What The Word 'Grocery' Originally Meant (Tasting Table)

General stores were also called mercantiles, emporiums, or village shops, per Wonderopolis, and they sold everything from food, clothing, and household goods to ...

According to the Living History of Illinois and Chicago, what currently comes to mind when you think of a grocery store used to be called a "general store." In fact, the number-one grocer in the U.S. in 2021 was Walmart, according to ScrapeHero. A 2016 article by The Wall Street Journal reports that high-dollar grocery stores nationwide were starting to construct wine bars and beer gardens in their stores to encourage shoppers to prolong their grocery run and spend more money. In fact, the word "grocery" itself used to mean something totally different. By the 1800s, a grocer selling coffee, tea, sugar, and other staple food items could also apply for a liquor license, thereby transitioning the word "grocery" for a time toward the barroom. But, after a long hiatus, in-store grocery shopping is back on the rise – and it turns out the American "grocery" has enjoyed a much more labyrinthian history than just the transition from pushing a clanging metal shopping cart to pressing an "add to cart" button.

Written in Granite: The word on the birds (Lowell Sun)

When it's daytime, birds sound beautiful but not when trying to sleep during the wee hours. Speaking of birds, you can own backyard chickens in Nashua. I was ...

The way I understand it, Gate City residents are allowed to own backyard chickens if they have a minimum of 10 square feet of space each. During mating season, male mockingbirds commonly sing in the middle of the night to attract a mate and “broadcast” territorial boundaries. Southern New Hampshire is home to a large variety of birds, and I’m certainly no expert but believe the species serenading my neighbors over and over again rather annoyingly was a northern mockingbird. I turned up the volume on my “ocean waves crashing and Tibetan singing bowls” tape that I often listen to for relaxing my body, mind and spirit. A bird decided to sing loudly without pause for the neighborhood. At about 3 a.m., I was awakened by a heavy, steady noise coming from a 20-ton vehicle.

Dorky left just one possible correct answer and I didn’t get it until the sixth and final guess with donor. Dorky really should have been my last guess before getting the solution. From here, tough brought the total remaining possibilities down to just four, though again the Wordle Bot informs me that windy would have been better. Small fires prevent big fires, but now—with the drought especially—there is no such thing as a small fire (only controlled burns). Roles narrowed that down to 12, however, which was good, even though Wordle Bot says I should have guessed store instead. Yesterday, a wildfire started in the forest near my home.

The word morphed into the implication of taking one’s proper bearings mentally, in other words, to be focused. Thus, the word morphed in Latin with a derived meaning, and continues to mutate in the English language. The word came to be used in the sense to familiarize, initiate, or introduce. How to create a custom list style in a Microsoft Word document (TechRepublic)

Adding a numbered list to a Microsoft Word document is usually simple and quick, but it might not look the same on someone else's system.

Save the custom list style technique for complex numbered lists and templates and documents that you share with others. Remember, we create a custom numbered list style, so the style formats only the numbers. Figure E shows the custom list style applied. Word automatically adds your custom list style to the numbering list interface. If you build a custom list and it doesn’t show up in the gallery, check this filtering option to make sure the filter allows custom lists. For this exercise, choose the latter (the default), but you can add a custom list style to the underlying template, Normal. If you do so, Word might ask if you want to save changes made to Normal when you close the document. However, a custom list style will show up in the library if the document has one. Then you can access this custom list style from Word’s Multilevel List dropdown in the Paragraph group as you would a pre-built list style. That means that each item in your numbered list is a paragraph. You can’t create custom list styles in Word for the web. In this tutorial, I’ll show you a way around this problem by creating a custom list style. Adding a numbered list to a Microsoft Word document is usually simple and quick, but it might not look the same on someone else’s system.
