The 122nd U.S. Open gets underway Thursday with the national championship taking place at one of the oldest golf courses in the United States.
The major championship record is poor, but take out his missed cuts at the PGA Championship and The Players Championship, and Cantlay has unbelievable this year. McIlroy has top 10s in three of his last four majors and three straight U.S. Opens. The fact that he hasn't captured one of these coveted championships since 2014 is obscene given some of the low rounds he's shot, but he finally seems to be back to form. This is the best Rory has played entering a major in quite a while, and he's even coming off a title defense at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy also seems to feel like he has the game of golf on his back given his staunch support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game. If he plays his game, he'll be in the mix, and we've already seen him this season hang with the big dogs with wins at The Players Championship and the Sentry Open plus top-five finishes at the Masters and the RSM Classic. Brookline is going to demand precisely what Smith can bring: a killer short game for its lightning-quick greens and precision off the tees for the numerous blind shots golfers will be making this week. J.T. is one of the three best iron players on the planet, and his hot putter has translated to wins and near wins for the last two months. He's playing the best golf of his career and has paired an ever-present confidence that nobody in the world is better than him with a wisdom that can only be attained with age and experience. The Olympian has pulled out of the 122nd U.S. Open citing health concerns. Four days of major championship golf on a menacing course in a terrific city. Behind them are Adam Scott, Max Homa and a 75% Jordan Spieth. For those of you not in the know, the three-time major winner is experiencing some tummy issues -- pro move not wearing white pants. Those two legends of the game make way for new ones as world No. 3 Rory McIlroy begin his quest for major No. 5 in the early hours of the first round. For all the nonsense that's happened this week, what better Day 1 story could there be than a lifelong journeyman whose son is serving as caddie leading after the first 18 holes?

(Though some golfers, such as 2016 U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, have special exemption for future events). Despite the PGA Tour's suspension of said golfers, each of the four majors — the other three being the Masters, PGA Championship and British Open — have autonomy in deciding who qualifies for their respective events. For instance, Rory McIlroy — winner of last week's RBC Canadian Open — took a shot at LIV head man Greg Norman while expressing disappointment in Mickelson, one of the tour's biggest names.

Plenty of PGA mainstays are also in Boston, led by Rory McIlroy, the 2011 U.S. Open champ, who has been outspoken in opposing LIV Golf. This time, he’s doing it with Saudi money. Men’s golf remains at the center of the sporting universe this week, as the world’s top players converge on the Country Club in Brookline, Mass. for the 122nd U.S. Open. After a tumultuous stretch that’s seen multiple star players defect from the PGA Tour in favor of the lucrative, Saudi-backed LIV Golf International Series, the USGA can only hope that the competition now seizes the spotlight.

That's going to play as basically a 100-yard shot for the pros, I think, and that's just ... *chef's kiss.* He has a solo second and a T8 at the first two major tournaments this year, and this course is a really nice setup for him. The 2022 U.S. Open will be available via streaming on Peacock with exclusive windows as well as featured groups. In what has been somewhat of a downturn of a season after last year’s best-in-class form, this is the perfect opportunity for Rahm to get back on track. He has bogeyed Nos. 1, 3 and now 4, with a par at No. 2. None of this is secret anymore — hell, two decades have passed — but in Boston, old habits die hard, and when one guy from the neighborhood tells a story about another guy from the neighborhood, it’s best not to blab. Curtis Strange won the last U.S. Open at The Country Club, which was held in 1988. Like Southern Hills, designer Gil Hanse has been working with The Country Club to prepare for this U.S. Open. The ball rams into the jar and Leonard takes off running. “See over there,” the caddie says, pointing to a spot on the green. Those are the stories in the annals. A Rory or JT or Speith or Rahm. I think they all have a good chance.

Yes, yes, the LIV Tour has been hanging around the run-up to the 122nd US Open at Brookline like a bad smell. The 33-year-old from Georgia has yet to finish in the top ten, but he did tie for low amateur in 2010 at Pebble Beach, and enjoyed his best result last year at Torrey Pines with a tie for 13th. But it’s hosted three previous US Opens, won by Curtis Strange in 1988, Julius Boros in 1963, and most famously of all, the amateur Francis Ouimet in 1913. But let’s not allow it to linger, for none of the players involved with the breakaway tour are considered particularly likely winners of the USGA’s flagship event. He taps in for a second birdie and becomes the first man to reach -2. Henley is quickly joined at the top by Collin Morikawa. The reigning Open champion could be very dangerous here this week, with approach play at a premium to Brookline’s often small and tightly guarded greens. The second miss was a particular shame, as he’d sent a delightful short iron into 4, using the right-to-left slope of the green to gather his ball to four feet. Never the most accurate from the tee, he’s yet to hit one, and as a result he’s dropped shots at 1, 3 and 4. He’ll need all his scrambling genius this week, and he demonstrates that, too, getting up and down from sand at the short par-four 5th to haul himself back to +2. Spieth’s combined score for last four opening rounds at the US Open is +18. He’ll need to go some to put a dent into that surprisingly awful record today. Well, that’s not quite accurate: a missed cut at the 2015 US Open at Chambers Bay, and that’s it for the 28-year-old South Carolinian. But he’s now a joint leader of this one. Not so the 2021 Masters champ Matsuyama, who followed birdie at 11 with a three-putt double bogey at 12. McIlroy’s paired with Xander Schauffele and Hideki Matsuyama. Schauffele – who has never finished lower than seventh in his five US Open appearances – has matched Rory shot for shot so far.
U.S. Open 2022 live updates: The latest news and analysis from our writers at the 122nd U.S. Open at Brookline.
6:48 a.m.: The action is officially underway at The Country Club! Michael Thorbjornsen, a 20-year-old amateur from Massachusetts teeing it up at Brookline (sound familiar?) had the honor of hitting the first tee shot off the first tee. What a great thrill for the 58-year-old. 8:03 a.m.: Hideki Matusyama sticks his tee shot at the par-3 11th hole, which is playing as the easiest hole on the course thus far, to grab a share of the lead. A tough early bogey from Spieth ... and just by the eye test, he doesn't look 100 percent post-stomach bug. Again, just like Spieth, people were down on Morikawa on the eve of the U.S. Open because he admitted to some reporters he was having trouble hitting a fade. Hopefully the Mighty Quinn's friends and family screenshotted that shot of the leaderboard while he was up there. And speaking of struggles, Hideki just double bogeyed the par-4 12th hole after that birdie at 11. 8:30 a.m.: Russell Henley is the first player to 2-under, birdieing the 10th and 12th holes early in his round. 9:14 p.m.: Maybe not the biggest name but qualifier Harry Hall with a beautiful shot on the par 3 11th just north of the hole. 8:40 a.m.: Henley has company at the top, as Collin Morikawa just rolled another nice birdie putt in at the fifth hole. Adam Scott doesn't put enough on it and the ball will find its way to the bottom of the steep eighth incline. Of course, the beauty of a U.S. Open are the never-ending storylines that its competitors present itself.
U.S. Open 2022: Rory McIlroy made a crucial, momentum-saving par at the par-4 fifth hole that he'll look back very fondly if he goes on to contend.
If the Northern Irishman goes onto contend at this U.S. Open, we will undoubtedly look back at this moment as one that saved his tournament. Turns out, that expletive paled in comparison to his reaction that would ensue. He let out an expletive when he arrived to find his lie.
Joel Dahmen has made it a foursome atop the U.S. Open leaderboard among the early starters at The Country Club.
Jon Rahm's defense of his U.S. Open title is off to a good start. He has never made the cut. That’s when he took two angry swings, sending sand flying. The 2011 U.S. Open champion drove into the lip of a bunker on the right side of the 310-yard, par-4 hole. David Lingmerth was also at 3 under, with a few holes to play. “If that doesn’t scream to you it’s the Open,” then nothing will, he said. A heck of a finish for Rahm, who struggled with his swing across the back nine. He had just saved par after an equally wild drive on No. 17. But during the round? He was 2 under when he reached the drivable par-4 fifth, but he blocked his drive right and ended up with a terrible lie – the ball in deep grass just above a bunker. He shot 3-under 67 to finish even with Callum Tarren and David Lingmerth with most of the morning rounds complete. Mickelson had a bogey from the fairway on the first hole and is 1 over through two holes.
Looking for a US Open live stream? Here's how to watch today's first round from Brookline online and from anywhere.
1 Although that said, you can cancel at any time, so there's really no reason not to give it a try. A premium subscription is also available for $35 AUD per month, but this merely gives you the ability to access three simultaneous streams, rather than two. The block of TSN channels will be all Canadian golf fans need to get a US Open 2022 live stream. Alternatively, you could go for the entire Sky Sports package (opens in new tab) starting from £43 per month. Sling TV (opens in new tab) offers two packages, both of which cost $35 a month. However, there's a third streaming option and this might be the best of them all — because Peacock (opens in new tab) is available for a super-low price. Plus, right now Sling is offering $10 off the first month (opens in new tab). For instance if you're in the U.K. and want to view a U.S. service, you'd select U.S. from the list. They're totally legal, inexpensive and easy to use. Either way, you'll want to watch it all live online, wherever you are. The field is split between those who have taken the big money on offer there — including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and 2020 US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau — and those who have stayed loyal to the PGA tour.
Rory McIlroy signed for a three-under-par 67 to share the clubhouse lead on the first day of the US Open at Brookline.
“They were like a hole or hole and a half behind the group in front of them. Luckily there was somebody in Canada who went to the airport and gave the airport staff a little kick, and they arrived on Sunday at 2pm. “The margins are just so fine in this tournament and I think you can see that out there with some of the reactions.” On day one at the Country Club there were flashes of McIlroy brilliance and flashes of McIlroy frustration. “You feel like you’re right in the tournament from the start of the week, which is nice,” said the four-time major winner. There is precious little that could switch the discussion around golf from matters of Saudi Arabia, a rebel tour and the resulting grisly civil war.
Callum Tarren, of England, reacts after a putt on the ninth hole during the first round of the U.S. Open golf tournament at The Country Club, Thursday, ...
David Lingmerth and Monday qualifier Joel Dahmen also shot 67 to tie for the early 18-hole lead. “But to have a finish like that just tops the round off.” So that was a nightmare." He was still 1 over through 13 before birdies on the fifth and seventh holes put him in the red. Pars are good,’ and I made a lot of pars,” he said. He sank a 4 1/2 foot putt for eagle.
Joel Dahmen has made it a foursome atop the U.S. Open leaderboard among the early starters at The Country Club.
He was replaced in the field by Patton Kizzire, who tees off in the afternoon. Jon Rahm’s defense of his U.S. Open title is off to a good start. He has never made the cut. The 2011 U.S. Open champion drove into the lip of a bunker on the right side of the 310-yard, par-4 hole. David Lingmerth was also at 3 under, with a few holes to play. “If that doesn’t scream to you it’s the Open,” then nothing will, he said. Mickelson had a bogey from the fairway on the first hole and is 1 over through two holes. He played last week for the first time in four months, and there appears to be plenty of rust still in his game.
Rory McIlroy found himself in a spot of bother on the fifth hole at The Country Club during the first round of the 122nd U.S. Open in Brookline, ...
I gave the sand a couple of whacks because I’d already messed it up so it wasn’t like it was much more work for Harry, and then I just reset and played a decent bunker shot, and then it was really nice to hole that putt.” “So I was sort of cursing the USGA whenever I was going up to the ball, and then yeah, but it’s one of those things it happens here, it doesn’t really happen anywhere else. Apparently, getting his anger out did the trick because McIlroy exploded his next shot 15 feet past the hole and sank the par putt. McIlroy was forced to take a whack at it while standing in the bunker. He would finish at 3 under, tied for the clubhouse lead. All he was trying to do was take his medicine and pitch it out back to the fairway.
Keith Greene is near the bottom of the U.S. Open leaderboard. But the 29-year-old mini-tour pro is still riding high.
Greene is not oblivious to where his name is on the leaderboard, and he is a prideful soul. Most of the range was empty. The men in green had dispersed. Greene is also a competitor, and there was a tournament to be played. Greene did admit to being slightly thrown off by the scene here at The Country Club, only because he’s never played in front of tens of thousands of people before. It also shows the other things I want to do I can do. “It’s the U.S. Open. Things are going to go wrong. Of course, a Friday tee time remains, a chance to add an extra two days to this dream. A group of Florida buddies, the aforementioned men in green, followed him here to Massachusetts, and he has tried to soak up this week for all that it is. But he endured, sensing there were places he had the ability to go and believing his sense of direction was true. BROOKLINE, Mass. — He had earned the right to be sullen, to be detached, to find a punching bag and unleash the fury that this course unleashed on him. Proving himself first at local qualifying, Greene turned in a 70-68 at the final stage—two shots better than Rickie Fowler, who has a runner-up at this event—to earn one of the four spots up for grabs at Admiral’s Cove.

I am 100% sure I saw the two kids that stole it." "I recognized the two kids that were running the opposite way with a smile on their face. As he began heading over to the area, Rahm saw two youngsters pick up the ball and run away with it.
Jon Rahm turned a pair of potential disasters into a par-birdie finish and an opening 69 in his title defense.

The first day of the US Open starts, the toughest test in golf from Brookline Country Club.
If you want to see what every hole looks like, I recommend watching the video below... Diamond was absent last week at the RBC Canadian Open as he and his wife welcomed the arrival of their second child. For someone who is so good a lot of the time, Patrick Cantlay's Major record is pedestrian to say the least. Measuring at just 315 yards and downwind, this hole will see a lot of birdies today I think. After chopping it down the par-4 13th, Rory makes an excellent seven-foot putt for par to stay at level. A slight cut and he has 10 feet or so to get to one-under. Homa made his birdie putt by the way on the 6th and he is also to one-under. Amateur Travis Vick just missed a short birdie putt to do the same. Unfortunately I didn't see it because Sky wanted to take us down to the driving range instead... Great to see Rory start well again, just like he did at Southern Hills last month. Great to see him starting well after four consecutive Major missed cuts. England's Callum Tarren gets into the red thanks to a birdie at the 16th.
At the third major of the year, the hottest fashioned trend is the bold-patterned shirt. There are also few Massachusetts-themed accents.
Brooks Koepka, and other Nike-sponsored players, honored that with the crustacean on his shoes. At the third major of the year, the hottest trend is the bold-patterned shirt. It's a big sports weekend in the Boston area. Rory McIlroy finished his round with a share of the lead while rocking a floral print shirt. That includes Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson. Scottie Scheffler is trying to become the seventh different player to win the Masters and U.S. Open in the same calendar year. The 2022 U.S. Open is underway at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts. Reigning champ Jon Rahm is trying to defend his title.

T42. Joaquin Niemann, Sam Burns, Bryson DeChambeau, Corey Conners and eight others (+1): After an eagle on the par-5 eighth, it appeared that Niemann would threaten the first page of the leaderboard as he stood at 2 under for the day. It felt as if he was all over the place Thursday as he carded four birdies to offset four bogeys. In his five U.S. Open appearances, he has five top-10 finishes; however, he has yet to truly contend as his average deficit entering the final round has been 5.4 strokes. While Young was in a similar spot as Spieth from a statistical standpoint, Cantlay was not as his iron play was simply dreadful. Having been in the final pairing at the 2022 PGA Championship, it is possible the heartache from Southern Hills leads to jubilation in Brookline. He has been knocking on the door for what seems like an eternity and on paper the 2022 version of Fitzpatrick is different. He will need this area of the bag to rebound as he has had some trouble backing up one great round with another. Leading the field in strokes gained tee to green, there is still room for improvement as the 34-year-old ranked 60th in strokes gained putting in Round 1. The Canadian is in the midst of a sneaky strong season, which at one point included three consecutive top-10 finishes but has yet to taste contention in a major championship. He continued his fine play Thursday at The Country Club, but it was not without some head scratching moments. Defending champion Jon Rahm, PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and two-time major title-holder Collin Morikawa are all only three strokes back at 1 under, and they will look to ascend up the leaderboard in Friday's second round. Dropping a shot late in his round, McIlroy would later be matched by by Joel Dahmen, MJ Daffue and a pair of European counterparts at 3 under.

He couldn't save par on that one and had to accept a 67 — not a bad start, and no apologies for his few outbursts of emotion. But now it's time for golf, and there a vibe of relief that focus could turn to a U.S. Open that first came to Brookline more than a century ago. No other major is more open — roughly half the 156-man field has to qualify — and it showed. For McIlroy, it was his second straight major — and third time in his last four U.S. Opens — he opened with a score under par. Even with a good start, and coming off a victory last week in the Canadian Open, it doesn't figure to be easy for McIlroy or anyone else. He hit that into another bunker, and then twice slammed the club into the sand out of frustration. “It's hard not to get frustrated because I'm walking up there going, ‘Just come back into the bunker.' The thickest rough on the course is around the edges of the bunker. His previous low score in a major was 68 on three occasions, most recently the first round of the 2020 PGA Championship at Harding Park. “You're going to encounter things at a U.S. Open, whether they be lies or stuff like that, that you just don't really encounter any other week,” he said. Thursday was a reminder he's pretty good at his day job, too. But yeah, in certain instances it definitely felt a little more relaxed than last week.” There is confidence in his game for winning last week in Toronto, and there is passion rare for a Thursday unless the game is going badly.
On Thursday at U.S. Open, many golf fans didn't seem to care much about Phil Mickelson filling his bank account at LIV Golf.
"It's blood money," one fan said just before the gallery erupted. I would've done the same thing," one fan was overheard saying at the range. We followed Phil Mickelson Thursday at the US Open and just listened. The reaction? Without getting into too much detail, he's somewhat become the poster child for the Saudi-backed, Greg Norman-led, breakaway league. "Who cares?

PGA Tour loyalists golfed alongside tour defectors for the first time, and for Phil Mickelson, LIV Golf's highest-paid star, it was business as usual down ...
BROOKLINE, Mass. — All it took was about two cringeworthy minutes and four putts from 12 feet to bring the golf world back to this: No matter where he plays ...
Mickelson is only 13 months removed from a remarkable late-career surge — the PGA Championship he won last year at Kiawah Island at a record age of 50. When he mercifully tapped in for his double-bogey 5, he was 5 over with the meat of the golf course still ahead. It was right out of a Boston fan's playbook. This marked the sixth straight time he’s failed to break par in the opening round of the U.S. Open. Earlier, Mickelson had missed par saves from 7 feet on No. 1 and 8 feet on No. 3. The quiet buzz spilling out of the grandstand and luxury suites grew louder as Happy Hour approached. And the next. Asked his brother and caddie, Tim, to take a look at the comebacker. He stopped and stared. He turned 52 on Thursday. He finished the day tied for 144th in the 156-player field. He shot 8-over 78.
Phil Mickelson struggled in the first round of the U.S. Open, carding an 8-over 78. He's tied for 144th place.
Mickelson was playing in the U.S. Open after being indefinitely suspended by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan a week ago. Mickelson has been runner-up at the U.S. Open a record six times. "I really enjoyed the test; I think it's just a spectacular golf course," Mickelson told reporters in the players' parking lot after the round. But then Mickelson yanked his tee shot into the thick rough on the right side on No. 12, needed two shots to get back to the fairway and carded a double-bogey 6 to drop to 7 over. Mickelson was one of 17 tour players who competed in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series event in London without a conflicting-event release. Playing for the first time in the U.S. since missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January, Mickelson had bogeys on three of the first five holes and then four-putted from 12 feet for a double bogey on the par-3 sixth.
Also, might we be headed to a PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf showdown this weekend?
Homa has been adamant about how much he's learned about not having to be perfect at major championships, and it's clear from his play at the last few that it's leading to better play on the golf course. The 15 golfers that are playing in the rival league to the PGA Tour shot 53 over with only D.J. and U.S. Amateur champion James Piot under par. 9. Max Homa's ball-striking: The best iron player in the field on Thursday was Homa, who gained over four strokes on approach shots and only got a 1-under 69 out of it. Fitzpatrick is having the best statistical season of his life, and while a bookend win at Brookline would be almost too on the nose, it would also be a terrific story. The other subplot here is that D.J. has not spoken publicly at a non-LIV event, but if he leads or is near the top on Friday and beyond, he's going to get a lot of questions about how much he's changed the landscape of his sport. A showdown between D.J. and either Rory or J.T. -- both firmly entrenched on the PGA Tour side -- is almost too delicious to consider this early in the week. "I played a lot of golf last week and a lot of holes to try to be able to trust it. 3. Callum Tarren oddity: One extremely strange part about Thursday is that Tarren, T2 after 18 holes, was over par for 12 of his first 15 holes and only under par for the last three of the day when he went birdie-eagle-par to close. Second, Morikawa has said all week he's unable to hit a fade at the moment, which over the last three years has been the most reliable shot in all of golf. And his quote about how he was going to spend his Thursday night sitting on the lead was even better: "I'm going to call him a newly best friend, Ben Rector; he is a musician. At the PGA in May, he was the horse who stayed in the peloton the entire way before closing like the thoroughbred he's proved himself to be. On Sunday, we might be talking about Thomas being the first golfer in the last seven years (Jordan Spieth in 2015) to win back to back major championships.

I think because of that, I’m a bit more at ease.” The group stood thick and populous beneath Hadwin’s 66 even though it lost Fitzpatrick, the hip pick of cognoscenti, when he bogeyed No. 18. Do you take the players known only to golf eggheads and ranked 592nd, 445th, 296th, 130th or 105th?

Mickelson and Johnson were among 13 players at the U.S. Open who participated in the Saudi-funded LIV Golf circuit last week. Seven of the top 13 came through qualifiers. He had just one birdie in the first round against five bogeys and two double bogeys. "I think in the past I may have played too cautiously because it was a U.S. Open and said, 'I need to hit it up here and do that.' Today, I treated it like every other tournament. Only 25 players out of the 156-man field finished below par in the first round at Brookline, which featured moderate wind and lots of cloud coverage. Thursday's first round at the U.S. Open, however, returned the focus to the action on the course and away from the rivalry between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf that has dominated headlines in recent weeks.

His previous low score in a major was 68 on three occasions, most recently the first round of the 2020 PGA Championship at Harding Park. Even with a good start, it doesn't figure to be easy for Hadwin or anyone else. "Nice to get down here and a couple of days' rest and get going for this week," Hadwin said.
A wild turkey flapped its wings near Phil Mickelson's ball. Yes, this actually happened deep in the trees on the 12th hole at the U.S. Open, the perfect ...
His wayward tee shot on the 12th might ultimately book him a flight home after Friday’s second round. Mickelson hadn’t played competitive golf on American soil since late January, and after he skipped the Masters, declined to defend the PGA Championship he had stunningly won in 2021, and played poorly last week in his LIV Golf debut outside of London, nobody expected much out of the six-time U.S. Open runner-up. A couple of fans shouted gambling references at him in the middle of his round, but they were tame. After making his first and only birdie at the 131-yard 11th, Lefty heard chants of “Philly…Philly” before one fan shouted at him, “You’re my idol. On his 52nd birthday, Mickelson endured an opening round Thursday that was painfully short on birdies, and an experience that was, you know, for the birds. Mickelson made a double-bogey six on his way to an 8-over 78, leaving him behind 13 amateurs and near the very bottom of the 156-man field.

“If that doesn’t scream to you it’s the Open,” then nothing will, he said. He took his drop and left himself a 12-foot birdie putt to finish with a 69. “But I’ll take the 4 and run any day of the week.” But he got up and down from the sand, making a 13-footer to save par. “Even though I’m standing up here slightly frustrated that I bogeyed the last, it’s a great start to the tournament,” he said. Johnson shot 68 to sit in a seven-way tie for seventh after 18 holes. In his attempt to win a major for the third straight year, Collin Morikawa made the turn at 3 under but didn’t make another birdie. He missed the ninth green -- his 18th hole -- and settled for his only bogey of the round. Defending U.S. Open champion John Rahm also salvaged a 69 after driving wide left on the last two holes. But the best thing he can do for the legacy circuit is to keep winning. The other was four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, who slammed and tossed aside his clubs during the round but also made enough shots with them to remain just one stroke off the lead. McIlroy was tied for second with Callum Tarren, David Lingmerth, Joel Dahmen and MJ Daffue.

Phil Mickelson would qualify as controversial in every conceivable way, even before he took on the PGA Tour and defected to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.
Then, he'll get a week off before heading to Pumpkin Ridge in Portland for the first U.S.-based LIV event at the end of the month. Curry's articulate thoughts on the Phil-to-LIV matter were quite the juxaposition with the next catcaller, who was positioned in one of the hospitality tents off 14 fairway and was clearly overserved. "The tour that was so incredibly good to him for 20-plus years, and he's completely tainted his legacy. His final score of eight-over 78 has him positioned in a tie for 144th, 12 shots off the lead of Adam Hadwin and just five shots shy of dead last. The tour would have taken care of him if he was really in that dire need." Phil's the one who is trying to take down the PGA Tour." "I thought he'd get booed out of the place, to be honest with you." Then, somewhat stunningly, came a real, live "boooo" in Mickelson's direction as he strolled to the par-3 sixth tee. Then again, this was the man's 52nd birthday, and this is the U.S. Open, which has caused him the most pain over the course of his three-decade career. Once they quieted, boo-er No. 2 let Mickelson know he was "dead to him." For the last 20 years and then some, he has been among the most beloved players in the sport. His Kiawah like pre-shot process was yielding Centurion-like results, but the Bostonians still opted for a positive-vibes-only approach.

On Friday those windows are 6:45-9:30 a.m., and again after 7 p.m. He's started his round double bogey, bogey to drop to 1-over, leaving valuable strokes all over the greens. Woo buddy, that would have been one hell of a clubhouse bar tab. That's 217 yardage on the tee sheet, maybe closer to 230 in the wind, and Burns hit it to within six inches. Mickelson enjoyed a cordial welcome at Brookline. Matt Fitzpatrick returned to the site of his 2013 U.S. Amateur victory and posted a solid 2-under, sitting two strokes back. Daffue is originally from South Africa. When he was a youth, his career appeared predestined. It's amazing, and still relevant as the current U.S. Open leader — by three strokes! It also hosted the 2013 U.S. Amateur which saw Matt Fitzpatrick win that event. Curtis Strange won the last U.S. Open at The Country Club, which was held in 1988. U.S. Open leader MJ Daffue has gone out in a 32, taking a three-stroke lead over the field. Like Southern Hills, designer Gil Hanse has been working with The Country Club to prepare for this U.S. Open.

Adam Hadwin leads after his opening round of 66 … but the likes of Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Adam Scott, Will Zalatoris, Justin Thomas, Gary Woodland and defending champ Jon Rahm are in hot pursuit. Four of the other five first-round leaders are also qualifiers, the exception being Rory McIlroy. Very strange. Sam Burns is a three-time winner on the PGA Tour this season, and in terms of recent form alone, might be the next cab on the rank to break his major duck. A drive down the middle of 10. He’s +1. And from long to big: MJ Daffue finds greenside sand at the drivable par-four 5th, splashes out to four feet, and makes it consecutive birdies. But he putts anyway and sends a right-to-left monster into the cup! ... so perhaps Adam Hadwin’s street-fighting par on 10 was the harbinger of a scrappy day. His third bird of the day, and he suddenly becomes a serious part of the conversation at -2. That leaves a tricky downhill pitch, which he sends way past the hole, his ball perhaps one revolution away from toppling off the false front and many yards down the fairway. We’ve all been there all right, and Scheffler’s amateur aberration costs him a shot. Two bogeys in the first three holes for the 34-year-old Canadian, and it could so easily have been three from three. Viktor Hovland trundles a long birdie putt 15 feet past on 15, but rolls in the one coming back.
The opening round had Phil drama, club tosses and turkeys. What's ahead during the second round of the U.S. Open? We've got it covered.
He followed that with a bogey at the 11th and another at the 14th. Dustin Johnson (2 under) and James Piot (1 under) were the only ones among the group to break 70. Without a low score Friday, he is in danger of missing the cut. Two years ago, he made $5,750 on the All Pro Tour. He is also a volunteer assistant coach at Houston. But after making the turn at 6-under on Friday, MJ Daffue (pronounced "Duffey") has a lead over the likes of Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick and three others. Daffue, 33, was born in South Africa and played at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He has already earned his PGA Tour card for 2022-23 through his good play on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he is fourth in the The 25. He qualified for his first major championship by sharing medalist honors at a qualifier in Springfield, Ohio, and is making the most of it so far. The 15 LIV players put up a cumulative total Thursday of 53 over. The current leader of the 122nd U.S. Open has 822 (and counting) followers on Twitter as of Friday morning. McIlroy held the lead for most of Thursday afternoon and is looking for his fifth major title. OK. Wild turkeys on the course? Canadian Hadwin, a surprise early frontrunner, was the only player to shoot 66 on Thursday, but McIlroy will be kicking himself after a bogey at the last put him on 67.

Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris and Max Homa all turned in rounds of 1-under 69 on Thursday and are firmly in the mix.
Masters champion and top-ranked Scottie Scheffler shot 3-under 67 to join Rory McIlroy and four others in the lead at the U.S. Open.
___ It doesn't seem that way to MJ Daffue (pronounced “Duffy”). M.J. Daffue had a perfect lie. ___ Then Koepka knocked in a 14-foot putt. ___
A potentially rowdy Friday might be a little more subdued in the Boston area given what happened in Game 6 of the NBA Finals on Thursday night.
The morning wave features some rather large names to need to make a move in order to have a serious shot on the weekend. And then there is Rory McIlroy, also among the three-under crew thanks to his second straight strong start in a major championship. Having said that, the top of the leader board is a bit lacking in star power, though we know it's way too early to start talking like that.
Daffue's wayward drive settled on the deck of a hospitality area that runs down the left side of the hole. And in a move that would undoubtedly make Phil ...
And put that shot at the top of his bio. Unfortunately, Daffue left his next chip in the rough and then wound up missing a six-footer for par. We've seen similar shots from Phil and others through the years, but what sets this one apart was the degree of difficulty, in large part because a large tree poking through the crowded area that made Daffue keep his 3-wood down.
