Martin instructed his players to form a circle in the center of the locker room with me in the middle. One night long ago at Marion High School, I was locked out of the school in frantic need of a phone line. In October, I covered a William Fleming home game against Northside. The Colonels didn’t have a prayer, but after the game the coach gave me one anyway. I drove to a local motel where a loud party was taking place in a ballroom. When people ask how long I worked in the newspaper business, this is my answer. Woody was near the end of a 50-year career that began sometime in the early 1930s. The article was a tryout of sorts. Woody retired after 50 years in the business and didn’t show up for his going-away party. Every day at work he put on a visor and reached into his desk drawer for a block of cheese and a small knife.

He became the leading player to push for expulsion of Black players, and the creation of all-white baseball leagues. Hoover was a massive baseball fan, but if he ever noticed the game he loved only had white players he never mentioned it. He was also fiercely racist, even by the standards of the late 19th century. “Except for Sundays, we played medicine ball every morning of the week, including official holidays,” Hoover’s Secretary of the Interior wrote in his memoirs. This magpie’s nest of a game was invented by Adm. Joel Boone, Hoover’s physician while he was president from 1929 to 1933.
