TENNIS LEGEND Serena Williams warms up for Wimbledon by competing in the doubles at the Rothesay International in Eastbourne today (21 June).

However, she is probably going to be sporting some kinesiology tape on her face during matches in order to fend off a sinus problem. The pair face a stiff task to get in synch for their 1st round encounter against the unseeded duo of Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo. As grass offers shorter rallies, and relies on an aggressive power game, then Williams appears to have made a wise choice to mark her reappearance.

Serena Williams is set to return at Eastbourne, where she will play doubles alongside Tunisian's new world No. 3 singles player Ons Jabeur.

I think a number of players will be super scared to play her. “It’s a long time not to play," 2021 Wimbledon finalist Karolina Pliskova said. “It’s still very different to just practicing." “Of course I don’t want to play against her. I hope the draw goes for another player, because of course no one wants to play against Serena and less on grass. “I think it surprised everyone," said Badosa in Eastbourne. “But it’s very good to have her back and it really amazed me how she had all this hunger for the game and still has it.

Aussie savagely snubbed for Serena (NEWS.com.au)

The tennis world is abuzz as Serena Williams' comeback draws closer, but one Aussie won't be as happy as the rest.

Now I’m not accepting to play doubles with anyone with less than 20 Grand Slams’.” Williams won the last of her seven Wimbledon singles titles in 2016 but reached the final in 2018 and 2019 after returning from having a baby. “Eastbourne has a unique charm that you don’t see anywhere else on tour and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans again.” “I am excited to return to the Rothesay International Eastbourne in England and to be back on the grass — a surface that has been so good to me throughout my career,” said Williams. The American superstar’s return however has left one Aussie out in the cold with Ellen Perez pushed aside in favour of the 23-time Grand Slam champion. Kalinina is good at attacking her opponents' second serve, so Sakkari definitely needs to put in an improved display on serve. Adjusting to the pace of Sakkari's shots on such a fast surface could take some time. Sakkari and Kalinina will be heading into this clash in contrasting grasscourt form. Her face-off with Bencic in Berlin was a classic that saw some fabulous shotmaking from both players. But she has gradually been gaining in confidence on the slick surface, as evident from her results this season. The Ukrainian, however, has struggled to find her feet on grass.

Kostyuk, Boulter lead raft of seeded upsets in Eastbourne (WTA Tennis)

The second round of the Rothesay International saw Marta Kostyuk upset No.7 seed Barbora Krejcikova, Katie Boulter oust No.4 seed Karolina Pliskova and ...

It was the start of a precipitous dip as her forehand and serve began to abandon her. How Boulter upset Pliskova: After a first set characterised by missed opportunities and 11 unforced errors, Boulter's chances of gaining the first Top 10 win of her career appeared slim. She also found more flair to convert her second match point by lofting a lob over Krejcikova's head. At 4-4 in the third set, perhaps the best game of the match also went Kostyuk's way after a multi-deuce tussle, as the Ukrainian found a marvellous pass to take her fifth break point of the game. However, for a set-and-a-half it was Krejcikova's more controlled play that had the upper hand. The Belgian, who will retire from singles competition after Wimbledon, took out compatriot and No.13 seed Elise Mertens 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 for her first Top 30 win since Moscow 2019.

Serena Williams wins in her return to tennis at Eastbourne (Los Angeles Times)

After a year of speculation about whether Serena Williams was planning to retire, the 23-time Grand Slam event winner wins in a doubles match at Eastbourne.

It would have been unbearably sad if her tearful exit from Wimbledon last year had been the last sight of her in a competitive match. “She’s not the youngest, and the body takes time to get back in the shape of playing matches and tournaments. Williams hasn’t won a Slam singles title since the Australian Open in 2017, when she was in the early stages of her pregnancy. “I hope the draw goes for another player because no one wants to play against Serena, and less on grass. The Wimbledon draw will take place Friday. “Of course I don’t want to play against her,” world No. 4 Paula Badosa said. But the new depth on the tour and her lack of recent competition will create significant obstacles. She came back because of the competitiveness that fueled her rise from the courts of Compton to the world stage, a determination that will be tested by opponents who are match-fit and sometimes two decades younger. And grass is a good surface for her, especially if she still has her powerful serve. Williams served to open the match Tuesday and produced some occasional glimpses of her fearsome old serve. Besides being the mother of 4½-year-old daughter, Olympia, she has a large endorsement portfolio and heads a venture capital firm called Serena Ventures, which launched an $111-million early stage fund this year to boost companies founded by women, Black and Latino entrepreneurs. Then-No. 2 Naomi Osaka has dropped to No. 42 after skipping several tournaments to tend to her mental health and after being hampered by a sore Achilles tendon. She became more comfortable as the match went on, moving better, going to the net with confidence and mixing in good volleys as she regained her touch.

WTA Eastbourne Day 4 Predictions including Ostapenko vs Keys (Last Word on Baseball)

Day 4 at WTA Eastbourne will see players reaching the quarterfinals. We share our predictions, including Jelena Ostapenko vs Madison Keys.

Ostapenko is more well-rounded, her serve isn’t as dominant but she is able to craft more points in rallies and using the low bounce to her advantage. Burrage is having a phenomenal grass court season. All indications are that this match could be similar, but, as always with Giorgi, you have to ride the wave with her game. “At last, we meet again!” It has been a whole two days since Flipkens beat Tomova in the final qualifying round at Eastbourne. However, the match couldn’t have been much closer, it was decided by a final set tiebreak that the veteran Belgian edged. We also predict the rest of the day’s matches in a separate article. Indeed, Tomova had break point in the final set at 5-5 that would’ve allowed her to serve for the match.
