Queen's Platinum Jubilee concert: Music, royalty, drones, and ... (Euronews)

Buckingham Palace was transformed into a huge movie screen for tens of thousands of people who cheered the Queen, and saw a galaxy of stars performing.

On Saturday, five of her former racehorses were paraded, and 40 jockeys who have ridden for the queen formed a guard of honor before the national anthem was played. “Her majesty is well known for her sense of humor, so it should be no surprise that she decided to take part in tonight’s sketch,’’ the palace said. Despite the queen’s absence, spirits were high during an event that culminated with appearances by the monarch’s son and grandson. The sketch featured the queen having a cream tea with British national treasure Paddington Bear at Buckingham Palace. "Mankind has benefitted from unimaginable technological developments and scientific breakthroughs. The long-time mystery was solved Saturday when the British monarch made the second star turn of her career, appearing in a mini-movie to kick off a concert celebrating her 70 years on the throne.

Striking moments from Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee (The Washington Post)

Floating tea-cups and corgis. Fighter jets. Paddington Bear. Prince Louis. And soon: A huge golden carriage.

Two British icons, at the same table, discussing a mutual love for marmalade — or should we say “ma’amalade” sandwiches. A message reading “Thank you Ma’am” lit up the sky above Buckingham Palace Saturday night as a star-studded music concert unfolded. Emotional crowd members told The Washington Post that the queen has been “a constant for 70 years in a very changing and frightening world." On the ground, a parade starred 1,400 troops, hundreds of horses and a swarm of royal super fans. The Times of London called him the “royal jester," while The Sun could only find one, very British word for his display: cheeky. In the skies over Buckingham Palace, drones formed the shapes of floating teacups and giant corgis.

Platinum jubilee: How Buckingham Palace balcony became key to ... (The Independent)

It is where the firm is at its 'most visible but also at its most strategic,' says one expert, as these six historic moments might suggest...

The country was two years into a period of considerable hardship and the Queen realised that if she had dozens of hangers-on, it could have gone very awry and raised a lot of questions about who was footing the bill. Yet the balcony moment arguably showed the Queen at her most astute when it came to reading the public mood. George VI – who had remained living at the palace despite it being bombed nine times – was right alongside him to revel in (and become explicitly associated with) the victory. With cigar in mouth and having apparently partaken a drink, the PM had already addressed Londoners from the Ministry of Health balcony earlier that day. Yet if the public display of affection was entirely off-the-cuff, it arguably couldn’t have been better scripted. Time and again down the years, they have used appearances there – with considerable shrewdness, it has to be said – to emphasise and maintain their place at the heart of the nation.” “And it was ours because we were young.” He visited troops 450 times and, famously, changed the family name from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to the more anglicised Windsor. When HG Wells later called him “uninspiring and alien”, he took some offence. The appearance was the first of what is generally considered a “good war” for the king. From war victory celebrations to wedding kisses, the balcony has become one of the royal’s most effective bits of kit in both engaging Britons and entwining itself within the fabric of the nation. Yet perhaps six key moments show just how crucial the platform has become to continuing the royal story, while this year’s appearance may indicate the future of the monarchy. “The cheering was terrific [but] please God it may be soon over.”

Colorful pageant, street fests cap queen's Platinum Jubilee (KAIT)

Royal fans are hoping for an appearance by Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace after a colorful street pageant through London on Sunday.

Later Sunday, celebrities including singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran will belt out “God Save The Queen” outside Buckingham Palace as a finale to the pageant. She has limited her appearances in recent months due to what the palace describes as “episodic mobility issues.” She also had COVID-19 this spring. Some came for the celebrities who will be performing, while others wanted to be part of a historical moment. Royal fans were hoping to see another glimpse of the 96-year-old monarch later at Buckingham Palace, where the parade ends. It’s something special, so if you are going to do it you’ve got to go big or go home,” said Shaun Wallen, 50. The celebrities paid tribute to the queen’s decades of service to the U.K. and the Commonwealth. Prince Charles, her eldest son and heir to the throne, highlighted his mother’s role as a symbol of unity and stability through the decades.

Jill Biden also says in the interview that her divorce from her first husband taught her to be independent and that she has drilled that lesson into her daughter and granddaughters. The first lady has revealed that and more in a new interview in the June-July issue of Harper's Bazaar. The magazine is featuring Jill Biden on its cover and says it's the first time in its 155-year history that a U.S. first lady has been so prominently featured. "People are watching the family dynamic to see if there are tensions, and there would be a huge outcry, I think, if we see Prince Andrew on the balcony. As a young woman, the princess donned her military uniform and stood alongside Winston Churchill to celebrate the end of World War II in 1945. So was Prince Andrew, who has been disgraced by a sex scandal and his links to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Every June, the extended royal family put on their finest uniforms, hats and frocks and gather to mark the queen's birthday, celebrated with an extravagant military parade known as Trooping the Color and concluding with the balcony moment after the Royal Air Force flies past.
