Le Mans 2022 from the drivers' seat: how to deal with traffic (CAR Magazine)

... ▻ Traffic is a key aspect of Le Mans ▻ And could be the difference between winning or losing ▻ Here's how Toyota driver Brendon Hartley sees it.

‘It’s actually a big problem when cars try to get out of the way because we’re coming with such a big difference in speed,’ Hartley reveals. ‘We flash the lights and you can be on the inside, they could leave you the space, they don’t take the apex there’s almost no time loss for them. ‘We’re passing sometimes 20 cars per lap, and you’re always weighing up that risk and reward; that’s where a lot of time can be won or lost, but also, a whole race can can end right there,’ Hartley says. With increased reliability and a faster pace, how you navigate through slower cars can win or lose you the race – and it’s become an area all top drivers need to learn. ‘A lot of the GT cars you get a feeling,’ Hartley reveals. Look at what the what the level of the driving is.’

The No. 22 United Autosports and No. 47 Algarve Pro Racing cars are of in the dirt on the start, with the No. 22 flying off screen through the gravel as the Hypercar smade their way through the first few corners. Toyota gets both of their cars through turn 1 together, with No. 8 leading No. 7, but both of the Glickenhaus cars pass the No. 36 Alpine before the first corner. Corvette Racing holds the entire front row in the final year of GTE Pro, a class with just seven cars this season. After the two other WRT cars suffered damage in an opening lap clash and one of them was assessed an additional penalty, the No. 32 WRT car is up to sixth. LMP2 is the biggest class in the race, boasting more than 25 cars. That would have been a battle for the lead. Both the gaps and order remain consistent near the top of the other three classes. The No. 708 Glickenhaus and No. 7 Toyota will both go 11 laps. The No. 709 Glickenhaus and sole Alpine LMP1 car are both following. Hour 00:45: After stopping a lap earlier, Toyota No. 7 now leads overall for the first time today. The No. 64, the car currently drien by Nick Tandy, leads that group. That remains a 1-2-3-4-5 for the 911 GT3 RSR.

Brendon Hartley has taken over the #8 Toyota while Jose Maria Lopez is now in the #7. In GTE Pro, the leading #92 Porsche pits and retains the lead. The #92 Porsche leads GTE Pro from the #51 AF Corse Ferrari. In GTE Am, the #79 Weathertech Racing Porsche holds a 55s margin over the #98 NorthWest AMR Aston Martin. In the Hypercar Toyota battle, Hartley currently leads aboard #8 by 17.9s over Lopez, who has clawed back nearly 10 seconds in the #7 after losing out in a slow zone on his outlap. Richard Westbrook has just been into the pits aboard the #709 Glickenhaus which remains comfortably in third. From second in LMP2, Kubica has just come into the pits which cycles Frijns ahead. A big spin for Richard Bradley in the Duqueine LMP2 car almost catches out the following Mathieu Vaxiviere in the Alpine Hypercar, the Frenchman leaping over the kerb and bouncing across a strip of gravel in avoidance. Behind him meanwhile, Sean Gelael is now aboard the #31 WRT car which has recovered so strongly to second from its early penalty but has Louis Deletraz closing on him in the #9 Prema car. Julien Canal is still finding his bearings in LMP2, having just been inserted into the Panis Racing ORECA that currently runs fourth. The bulk of that came when Lopez lost out in a slow zone on his outlap, the two cars having been almost welded together in the laps prior. All the while, Thomas Merrill is continuing serenely out front in the #79 WeatherTech Porsche, fulfilling his role as 'Super Bronze' to the tee. Here comes the #38 Jota car into the pits again from the LMP2 class lead.

The leading Glickenhaus continues to run in third place with Richard Westbrook driving the Pipo-engined #708 LMH, albeit four laps down on the two Toyotas after losing time in the pits for a change of rear wing. The #7 Toyota lost further time when Lopez brought the car into the pits at the end of the lap, leaving him more than a lap behind the sister car with eight hours remaining in the race. Lopez was holding a comfortable lead of 15 seconds when his Toyota GR010 crawled to a halt at Arnage, with Hartley passing him for the lead by the time the Argentine was able to perform a reset and get going again.

Toyota strengthens grip on 2022 24 Hours of Le Mans at the 9 hour mark after a spin for main Glickenhaus rival as Corvette forced to surrender huge GT.

The #63 car had led from the start and was well clear of the pack when it suffered a suspension failure. To its credit, Toyota has proven impenetrable out front with the two cars still circulating together and occasionally swapping the lead through the pit-stop cycle. Despite the quick turnaround by mechanics, it is now seven laps off the lead in 17th overall.

The United Autosport Oreca #22 was clipped by the WRT #31,sending the #22 car into the gravel. The WRT #31, which was being driven by Rene Rast, later got a one-minute stop-go penalty for its part in the situation. LMP2 was the stand-out class, with battles going on all along the grid. The Alpine Elf Team #36 had a nightmare of a stint. Topping LMP2 was still the JOTA #38 car. After pitting, the #92 was left bottom of the GTE Pro class. The car’s nearest competitor, the Prema Orlen #9 in second was a lap down, giving the JOTA plenty of breathing space. Brendon Hartley was able to take advantage and slip pass to take the lead. At one point, he was nearly two minutes ahead of second place. Jose Maria Lopez had a 15-second lead over the #8 Toyota but that was all thrown away when the #7 came stopped at Arnage. Heartbreak for Corvette, who looked on target to win. However, Corvette #64 had its race ruined while competing for first in class.

Le Mans 24h: Toyota takes fifth straight win as rivals falter (Motorsport.com, Edition: Global)

Toyota secured its fifth consecutive victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours as the #8 crew of Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa came out on top.

Corvette had swept the front row of the class and its cars looked to be the class of the seven-car Pro field on sheer pace, with Porsche its nearest challenger and Ferrari struggling to hang on to the coat-tails of its two rivals. A crash for the #31 WRT entry of Robin Frijns in the early morning, which caused the one and only safety car period of the race, meant the #38 was delayed at the end of the pitlane by a red light, but that was just about the only misfortune that befell the team. With Frijns crashing out the lead WRT entry and the #41 Realteam by WRT car heavily delayed and damaged in the first-corner incident involving Rast and Owen, it was the third-string #42 car of Dries Vanthoor, Mirko Bortolotti and Rolf Ineichen that was the Belgian squad’s highest finisher in a lowly 10th place. The only blip on the way to victory for the #8 car was a slightly slow changeover from Buemi to Hartley in the penultimate hour, with Hartley going on to secure victory by a final margin of 2m01.222s over Lopez in the #7 machine. Two trips to the garage - first to replace the electronic clutch unit and then the ignition coil - were followed by a penalty for speeding and then another 20-minute spell in the pits after an off for Vaxiviere at the Porsche Curves in the morning hours. Although the car shared by Lopez, Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi was able to get back on to the lead lap, on pace there was virtually nothing to choose between the two Toyota crews, which had spent the first two thirds of the race exchanging the lead.

WEC: No.8 Toyota Wins 2022 Le Mans; Porsche GT Team ... (FIA)

Toyota took its fifth consecutive 24 Hours of Le Mans victory as well as its third one-two finish in the race.

Team Penske place fifth in class with Felipe Nasr, Dane Cameron and Emmanuel Collard making their final WEC appearance of 2022 together, before the team switches its focus to Porsche’s forthcoming LMDh project. Alpine ELF Team took point for fifth place for the 2022 WEC Hypercar class title bid but leaves Le Mans disappointed after a difficult weekend. The Aston Martin Vantage took the lead of the class from the WeatherTech Porsche 911 RSR-19 in the early morning, never looked back and went on to extend its lead beyond the reach of the US-entered car. WeatherTech Racing completed an excellent race but ultimately lost the chance of a victory after an off-track excursion in the early morning period. Glickenhaus Racing got one better than its 2021 fourth place by sealing a three-four finish. United Autosports concluded a fightback race from first-hour issues to place sixth, with the No.23 car of Alex Lynn, Oliver Jarvis and the youngest ever driver to start at Le Mans, Joshua Pierson. No.63 and No.64 Chevrolet Corvettes spent a good portion of the race in the lead but a suspension issue for the No.63 car of Nicky Catsburg, Jordan Taylor and Antonio Garcia, and then an early morning accident for the No.64 Alexander Sims-driven C8.R, meant an early end to US-entered teams’ hopes. This was one place behind the Miguel Molina, Davide Rigon and Antonio Fuoco-driven No.52 AF Corse Ferrari which was delayed in the early stages of the race by a puncture. TDS Racing x Vaillante Oreca-Gibson served up a feel-good story of Le Mans after replacing its chassis and driver ahead of the race. Adding to the British team’s previous wins in 2014 and 2017, the No.38 car controlled the field and lead home the Prema Orlen Team trio of Robert Kubica, Louis Deletraz and Lorenzo Colombo. Makowiecki took the chequered flag ahead of the No.51 AF Corse Ferrari driven by James Calado, Daniel Serra and Alessandro Pier Guidi in a close and tactical battle to the very end. Each of the three manufacturers in LMGTE Pro – Ferrari, Porsche and Corvette spend times leading the immensely competitive category over the course of the 24 hours.

Toyota secure fifth consecutive victory as fans flock to Le Mans 24 ... (The Guardian)

The team of Sébastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa won in the No 8 GR010, finishing ahead of their sister car at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

They were greeted with an enthusiasm from the spectators undimmed by themselves making it through the 24 hours and Toyota rightly revelled in their success. The challengers rejoined a full lap down with eight hours to go but Toyota admirably opted not to relax into the one-two as it stood with the No 7 crew continuing an unabated pursuit as the clock ticked down. They thronged the circuit and were rewarded with some compelling racing across the full 24 hours. Kobayashi delivered some stunning laps and with four hours remaining had closed to within almost two minutes. The driver crews were fiercely competitive as the pair vied through the night and into dawn over the 8.4-mile track. He was forced to reset the car and did get going again but had to pit and the team lost three minutes working on the issue.
