The film sees Paddington delighted to learn that The Queen shares his love of marmalade sandwiches.

Filming with Her Majesty and Paddington Bear at The Palace is a memory we will all cherish; Her Majesty’s warmth and generosity was a joy to behold. And who better to thank Her Majesty than Paddington, over a pot of tea, a marmalade sandwich, and with a touch of chaos. There was an interest in the filming and animation process and the opportunity to invite a famous bear to tea was just too much fun to miss. A fitting tribute To Her Majesty The Queen as the UK celebrates The Platinum Jubilee weekend. The Queen has been unable to attend much of the Jubilee celebrations for health reasons. As the beloved bear shows Her Majesty what he hides underneath his hat, the Queen confirms “So do I,” before prising open her bag and remarking “I keep mine in here.”

The enigma of Elizabeth II (The Guardian)

Over her long reign, the Queen has shaped and reflected the world we live in while remaining mysterious and unknowable. Like it or not, she has been the ...

But the beauty and pomp, however diminished in that moment as a result of the pandemic, also reminded us that she is always and endlessly a person apart; that all of her power resides in this human scarcity. Turn your gaze forward, on the other hand, and this is the same woman who will hand the Beatles their MBEs and the World Cup to the captain of England; who will meet men – Buzz Aldrin, Michael Collins and Neil Armstrong – who have walked on the moon; who will open, in spite of the disapproval of her mother, the Channel tunnel. We can only think of her as we mostly do, which for the majority is with a weird, unwarranted fondness. We decide what we think about these things – the Queen was, for instance, horribly cold-hearted to remain closeted with her family at Balmoral after the death of Diana until, that is, she returned in London to talk to the crowds, at which point she was just a protective grandmother – and this is half of the point of monarchy. The Queen is a good at obliviousness, something this must come in handy not only at Christmas, but when meeting the likes of Donald Trump. The mystery that surrounds the Queen, the fact that she is, and always has been, a repository for our high emotions, is her greatest asset. The fortitude that many people feel has seen her through the 70 years of her reign, already in place in 1952, was very much born of the past. One of the strangest books about her, of all the hundreds and thousands that have been published since she acceded to the throne in 1952, is surely The Crown Dissected, in which Hugo Vickers, “an acknowledged authority” on the royal family, carefully corrects the “facts” as they are portrayed in each episode of The Crown, the long-running series on Netflix. It’s one thing to know, as I now do, that the Queen was born, not in a palace, but in a terraced house in Bruton Street in Mayfair (the London home of her maternal grandfather) at a time (1926) when there was still an old soldier alive who could describe the Charge of the Light Brigade (because he – his name was Edwin Hughes – had taken part in it). It’s quite another to insist on moods and opinions and feelings. Her smile, at this point, seemed to suggest that she recollected Churchill as both ridiculously sentimental, and rather wonderfully so; as a human being who had access to thoughts and emotions often utterly alien to her, and which were all the more attractive to her for it. But then the film started, and all of this stuff – coolness; cynicism; the feeling that it is almost one’s duty, these days, to be a republican – slipped away. It was raining cats and corgis by the time I arrived in Finsbury Park last Tuesday, a fact that only served, given the dubiousness of my mission, to make me feel the more furtive.

Queen's platinum jubilee concert 2022: the Platinum Party at the ... (The Guardian)

One of the showpiece events for the platinum jubilee is a concert with Queen, Diana Ross, Elton John and more.

This only reinforces my belief that the staunchest royalists all spent the year 2000 smashed on WKD and listening to Oxide and Neutrino. Andrew Lloyd Webber is now sitting at a piano with Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is singing a version of You Say from Hamilton with lyrics rewritten to reflect the jubilee. What I like most about this Lion King bit is that they’re all waving birds on sticks around, like the things they stick on top of tips to keep the seagulls out. At a concert for the Queen. Remember when Windsor Castle burned down in the 1990s? Either way, they’re singing Notorious and they look for all the world like they’re having a ball. And now for Sigala and Ella Eyre, singing the sort of song that ITV2 would choose to soundtrack a Take Me Out promo. Single-handedly responsible for rescuing the UK’s reputation at Eurovision, it now falls upon him to make us all forget about Andrew Lloyd Webber. He’s wearing a sparkly Union Jack pyjama onesie, and he has managed to unite a bored and fractious crowd. Judi Dench and David Beckham are now being projected onto the side of Buckingham Palace to thank the Queen for her service. She’s singing Empire State of Mind, but for the last chorus she’s changed “New York” to “London”. “London, concrete jungle where dreams are made of”, she sings. I’ve just checked Twitter, and Lee Mack seems to be the highest trending performer of the night. This is my proudest achievement, and a fitting high to go out on. You know, I’ve been writing this liveblog without a break for almost four hours and I haven’t used the term ‘Platty Joobs’ once.

I want to enjoy the jubilee, but I am conflicted…

But in 2014, the traumatised Syrian war veteran Dr David Nott visited the palace and was overcome by a PTSD attack when the Queen asked him about his work. And my gran loved the Queen; because of the second world war; because of the corgis; and because of getting a television to watch the coronation in 1953. But what does it mean to wave a British flag, now that Brexit has trashed our international reputation, compromised England’s relationship with Scotland and Northern Ireland and left our most precious cultural institutions at the mercy of the sadistic philistine gentleman thugs elected to deliver it? “Why do you always have to act stupid all the time and ruin everything?” my gran despaired, not realising there was a career in it. And to this day I bitterly regret making a stupid scrunched-up monkey face to my mum’s camera as the royal car drove past us and the Queen waved her white glove, after our eight-hour wait at the railings on Solihull high street. My gran was a spiritual forebear of that generation that voted for Brexit, ruined their great-grandchildren’s futures and then promptly died.

Two British icons, at the same table, discussing a mutual love for marmalade — or should we say “ma’amalade” sandwiches. A message reading “Thank you Ma’am” lit up the sky above Buckingham Palace Saturday night as a star-studded music concert unfolded. Emotional crowd members told The Washington Post that the queen has been “a constant for 70 years in a very changing and frightening world." On the ground, a parade starred 1,400 troops, hundreds of horses and a swarm of royal super fans. The Times of London called him the “royal jester," while The Sun could only find one, very British word for his display: cheeky. In the skies over Buckingham Palace, drones formed the shapes of floating teacups and giant corgis.

Pomp and circumstance at the Queen's Platinum Jubilee (CBS News)

Meanwhile at Buckingham Palace, this is the way royal milestones – like, 70 years on the throne – are proclaimed now, reports correspondent Mark Phillips.

Phillips asked, "She's more than the Queen of the United Kingdom. She's been described as kind of Queen of the world. It's an affectionate tribute to a hereditary monarch who has hung around, done her job, and – somehow – embodied the national spirit. Among the appreciative crowds was Donna Werner, from New Fairfield, Connecticut. Phillips asked, her, "Coming from the U.S., a country that went to some special effort to get rid of this monarchy, what brought you back to it?" "As we've all been locked away for two years, to dance and to sing and to eat together, it's really important. "In many ways she is a sort of national timepiece," said Robert Hardman, whose latest book on the royals is "Queen of Our Times." There are different ways of looking at this Jubilee. It's a harkening back to an imagined romantic age of princes and princesses. "There's a sort of timelessness to the Queen," Hardman said. Now she's brought that same steeliness and expertise to her job as queen." But there is still a sort of timelessness to that aura." And not just for the thousands of patriotic Brits who turned out for these events. Again, Charles was there on her behalf, with the future Queen Camilla. And William, the next in line, with Kate. And (perhaps stealing the headlines) Harry and Meghan. The couple, now estranged from the family and in self-imposed exile in California, were allowed this cameo in the Jubilee show. This Jubilee has been a bit of a royal shell game.

Queen Elizabeth II performed a short sketch with Paddington Bear while missing a concert for her Platinum Jubilee. The two British treasures had tea.

The presentation began with a clip of the queen’s 1989 Christmas message, in which she called on all nations to work together to protect the earth for “our children and our children’s children.” On Saturday, five of her former racehorses were paraded, and 40 jockeys who have ridden for the queen formed a guard of honor before the national anthem was played. It was the couple’s first public appearance in the U.K. since they stepped back from royal duties and moved to California two years ago. Apart from attending Friday’s service, the couple has so far stayed out of the limelight. Despite the queen’s absence, spirits were high during an event that culminated with appearances by the monarch’s son and grandson. The sketch featured the queen having a cream tea with British national treasure Paddington Bear at Buckingham Palace. That is what we celebrate tonight.” That is why we are here. “Not for me,” she said, decked out from head to toe in the flags of the U.K. and Wales. “She turned up on the first day, and we know she would have been there if she could have been.” “There was an interest in the filming and animation process and the opportunity to invite a famous bear to tea was just too much fun to miss.”
