Darwin Nunez To Liverpool? The Latest Reports and News (Sports Illustrated)

The past few days have been a whirlwind of activity for Liverpool F.C in the transfer market.

As a way, the sticking point will come down to whether or not Liverpool can agree a fee with Benfica. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.’ Jurgen Klopp has already expressed that he is a huge admirer of Nunez, saying last season ‘He (Nunez) was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish. With that in mind, this recent development would certainly have been music to the Liverpool faithful's ears. It is also worth mentioning Liverpool have said they are still looking at other targets too. Another interesting development, considering The Reds' current transfer record fee sits at £75m and with Virgil van Dijk.

Darwin Nunez Transfer: Liverpool May Have To Break Club Record ... (Forbes)

The 22-year-old Uruguayan is high on the list of the club's transfer targets this summer.

“There is a different type of striker that we face now, that are doing very, very well, in the name of [Erling] Haaland, and also Darwin [Nunez], who is a bit similar. I always say in these situations if he is healthy he has a big career ahead of him.” It would be another eye-catching bit of business for a club who have risen to become one of the best in Europe once again. Manchester United have also been linked with the striker, but it is thought his preferred Premier League move would be to Liverpool, which would mean he remains at the top level of the game and playing in the Champions League—something United can’t currently offer. [Kylian] Mbappe is different quick. But usually by the time interest in a player becomes concrete, and especially by the time it becomes widely known, they have already identified the player as one who will want to join them, and fit with what they are trying to build.

Liverpool Reportedly Ready to Pay Record Transfer Fee for Darwin ... (The Liverpool Offside)

The 22-year-old Uruguayan appears to be the club's top forward target as the Reds look to reload their attack.

Núñez is said to favour a move to Liverpool. There are now even a smattering of reports out of Portugal that while an official bid has not been lodged, a proposal has been made that would see the Reds pay around €80M as a base fee plus a further €20M in add-ons. However, the transfer story has moved quickly today and it appears that Liverpool are in fact willing to pay that kind of a price for Núñez in a transfer that would serve as a major statement of intent and see Núñez eclipse Virgil van Dijk as the club’s record signing.

The Evolution of Darwin Nuñez: Here's Why Everyone Wants to Sign ... (The Analyst)

It's been phenomenal to bear witness to the conveyor belt of goalscoring prowess that Uruguay have churned out over the past 35 years.

The fit is important, but Núñez has a lot of strings to his bow and isn’t necessarily a systems player. He notched 16 goals in 32 games the season prior to that for Almería in LaLiga 2, but even that is a far from spectacular return. Liverpool of course signed a player from the Portuguese league in January who hit the ground running in no time at all. For Uruguay U20s he netted just four times in 14 games while for the senior side he has just two in nine. It’s a mix of composure and technique that makes Núñez impressive in front of goal. Cavani and Suárez in particular possess that in abundance, and it’s no surprise that Núñez recently said that the former is his idol. These qualities mostly relate to his ability in and around the penalty area. He averaged more non-penalty goals per 90 than any other player in the top six ranked European leagues in 2021-22 (1.00), while his 0.69 non-penalty xG per 90 was only bettered by four players. He has the positional intelligence to create perfect receiving angles from a through pass, and the pace and strength to steamroll his way towards the goal when the pass is played. Some players gain that power and frame when they hit their early 20s and can sometimes struggle to maintain their technical ability as the extra weight becomes a burden. And now, with Cavani and Suárez’s careers nearing an end, a new model of Uruguayan striker looks set to arrive off the conveyor belt. Even three years later in the 2014 World Cup, all three featured in the group stage where they overcame Italy and England to make it to the last 16.

Darwin Núñez wants Liverpool, and Liverpool want him. But Benfica stand in the way, and their big demands pose the first major test of a big FSG alteration.

And he also managed to negotiate the kind of instalment plans that made big-money deals manageable. Can he live up to his predecessor’s reputation as one of the game’s top negotiators? Now, with the summer window due to open on Friday, Ward may once again tap into his ‘strong network of contacts’ in Portugal, stemming from his work with the national team as head of analysis and technical scouting. In terms of outright performance levels, Díaz was arguably Liverpool’s best attacker in the final few months of the campaign. Ward also deserves credit for agreeing a favourable package within a short period of time. Julian Ward wasn’t supposed to take over as Liverpool’s sporting director until the summer, when Michael Edwards officially departed.

Nowadays, he's not one of the top strikers because he doesn't play in the top five leagues. You can also catch up with the ins, outs and analysis on Sky Sports News. The other one was Luis Diaz who moved to Liverpool in January and that made Nunez the absolute best player. They focus on playing for the team and making the whole team play well. But he can easily play out wide to break spaces for other players in the central areas if teams need him. Oxlade Chamberlain is another player with just one year left on his contract. Nunez led the way for goals and conversion rate for players taking 20 or more shots in the Primeira Liga last season. The high frequency of long passes contribute to a below-average accuracy, but his successful, raking distribution in central areas would offer Klopp another dynamic against low-block opposition. "He's a 'modern football striker' - like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe - strikers who don't just focus on scoring goals. He fired 85 shots at goal and that also converts into a league-topping conversion rate of 30.6 per cent. And a decent player as well!"

With 34 goals last season and two impressive cameos against Liverpool in the Champions League, it is hardly surprising that Klopp has identified the 22-year-old as his primary summer target. Three major Portuguese outlets, O Jogo, A Bola, and Record Portugal, have reported that this agreement is set to be finalized, with Record Portugal going so far as to say, "It's done". It will reportedly be the second most expensive transfer in Portuguese football history, with an initial fee of €80m plus €20m in add-ons being reported. With Sadio Mané's desire to join Bayern Munich, Liverpool has moved quickly to identify Benfica's Darwin Núñez as their primary target to replace the Senegalese. After Paul Joyce and various other outlets reported on Liverpool's interest in the striker over the past few days, it appears that an agreement is close to being reached between the two clubs.

Liverpool's Darwin Nunez Evolution: 6ft 2in striker can TRANSFORM ... (Daily Mail)

As good as this Liverpool side was - and is - during the past season it felt a puzzle piece short, an orthodox No 9 that really would give manager Jurgen ...

That should prove no issue for Liverpool giving the attacking attributes of both Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson. 'Klopp is still the best manager I worked with, although I didn't play a lot,' Christian Benteke told Belgian outlet HLN after he had left. Add in too that Trent Alexander-Arnold produced more crosses from right back than any player in the rest of the league. In that competition he took 16 shots and scored six goals. Now feels a moment that even Klopp knows is time to target something new, rather than more of the same. Not one of the 46 beat Tottenham's Hugo Lloris. That's a problem. Orthodox. Traditional. The type of striker Klopp has shied away from since moving on Christian Benteke in 2018. Service isn't the issue. The first thing to note is that at 6ft 2in Nunez is excellent in the air, a real threat, something Klopp's front line has traded off in favour of speed and dribble penetration. Nunez is a devastating finisher and looks to cut in from the left to curl into the far corner Evolution - and expect that word to come up a lot when more and more prose is written around Darwin Nunez - is a fact of life, though. And that's what Darwin Nunez represents.

Liverpool were right to reject Darwin Núñez transfer 'discount' as ... (Liverpool.com)

Liverpool reportedly had the chance to get a 'discount' of sorts on Darwin Núñez, but FSG are right not to go for the latest transfer proposal from Benfica.

It's less of a neat 'discount', but it makes the most sense for FSG. It would be a surprise if the answer to all three was yes. Aston Villa’s goal in a 2-1 Liverpool win in May was partly his fault, but you can count his blunders on one hand and still have fingers to spare. Stylistically, he’s virtually identical to Robertson. Compare Tsimikas to every single left-back in Europe’s top five leagues, and only three are a closer match, in terms of their statistical profile, than Robertson (per FBRef). Liverpool, however, are smart to say no, even if he covered, say, £15m (around 20 per cent) of the Núñez fee. While Benfica have asked about Tsimikas separately, this would effectively work out as a ‘discount’ on the Núñez deal.

Liverpool will finally have an orthodox striker in their arsenal if they manage to land a deal for Benfica's coveted hotshot Darwin Nunez - over a year ...

All the signs are positive for Liverpool, who have garnered a reputation for stealing a march on their rivals with their astute transfer business. A deal for Nunez would be a timely boost for Liverpool, who seem destined to lose Sadio Mane this summer. Van Dijk said: "He's a bit similar [to Haaland] - very direct, quick, tall, strong and it's quite difficult to play against him." And he a lot of the time plays out wide, because he can’t play as a centre-forward. "I think there’s too much pressure on those two players at the top of the pitch to score goals. Jota is not a striker, same with Mane, same with Salah. They have Divock Origi but he’s nowhere near good enough.
