvis felt the same way, that he could hardly breathe. Butler says he remembers as a youngster when his grandmother, who “was a teen in the ‘50s,” played Elvis songs. Helping him with that quest was the blessing of Priscilla Presley, whom the actor met early in the filmmaking process during a visit to her house on the Graceland property. I could only take shallow breaths and it was very hot," Butler observed in the film's production notes. I had to really experience him fully as he was then.” The actor wanted to tout Butler’s work ethic after the pair shared a Broadway stage in Eugene O'Neill's “The Iceman Cometh” in 2018. Each time the feeling struck, he knew the only cure was to get back to the alchemic task of turning into Elvis Presley. “I don’t think he had a day off, in years,” says Hanks, a two-time Oscar winner.

Presley never wrote a memoir. Nor did he keep a diary. His music could have been a window into his inner life, but he didn't even write his songs.

I read comic books, and I was the hero of the comic book. Luhrmann’s movie promises to reveal a great deal about one of the most captivating and enigmatic figures of our time. That was the extent of his professional obligations. I saw movies, and I was the hero in the movie. As Elvis crafted his identity and pursued his craft, he did the same. A few weeks before his demise, a Soviet publication described him as “wrecked” – a “pitilessly” dumped product victimized by the American consumerist system. Elvis alluded to this in 1971 when he provided a rare glimpse into his psyche upon receiving a Jaycees Award as one of the nation’s Ten Outstanding Young Men: Perhaps the most contentious aspect of his identity was the singer’s relationship to race. However, by 2021, in the midst of a changing racial climate, Jones was dismissing Presley as an unabashed racist. His music could have been a window into his inner life, but since he wasn’t a songwriter, his material depended on the words of others. Over the years, he had submitted to numerous interviews and press conferences, but the quality of these exchanges was erratic, frequently characterized by superficial answers to even shallower questions. Binder, an iconoclast unimpressed by Presley’s recent work, had pushed Elvis to reach back into his past to revitalize a career stalled by years of mediocre movies and soundtrack albums.

10 Actors Who Have Played Elvis On the Big & Small Screen (SheKnows)

Actors who played Elvis Presley — Austin Butler, Kurt Russell, and more actors who portrayed the iconic singer.

The film starts after Presley’s divorce from wife Priscilla, and follows his romance with young beauty pageant contestant Linda Thompson (Stephanie Zimbalist). Photo : Courtesy Everett Collection. 1988’s Heartbreak Hotel, directed by Chris Columbus (yes, the man who brought us the first two Harry Potter film adaptations), features a rather outlandish tale about the King of Rock and Roll. In the movie, David Keith plays the singer, who’s kidnapped by a group of kids. Photo : ©ABC/Courtesy Everett Collection. Although 2005’s Walk The Line tells the story of Johnny Cash, Elvis makes a small appearance. Photo : ©20thCentFox/Courtesy Everett Collection. Rose McGowan, pictured here, also starred as Ann-Margret, who had a rumored romance with Presley. Photo : Courtesy Everett Collection. Let’s start with the latest actor to recreate some of those famous dance moves: Austin Butler plays the titular role in Elvis, which follows the iconic singer from his early beginnings, his meteoric rise, to his tragic final years. Elvis, directed by Baz Luhrmann (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet), swivels into theaters on June 24, and already the film has earned its lead actor praise from Presley’s own family. Now, however, all eyes are on Austin Butler’s performance as Presley. Sure, you have lots of references from photos to videos, performances, and more — but when it really comes down to it, if an actor or actress can’t nail their impersonation, or anchor their interpretation in something familiar to the audience, the magic can be lost.

Watching 'Elvis' feels like being in a washing machine for 2 ½ hours (The Washington Post)

Austin Butler stars as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's mixed-up, muddled film portrait of the late singer.

It’s tempting to theorize that Luhrmann is temperamentally more attracted to Parker as a protagonist because he sees a fellow martinet, but the Colonel is really the lens through which the filmmaker is examining a broader theme: the freak show of fandom. He does his own singing during Presley’s formative years, and he does an admirable job of capturing the intoxication and terror of his nascent stardom. The narrative arc of “Elvis” often feels like it’s been lifted of a piece from Guillermo del Toro’s recent adaptation of “Nightmare Alley.” Parker, a carnival worker whose showmanship and talent for the short con earned him the nickname “The Snowman,” is portrayed as an Iago-like schemer who sees Presley as the ultimate geek, ripe for exploitation. Just as Parker took 50 percent of Presley’s earnings, he commandeers at least half the movie, butting into the story with glint-eyed asides and oppressive voice-overs. It’s a blunt, unsubtle but also thrilling scene whose momentum is oddly stopped cold by a cut to Presley — now portrayed by Austin Butler — performing at the Louisiana Hayride in 1954. During his formative years, young Elvis (Chaydon Jay) watches transfixed as African American patrons of a Tupelo juke joint writhe deliriously to Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup, then runs to a nearby Pentecostal revival tent where he’s just as mesmerized by the preaching of the word.

Her personal life was often troubled, and she struggled with substance abuse and opioid addiction off and on for years starting in 2008. They were together for 22 years, living together for 21 of those years and even welcomed a son named Navarone Garibaldi in 1987. Over her career as a singer-songwriter, she released three albums: To Whom It May Concern, Now What, and Storm & Grace. She is the mother of four children. Memphis Tourism officials hope the new "Elvis" movie will be a "billboard" for people around the world to come to visit Graceland and the Bluff City.

The TSA national throughput is the number of passengers traveling through the U.S. in a given time period. “In short, more people are traveling, and the planes are full,” Thomas said. Memphis and Elvis are synonymous, and it resonates very strongly through all of our research around the world ... It's (the new movie) just really a promotion for Memphis and kind of puts Memphis in front and center in people's minds.” For Memphis to thrive from a tourism standpoint and for Graceland to thrive, we need those international guests.” The movie is expected to be a summer blockbuster. Wigginton later declared it "international day" at the museum. So it's not a question of us, you know, trying to get something started, we never stopped as far as promoting Memphis to our international audiences.” Memphis Tourism CEO Kevin Kane said the organization kept the international representatives onboard throughout the pandemic. The TSA national throughput is down by 10.1% compared to May 2019, which means Memphis is outpacing the national average, Thomas said. “When we look at our numbers, we’re creeping back very close to pre-COVID levels for American visitors,” Weinshanker said. That was the most recent data provided by Memphis Tourism, the last full pre-pandemic year. International visitors to Memphis were a rarity for much of the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

'Elvis' Review: Shocking the King Back to Life (The New York Times)

Austin Butler plays the singer, with Tom Hanks as his devilish manager, in Baz Luhrmann's operatic, chaotic anti-biopic.

In the end, this isn’t a biopic or a horror movie or a cautionary parable: It’s a musical, and the music is great. But Luhrmann’s sense of history is too muddled and sentimental to give the gestures that kind of weight. An early montage — repeated so often that it becomes a motif — finds the boy Elvis (Chaydon Jay) simultaneously peeking into a juke joint where Arthur Crudup (Gary Clark Jr.) plays “That’s All Right Mama” and catching the spirit at a tent revival. Gladys is terrified, and the scene carries a heavy charge of sexualized danger. Luhrmann’s last feature was an exuberant, candy-colored — and, I thought, generally underrated — adaptation of “The Great Gatsby,” and the Colonel is in some ways a Gatsbyesque character. He’s a self-invented man, an arriviste on the American scene, a “mister nobody from nowhere” trading in the unstable currencies of wishing and seeming. Butler is fine in the few moments of offstage drama that the script allows, but most of the emotional action is telegraphed in Luhrmann’s usual emphatic, breathless style. The boy grows up poor in Tupelo, Miss., and Memphis, finds his way into the Sun Records recording studio at the age of 19, and proceeds to set the world on fire. As a movie, though, “Elvis” lurches and wobbles, caught in a trap only partly of its own devising. Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” — a biopic in the sense that “Heartbreak Hotel” is a Yelp review — works mightily to dispel this funerary gloom. (The composer and executive music producer is Elliott Wheeler.) The sonic message — and the film’s strongest argument for its subject’s relevance — is that Presley’s blend of blues, gospel, pop and country continues to mutate and pollinate in the musical present. The ghoulish, garish production design, by Catherine Martin (Luhrmann’s wife and longtime creative partner) and Karen Murphy, is full of carnival sleaze and Vegas vulgarity.

He blended the country music he grew up with and the sounds of Black gospel choirs and rhythm and blues music that is so deeply rooted in that Delta region. This story focused on the last relationship Elvis had, with former Miss Tennessee Linda Thompson. He also served his country in the U.S. Army. Presley was one of a kind and remains, even after death, a tremendous figure in pop culture. A music icon, a movie star, and a champion of the city he called home, Memphis. Presley ushered in a brand new era for American music by blending sounds of his musical influences from the region where he was raised.

Much of it is devoted to meticulously replicating Presley's performances, including a detailed presentation of his acclaimed 1968 NBC special, which gives Butler's unerring mimicry an opportunity to shine. Here, Luhrmann (who shares script credit with three others, nearly a decade after his last film "The Great Gatsby") makes the near-fatal error of primarily telling the story from Parker's point of view. A colorful and shadowy figure, Parker's control prompted allegations of serious financial shenanigans that were only exposed after Presley's death in 1977.

Elvis and Priscilla Presley's Relationship: A Look Back (PEOPLE.com)

Elvis and Priscilla Presley shared 13 years together before his untimely death in 1977. Here is a complete timeline of their relationship.

It was just too hard to believe," she said during an appearance on TODAY. "And going out the gates in the limo and seeing the streets lined up on both sides all the way to the cemetery. "When I came to L.A. for the first time, he was contracted for three movies a year. She recounted his words for the Orlando Sentinel, writing, "Cilla, I have to have time to think. Of which I did and then told me to open them and he presented me with a beautiful engagement ring." "He got on his knee with a gift behind his back and told me to close my eyes. "I locked myself in my room, unable to eat, unable to sleep," Priscilla said. "I saw Elvis trying to get my attention," Priscilla said. "For the next two weeks, we slept during the day and played at night," Priscilla recalled. "Finally I forced myself to go to school and found myself swamped by reporters and photographers." "I did not divorce him because I didn't love him ― he was the love of my life, truly," Priscilla told British talk show Loose Women. "If anything, I left because I needed to find out what the world was like." The entrepreneur first met the famous crooner in 1959 at just 14 years old while he was serving in the army overseas in Germany. "He was fun to be with," she told Good Morning America in June 2022. "It was a lot to expect someone my age to understand, but I tried.

'Not a good man': Elvis Presley's manager had shady past, link to ... (New York Post)

Elvis Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker — played by Tom Hanks in the new Baz Luhrmann movie "Elvis" — had an intense influence on the rock star and made ...

“He tried to make deals with the people there,” said Dickerson. And although Elvis had success with films such as 1957’s “Jailhouse Rock,” Dickerson believes that movies ultimately hurt Presley’s career — especially after he returned from a two-year stint in the Army in 1960. And after Elvis’ big comeback TV special in 1968, the following year Parker signed Presley to a long-term deal performing in Las Vegas that snuffed out his momentum — and his mojo. (Parker would get the honorary “Colonel” title in the Louisiana state militia for work that he did on the election campaign of Gov. Jimmie Davis, who was a former country singer.) It’s been estimated that the deal earned Parker $100 million. He didn’t listen to music.” But after Parker’s massive gambling debts had gotten him into big trouble in Las Vegas, he hiked his percentage up to 50 percent. Presley — who had dated the likes of Ann-Margret, Natalie Wood and Rita Moreno — was reluctant to wed the ingenue and settle down. Presley’s manager Colonel Tom Parker was so controlling, he pressured the rock star into marrying Priscilla Beaulieu on May 1, 1967. But the colorful, controversial Parker prevailed. But then Parker promptly cut Snow out of the deal to manage Presley. “They had a business arrangement that fell apart,” said Dickerson. “And Hank Snow said that Parker was the lowest human being that had ever walked the earth.” “He plotted and formed an association with Hank Snow,” said Dickerson. “He knew that Elvis’ mother loved Hank Snow. So he took Hank Snow with him to talk to the mother and father.”

Both Priscilla and Jerry said he was a lovely man." Marie Mott passed away in 1986 and in 1990, he got remarried to Loanne Miller, a tour secretary for RCA who he had known for the last 20 years. The Colonel himself would die 20 years later in 1997, but he was involved in managing Elvis's estate until he did. In fact, he played a heavy part in managing Elvis up until his death in 1977. Many have claimed that he took advantage of Elvis's dislike of dealing with business in order to get him to sign contracts that he knew Elvis wouldn't read. Parker's promotional skills must have been next level because he also helped singer-songwriter Jimmie Davis become the governor of Louisiana in 1944.

It's 2022. Does Elvis Presley still matter? (Los Angeles Times)

Baz Luhrmann's splashy “Elvis” biopic attempts to make the King relevant to a new generation. But 50 years after Presley's last Top 10 hit, is it too late?

Back then, CKX — a company whose biggest asset was “American Idol” — offloaded the estate to a private equity firm, believing it to be in a state of decline. His last Top 10 hit, “Burning Love,” arrived half a century ago, and his peak — and that of his pioneering ’50s rock ’n’ roll peers — is even further in the past. Sean Ross, editor of the “Ross on Radio” newsletter and an observer of radio trends, notes: “Oldies radio stations pushed away from the 1950s close to 20 years ago. For decades after Presley’s ignominious 1977 death — fates couldn’t conspire to deliver a less glamorous passing than dying on the toilet from a heart attack due to his addiction to pain pills — his legacy was kept alive through a steady stream of posthumous compilations, several of which were certified platinum over the years. Rather, it presents an idea of Elvis Presley, emphasizing how he shook up society by ignoring racial boundaries and sexual conventions, accentuating this rebellion not by relying on rock ’n’ roll — the wild, unkempt music that Presley made — but hip-hop and pop. “Elvis” can be seen as the culmination of a process that the two companies set in place roughly a decade ago. At this point,” says Ross, “classic hits stations have been living without Elvis since at least the mid-’10s.” Michael Stipe’s Elvis impression on R.E.M.’s “ Man on the Moon,” a tribute to comedian Andy Kaufman’s Presley parody, may have been the last time Presley registered as cool. Blessed with preternatural good looks, Elvis exuded such a palpable carnal charisma that his 1956 appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” caused a sensation because of his sexy gyrations; famously, the CBS censors insisted that the singer be shot from the waist up. It’s been 20 years since the compilation “ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits” topped the Billboard charts, aided by the JXL remix of “ A Little Less Conversation.” It’s also been 20 years since Eminem cracked that kids were “embarrassed their parents still listen to Elvis,” which itself seemed a little outdated at the time. The image of the young, rebellious, lascivious rockabilly cat would eventually give way to its “after picture”: the bloated ’70s crooner. The second half of the 20th century, for those who came of age during it, was in essence one giant Elvis moment.
