But if the M2 processor can genuinely turn the humble MacBook Air into a gaming rig capable of playing the forthcoming No Man's Sky or Resident Evil: Village, then that really would mark a new era for the Mac. 304.1mm x 212.4mm x 15.6mm (11.97 x 8.36in x 0.61in) 304.1mm x 212.4mm x 15.6mm (11.97 x 8.36in x 0.61in) 2560 x 1600 (277ppi) A barrage of graphs and charts followed this announcement, intended to prove the superiority of the M2 over both the M1 and Intel's rival processors: 20% faster applying Photoshop filters, 38% faster for video-editing in Final Cut Pro, and more. 2560 x 1600 (277ppi) This year's keynote for Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) may not have sprung any similar surprises, but it still managed to be a real crowd-pleaser simply by giving the audience exactly what they wanted. 304.1mm x 212.4mm x 4.1-16.1mm (11.97in x 8.36in x 0.16-0.63in) 2560 x 1600 (277ppi) So successful was the design of the MacBook Air that -- bar a few refinements along the way -- it had remained largely unchanged ever since its launch in 2008. Apple just unveiled its biggest MacBook Air rethink in a decade ... (Fortune)

The company showcased the updated laptop Monday at its Worldwide Developers Conference, an event that's otherwise focused on software updates for the iPhone ...

Apple intended to launch the revamped MacBook Air in 2021, but it was delayed by supply-chain snags, the chip shortage and internal design challenges. Apple is also working on new Mac Pro desktop, high-end MacBook Pros, Mac minis and an iMac for release over the next year or so. When the MacBook Air was first unveiled by Jobs, the Apple co-founder famously pulled the ultrathin laptop out of a manila envelope. It also has as much as 24 gigabytes of memory, up from 16 in the M1. And there’s an updated video engine to more smoothly play 4K and 8K video. The machine has a 13.6-inch screen, up from 13.3 inches on the previous model, and — like the MacBook Pro — a 1080p camera with twice the resolution of the previous model. The new Air adds yet another machine to the company’s lucrative lineup of computers, which has seen revenue jump since a switch away from Intel Corp. chips in 2020.

Despite and because of all these, the MacBook Air retains its character as Apple’s most talented juggler, balancing the old and the new, the good as well as the bad. The new MacBook Air ushers in a new age for Apple’s lightweight notebook, but it also does so in an almost ironic way. Some might consider it a small matter, but it leaves up USB-C ports for more critical connections and avoids the stress of having to deal with Bluetooth. Apple may have addressed some of the biggest complaints and criticisms about the MacBook Pro, but it also introduced a new one last year. The MacBook Air has always been characterized as Apple’s slimmest and lightest laptop, but that also came with some compromises in terms of power. Yes, some of the last-minute rumors were on point, disappointing some who had hoped for a more colorful selection, but MacBook Air 2022 ended up turning heads, even with its more subdued hues, and was generally received well.

Compared: New M2 MacBook Air vs M1 MacBook Air (AppleInsider)

Apple has given the MacBook Air its first major refresh after it transitioned to Apple Silicon. Here's how the new M2 version measures against the 2020 M1 ...

Apple offered the 7-core GPU M1 MacBook Air with SSD options starting from 256GB and rising to 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB at most. The M2 MacBook Air has a larger 52.6-watt-hour lithium polymer battery. The M1 MacBook Pro has stereo speakers, which offer wide stereo sound. However, with the inclusion of MagSafe 3 charging, users can recharge their MacBook Air without sacrificing one of those two ports. The report claims the Geekbench 5 Single-Core test scores 1,869 on the M2 chip, up from the 1,706 of the M1 MacBook Air in Geekbench's browser. However, the shift to a 1080p webcam in the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models probably made those affected by pandemic work-from-home initiatives yearn for more resolution. Sticking with LED, the 2022 MacBook Air has a slightly larger 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display. The M1 MacBook Air has a footprint of 11.97 inches by 8.36 inches. The 2020 MacBook Air is best known for being a slim and light notebook while also giving users the essentials of Mac usability. However, this is based on pre-release chips, which may not reflect scores when the M2 MacBook Air ships. The M1 MacBook Air looked like the Intel model it replaced, albeit with new internal components. MacBook Air (2020, M1)

Apple's new MacBook Air M2 brings back a controversial feature (Creative Bloq)

Apple has given the Air a somewhat-extreme makeover, shrinking it by 20 per cent and giving dressing it up in new colour range. There's going to be an 18 per cent performance increase for starters, and the lack of fans mean working on it will be a totally silent experience. Thanks to the notch, we get a vast improvement to the low-quality camera that came before. But when comparing it to the ever-so-annoying uneven bezel thickness of the MacBook Air M1 (so ugly), we think the notch wins out. But there are a whole host of other redesigns and tweaks set to hit the new model, and one of them has given us quite a surprise. With a drastically updated body design, new colour range and the reintroduction of MagSafe charging, there's loads to like here.

Apple Unveils Redesigned MacBook Air With M2 SoC - ExtremeTech (ExtremeTech)

The upgraded Air offers a little bit more of everything. More power, better GPU, brighter display, a higher resolution webcam, ...

If you go with the base model you’ll get a standard 30W power adapter, but if you upgrade to the more expensive model you’ll get a power brick with two USB-C ports for dual-charging. It has the same eight-core CPU design as M1, which Apple says offers 18 percent more performance at the same wattage as the M1. It also continues to feature a fanless design, which is one of its most-loved features. Of course the big news is the all-new M2 SoC, which is physically larger than the M1 chip it replaces. The redesigned Air looks a lot like a slimmed-down version of the new MacBook Pro. Apple is using the same “slab” design versus the wedge of the previous model. The result is a slightly upgraded Air compared to its M1 predecessor.

MacBook Air 2022 vs MacBook Pro 2022: Which laptop should you ... (Tom's Guide)

The MacBook Air 2022 and MacBook Pro 2022 are both compelling M2-powered laptops, but there's some key differences you need to know.

The MacBook Air 2022 delivers strong M2 performance, a bigger display than the Pro and a sharper webcam in a slimmer and lighter design. And you can get it for $100 less than the MacBook Pro 2022. But I could see some splurging for the Pro to get a little extra oomph and more time away from the outlet. This is where the MacBook Pro 2022 pulls ahead. The MacBook Pro 2022 should offer longer endurance overall with its larger 58.2 watt-hour battery, as it's rated to last for 20 hours of video playback and 17 hours of wireless web surfing. The new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro are pretty evenly matched when it comes to their displays. Meanwhile, the MacBook Pro 2022 retains its $1,299 price. We can't say much about the audio quality yet, but the 2022 Air sports a new four-speaker system that's positioned between the keyboard and the display, complete with Spatial audio and Dolby Atmos support. Both the new MacBook Air and new MacBook Pro could be good enough to land on our best laptop list. A MacBook Air 2022 vs MacBook Pro 13-inch 2022 comparison is just what you need if you're trying to decide which new MacBook to buy this year. Here's how the new Air and Pro stack up. But Apple is keeping the entry-level MacBook Pro 2022 13-inch around for a reason, and it packs the same chip while offering some notable advantages over the Air.

MacBook Air (2022) hands-on: A serious leap forward (Tom's Guide)

The new MacBook Air delivers a powerful new M2 chip, better display and sharper webcam in a sleeker design, but it's pricey.

So who would get the $1,299 / AU$1,999 13-inch MacBook Pro? Anyone who wants even more power (thanks to its active cooling system) and 10-core GPU standard. The design is delightfully portable, and the display is simply awesome in person. Watching the MacBook Air M2 process seven simultaneous streams in Final Cut Pro, I once again felt like this system has the feel of a MacBook Pro in terms of power. The starting configuration comes with a 30W USB-power adapter, but the 35W power dual USB-port adapter costs $20 /AU$30 extra (it's included with the $1,499 model). And the 67W USB-C charger, which supports fast charging of 50% in 30 minutes, costs $20 /AU$30 more than the standard charger. Based on our initial impressions, the new MacBook Air 2022 could be one of the best laptops of the year. The new MacBook Air has the most Pro-level display yet, and that's thanks to an increased brightness of 500 nits. The highlight here is Stage Manager, a new way of multitasking that puts the app you're working on front and center while also making it easy to switch between other open apps. The first thing I noticed about the new MacBook Air 2022 is how small and light it feels. Neither of those numbers vary from what Apple promises with the M1 MacBook Air, though. The Midnight MacBook Air has personality without being too loud. During a demo I was very impressed with the volume and clarity. The $1,499 / AU$2,349 model steps that up to a 10-core GPU for more graphics muscle and 512GB SSD.

Apple M2 Chip Gives New MacBook Air 18% Speed Boost (CNET)

Apple's M series and A series chips are members of the Arm processor family. Intel's newest PC processor, code-named Alder Lake, embraces the same mix of high-performance and high-efficiency CPU cores found in smartphone chips and Apple's M series chips. Intel is working to modernize its manufacturing, spending tens of billions of dollars on new chipmaking fabs. The new MacBook Airs take up 20% less volume but still have a long, 18-hour battery life, Apple said. M series chips build memory directly into the processor package for fast performance, but it's not upgradable. Overall, the new MacBook Air is 20% faster at Photoshop image editing and 38% faster at Final Cut Pro video editing, Apple said.

MacBook Air (2022) Hands-On: You Can Ignore the MacBook Pro 13 (Gizmodo)

Excuse the cliché, but the MacBook Air feels grown-up. I'm thinking it's the shape—gone is the iconic slanting edge, replaced in favor of stout straight ...

Overall, the new MacBook Air is a nice upgrade over the previous model. More importantly, it makes me question why anyone would buy the $1,299 MacBook Pro—and why Apple continues to sell it. New this year is a dual-port 35W USB-C power adapter that lets you charge the laptop and a second device simultaneously. Standard is a 30W charger that comes with the base model. The company claims the MacBook Air will last for 18 hours on a charge during video playback or 15 hours of continuous web browsing. For the more technical bits, the M2 processor is based on the same 5-nanometer technology as the M1 but everything is elevated. While I couldn’t run any benchmarks, Apple ran me through a few impressive demos that flaunted the performance of the MacBook Air’s M2 chip. The “Liquid Retina” panel is brighter—by 25% for up to 500 nits, Apple claims—and the colors are accurate and punchy. Sure, but at least the braided MagSafe cables look durable and can be color-matched to the laptop. The blame belongs to me for believing early MacBook Air rumors that suggested we’d get the same vivid rainbow hues as the iMac. Apple isn’t ready to ready to have fun with its laptop yet, and I’m tired of waiting. Now the Air looks like the MacBook Pro, and with its larger 13.6-inch screen, more like the premium Pro than its smaller but M2-touting counterpart. I always felt the wedge shape made the MacBook Air look thinner than it really was.

MacBook Air M2: What You Can Get For Your Money (CNET)

Looking to pick up a new Apple Macbook Air M2? Here's a look at the various configurations and what may be your best option.

Apple's New MacBook Air Is $200 More—and Probably Worth It (The New York Times)

Apple announced new M2-equipped MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros at its 2022 WWDC keynote presentation.

Although small usability upgrades like that will factor into our recommendations for most people, the new processor will be a major factor when we consider the new MacBook Air in a future update to our guide to the best video and photo editing laptops, which are meant for more specialized uses. Starting at $100 more than the new MacBook Air, the 13-inch MacBook Pro has the same M2 processor but adds a cooling fan inside, which Apple says will keep the processor cool when it’s under heavy loads for long periods of time. All the new laptops will ship in July, and as soon as we’ve had time to thoroughly test the new models, we’ll be updating our recommendations. If the M2 MacBook Air improves on the experience of the M1 version, that will make the newly announced M2 13-inch MacBook Pro a strange in-between to consider. To fit that larger screen into a similarly sized laptop, Apple has added a camera notch at the top, similar to that of the iPhone and the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. Nestled within that notch is a 1080p webcam, the same camera as in the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros, and a nicer camera than the 720p version found in the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, a crucial benefit in the videoconference age.

MacBook Pro M2 13-Inch vs. MacBook Air M2: Do You Need to Go ... (CNET)

Apple updated its top consumer MacBook and its smallest Pro model with its new, more powerful M2 chips. But the Air might be the better choice for pros.

The new Air with the M2 chip has the same internal components as the updated 13-inch MacBook Pro. However, the Air has a new fanless design, a larger, higher-quality display, a higher-resolution webcam and four-speaker audio. The 2022 version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro is identical to its predecessor, with the exception of the new M2 chip. The 13-inch MacBook Pro is also the last model to have a Touch Bar in place of the function key row. The MacBook Pro does have an active cooling system, however, aka fans, which might enable the 13-inch Pro to work harder than the fanless M2-based MacBook Air. We won't know for sure until we test them both. Instead of the more blocky, slab-like design of the newer models, it has a more curved base and lid. However, with the new version of the Air, it might be better for professionals to go with that instead of the MacBook Pro, unless you're a commercial buyer who needs platform consistency.

Hands on with the M2 MacBook Air (sixcolors.com)

Unlike the M1 MacBook Air, which was about providing a comforting shell around the then-new concept of a Mac running an Apple-designed processor, the new Air ...

On Monday, Apple claimed that the MacBook Air is the most popular laptop model in the world. If you’re planning on doing that a lot, the 14-inch MacBook Pro might be a better buy. But if the characteristics of the M1 are any indication, that would only ever happen if you maxed out the GPU for a very long time, perhaps while playing a game or performing a very complicated render. So, there was another laptop announced on Monday: the 13-inch MacBook Pro. To call this a new laptop would not be right. What do you get if you buy a 13-inch M2 MacBook Pro instead of an M2 MacBook Air? A bigger, heavier computer (with a smaller screen!) that must be charged via one of its two USB-C ports. This is in contrast to last year’s MacBook Pro, which shipped with a Silver cable, even if your laptop was of the Space Gray variety. Ever since the M1 iMac launched with six bright color options (plus silver), rumors abounded that the next MacBook Air would join the party and embrace color. And Apple has chosen not to provide it with enough I/O power to drive a second external display. I lament the loss of more fun colors for these laptops, but I have to admit that Midnight looks great to me. (There’s no “MacBook Air” inscription on the bottom, though.) The edges of the laptop are flat, reflecting Apple’s current hardware aesthetic. And perhaps most importantly, the MagSafe charging is back on the Air! It’s also quite thin, though instead of the classic wedge design, Apple has kept it a consistent 0.44 inches (1.13cm) thick—thicker than the thin end of the wedge but thinner than the thick edge.

The processing power of the M2 chip will hardly have its work cut out making these images look good, but it’s nice to have alongside a camera that produces twice the resolution and low-light performance of the previous generation. They even rather ironically include a USB-C to MagSafe adaptor cable with the Air so you can use a USB-C charger to power the laptop… In addition, the new display now supports 1 billion colours, so photos, movies, and even your favourite NFTs look amazing. In case your workloads involve high volumes of 3D image processing and 4K or 8K video editing then you’ll love the 100GB/s of unified memory bandwidth and up to 24GB of fast unified memory.
