Zookeepers give advice on dealing with snakes this summer (WVLT.TV)

With the weather warming up, more people will be spending time outdoors, which can increase the risk of encountering wildlife or even them encountering you.

That is the only treatment to stop the venom and a hospital is the only place that would have that.” If it is venomous then it requires anti-venom. That way you can solve the problem all while keeping your distance.

Perdomo I’m still on the fence about, but I’m hoping that Steven is right and his bat is starting to come around. As the game started, some guy came to sit in my empty row with like 2 nachos, 4 hot dogs, 2 beers and 2 sodas; he was not getting up for a long time. Snake_Bitten: Herrera, Perdomo, and Thomas, have all had some moments on both defense and offense, but I’d have to say that Daulton Varsho is at the top of my watchlist. The fact that Thomas is only 22 and Varsho is 25 factors in here. Spencer: I’ve always loved Carson. I lived in Missouri when he was drafted, and I was over the moon to get him for Goldy. My hope is that he has used his downtime and Reno experience to find the bat we all know he has. - Defensively, I hope Carson Kelly returns as the primary catcher, moving Varsho to the outfield and continuing as a third catcher. Dano: Simply put, I hope he brought his bat with him from Reno, and that he can actually use it effectively as a major league catcher. Jack: My hope of course is that he can stay healthy, and reach his full potential over the next 2 ½ seasons before he becomes a free agent following the 2024 season. Wesley: I give him a 1% chance of sticking in the rotation. I hope that he will put those concerns to rest and become a real leader on this team. If Strom can fix him, or at least get him back to being a functional MLB pitcher, I’d expect that he sticks at least until some of the kids down on the farm are ready to try their luck in the big city. The result is that the Diamondbacks now have a former pedigree arm that Chicago is mostly paying for.

Blood-sucking, snake-like fish arrive in NB waterways to spawn ... (CBC.ca)

It's spawning season for the vampire-like sea lamprey. That means they're heading back to New Brunswick waterways to reproduce and die.

She said the males have a ridge along their back that "looks like a vein." Birceanu said Sherwood's video shows the males building the nest. "Very often in their native range in the Atlantic, the sea lamprey will be a true parasite. "You do have to break the seal. It shows how impossible it would be for a host fish to shake one off itself. For decades, the Great Lakes Fisher Commission has been working to get control over the lamprey population. They are even beneficial to fish such as salmon, by returning valuable nutrients to the environment when scores of them die after spawning. Gaden helps run the commission public awareness campaign, where he takes live sea lampreys on the road. The eggs develop into worm-like creatures that make their way to where they can burrow into the sandy bottom. This roughly two-month transformation even alters the way they breathe, so that they can continue to breathe while completely latched onto a host. These lamprey spend a good part of their life at sea, attached to, and feeding off the blood of, other fish. She said pheromones given off by the larvae from previous seasons that are still in the area help guide them.

Elijah Bustamante was bitten by a water moccasin and was treated with seven bags of antivenom in the ICU.

A lot of the doctors went on their phones and pulled up different ones and every time he picked out one it ended up being the water moccasin snake," Elijah's mother, Sanita Bustamante, told News4Jax. They are relatively unaggressive, with experiments done on wild specimens showing that of 45 wild moccasins, 51 percent tried to escape, while 28 of 36 (78 percent) displayed threat signals and were only likely to bite when picked up with a mechanical hand. Moccasins can be recognized from their distinctive large blocky heads with narrow necks.

Dams and salmon: Time to breach lower Snake River dams? Or is it ... (Idaho Statesman)

Forum on June 16 will tackle the question of whether to breach the four lower Snake River dams in an effort to save salmon runs in Idaho.

“These numbers are the clincher for me.” It’s ocean conditions that are the real problem,” he says. And he says fisheries biologists believe restoring wild salmon access to quality high elevation spawning habitat would reverse the loss of these fish runs. Likely even fewer fish than that will return as the impacts of climate change take their toll. The hourlong forum will begin at noon and be presented online through Zoom. Perhaps no other environmental issue has been more debated in the Northwest than this one.

As Sullivan notes we have solutions to replace the modest amount of hydro power produced by these dams. We don’t need lies such as the only way to replace small amounts of power from Snake River hydro is to burn additional mountains of fossil fuels. I’m writing in response to the recent commentary by Marc Sullivan regarding salmon and the Snake River dams (“ Don’t fall for TV ads’ climate case for Snake dams,” The Herald, June 5). Sullivan called out Northwest RiverPartners’ misinformation media blitz on Snake River hydro power.

We will have a more comprehensive look at the report over the next week, but the tone and approach of the report is consistent – driving a pre-set narrative that dam destruction is the only solution to salmon runs they say are “continuing to decline” when runs are actually increasing. Even the $27.2 billion figure, large as that is, is still lower than the $33.5 billion estimate from Congressman Simpson’s proposal to destroy the dams. Again, the implication is that Snake River returns are driving the results. Most basically, the report notes that the projected costs of replacing the functions of the four Lower Snake River (LSR) dams ranges from $10.3 billion to $27.2 billion, with some additional costs not accounted for. The report implies that destroying the dams would increase income to commercial fishers. This type of sleight of hand – implying something without evidence or substituting numbers from a different river – is a consistent pattern in the report.

In Our View: Snake River dams report leaves many questions (The Columbian)

A highly anticipated report about the possibility of breaching four hydroelectric dams along the lower Snake River appears to be all sound and fury ...

That is a reasonable position, and one that should be part of ongoing discussions about whether or not to remove the dams. One thing we all should be able to agree upon is that salmon-boosting strategies of the past several decades have been inadequate. Republican U.S. Reps. Dan Newhouse and Cathy McMorris Rodgers on Thursday introduced a bill to protect the dams, which are located in their districts. Given the issue’s importance to tribes, river users, upstream commerce, farmers and ranchers, there will be no shortage of opinions. A draft version announced Thursday said the benefits provided by the dams can be replaced. If a potential homebuyer were told that a house costs between $103,000 and $272,000, they likely would walk away without giving it a second thought; there’s too much ambiguity.

Citing conclusions in the 2020 Environmental Impact Statement, Rep. Herrera Beutler said it’s possible to balance the health of the region’s native fish runs while also protecting the clean, affordable hydropower and many economic benefits provided by these dams. “It was extremely clear during our tour of the Ice Harbor Dam and the Columbia and Snake Rivers last week with Representative Newhouse that hydropower must play a crucial role in our all of the above energy approach,” said Rep. Miller-Meeks. “I am proud to join in introducing this important legislation that will ensure that hydroelectric dams in the Columbia River system are able to continue providing energy and supporting the transportation, agriculture, and irrigation sectors that all Americans rely on.” “In the Pacific Northwest, not only do we depend on this critical infrastructure for clean, renewable, and affordable energy, but transportation for 60 percent of the nation’s wheat,” bill sponsor U.S. Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) said. Rep. Stauber noted that the dams in the Pacific Northwest are necessary for modern life, and breaching the FCRPS would set the region back centuries. “The science is crystal clear: breaching the four lower Snake River dams would be harmful to our communities, our environment, and our economy,” said Rep. Newhouse. “Amidst a national energy and supply chain crisis, it is unconscionable that dam-breaching advocates — including Governor Inslee and Senator Murray — repeatedly attempt to force a predetermined, unscientific conclusion that will put our communities who are already struggling at risk.” “This legislation utilizes the best available science to further ensure the lower Snake River dams continue to provide carbon-free, baseload energy while continuing to support fish recovery efforts,” he added.

Video: Kingsnake Eats Large Rattlesnake by “Folding” It Before ... (Field & Stream)

Tom Slagle of Haddock, Georgia, recently captured must-see footage of a kingsnake swallowing a rattler larger than itself.

Kingsnakes—which strike and grasp their prey near the head, coil around and constrict it before swallowing it headfirst—are even capable of out-squeezing larger constrictors, even though their muscles are no more powerful than the other snake’s. According to a 2017 study, this may be because a kingsnake will carefully align its body around prey like a spring coil rather than the more haphazard constricting methods used by other constrictors. These waves shorten the prey’s body axis and allow it to fit inside the gastrointestinal tract and body cavity of the predator.” In other words, kingsnakes fold larger snakes up like an accordion. The short clip, credited to Tom Slagle of Haddock, Georgia, shows a kingsnake chowing down on a timber rattler much larger than itself.

If I’m in a canoe, I’m always mentally ready for a snake to drop down, then to pick up the paddle and scoop it out,” she said. It will sit there for a second, and that’s your chance to get it out.” “If you have a non-venomous snake in your yard, you should probably keep it instead of killing it because it could actually be defending its territory against the snakes you don’t want to be there,” McPeake said. McPeake suggests carefully stepping on top of a log – after checking that there is not a snake resting atop it – and looking on the other side. Becky McPeake, extension wildlife specialist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, said that while seeing a snake in one’s yard can be frightening at first, non-venomous snakes can be an asset to homeowners.
