And there will be an attempt to break the record for the world’s longest street party. The queen, though, may miss the races to attend a birthday party for her great-granddaughter. - Trooping the Colour: On Thursday morning, 1,400 officers and soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians will participate in a parade that has marked the official birthday of the British monarch for more than 260 years. From parades to a pop concert at Buckingham Palace, Britain is commemorating an unprecedented Platinum Jubilee year of the monarchy with a four-day weekend. The queen would traditionally ride with the military parade on horseback but in recent years has shifted to driving alongside in a carriage. The beginning of his 50th year on the throne was marked with church services, feasts, fireworks and souvenirs. But in 1959, she shifted it to the second Saturday. It has been a central feature of the British royal calendar for more than 260 years and sees a huge display of over 1,400 parading soldiers, many clad in iconic red uniforms and black bearskin hats. But her father, King George VI, was born on Dec. 14, and he tended to mark his official birthday on the second Thursday in June. She has anchored the country through uncertainty — and the royal family’s own dramas. In her note, the queen urges that people should look back but also forward. The castle tower and a statue of King Charles II are out of focus in the background.

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee: Live Updates (The New York Times)

Platinum Jubilee festivities for Britain's longest-serving monarch, 96, are taking place over four days, with parades, street parties and a service in St.

The traditional Derby Stakes, known as the Epsom Derby — one of Britain’s best-known horse races — will be held in the afternoon. Emerging from Tube stations surrounding the park, people held Union Jack flags and lawnchairs as they headed toward the palace for the start of the long weekend of Jubilee festivities. Men and women with military medals polished to a high shine streamed into the parks around Buckingham Palace in the early morning hours before a parade to mark Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday. A new official portrait of the queen was also released to mark the Platinum Jubilee. The photograph was taken at Windsor Castle on May 25, 2022. The queen is expected to take part in a select number of public events during the four day festivities. Despite chilly and rainy weather, the queen and Prince Philip waved to crowds from the deck of the royal barge for hours as it made its way down a seven-mile stretch of the river. Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth II’s great-great-grandmother, was also the first British monarch to celebrate 60 years on the throne with her Diamond jubilee. The queen also celebrated her Ruby Jubilee at 40 years of service and Sapphire Jubilee at 65 years, though neither included official national celebrations. Among them was a group of women from the United States, Britain and France who were deep in discussion about the truthfulness of the Netflix series “The Crown” when I met them. “We should see this really exciting boost for tourism — and, frankly, we all need a holiday,” said Allen Simpson, the managing director of London & Partners, the promotional arm for the city. It is not clear how much the queen will take part in the jubilee celebrations, given her frail condition and the problems she has had walking recently. That link has been sacred to her since she served in the auxiliary service as a driver and truck mechanic during World War II, when she was a young princess.

Members of the royal family traditionally make their way down The Mall in open carriages, waving to the gathered crowds before the queen inspects the troops and takes a salute at the parade ground. The grand display of military pageantry will this year include more than 1,200 officers and soldiers as well as hundreds of Army musicians and around 240 horses. Queen Elizabeth II is the world’s third-longest serving monarch in recorded history, and the longest of any British or female sovereign. For just the second time in her 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth will not take the salute on the ground during the parade, instead receiving a salute from the palace balcony. For Willows, braving the chilly London nights sleeping on a tiny mattress was worth it to celebrate this anniversary. LONDON — Royal superfans have been camped out in tents by Buckingham Palace for days leading up to the festivities. “[The Queen] has given her service every day of the year for 70 years. The pair traveled about 100 miles from Bristol to be there. The queen has kicked off the long jubilee weekend with a message thanking everyone involved in marking the occasion. Some were decked out in Union Jack-themed hats and shirts, while others wore tiaras and even ball gowns to celebrate the queen. It was not clear what was behind the protest. He described her as "the golden thread that binds our two countries."

Queen Elizabeth's Jubilee: What happens next for the monarchy? (Los Angeles Times)

As Britons celebrate Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, questions swirl about her health and the next steps for the world's most famous monarchy.

“Don’t kill off the queen quite yet,” said Dickie Arbiter, 81, the queen’s press former secretary, who is now a prolific commentator on the royal family. “There are a lot of people who will mourn her loss. Besides the United Kingdom — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — the British monarch also reigns over Canada, Australia and a dozen other nations that were former colonies, mostly in the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Charles was portrayed as a villain in the press leading up to his divorce from Princess Diana in 1996. Last year, Barbados decided to ditch the queen as its head of state. “The new normal, if you’d like, is that you don’t know if she’s going to turn up,” said Chris Ship, the royal editor of the ITV network and a host of its live coverage. Elizabeth, who was born April 21, 1926, but whose birthday is marked nationally on the second Saturday of June, broke the former record reign for a British monarch — set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria — in 2015. None of these men are as popular as the queen or as known globally.” But her brief presence alongside other members of the royal family served only to underscore how rare and unpredictable such public appearances have become as Elizabeth battles increasing infirmity. He is also 73, nearly three times older than his mother was when she became queen at 25. A trip to the Caribbean in March by Prince William and his wife that was meant to shore up support for the monarchy wound up doing the opposite for many amid photos of the white royal couple shaking hands with Black children in Jamaica through a wire fence. She herself has become increasingly frail and canceled numerous engagements.

Queen Elizabeth II to miss St. Paul's service Friday due to 'discomfort ... (USA TODAY)

In a disappointing turn, the queen will miss the service at St. Paul's Cathedral on Friday due to "discomfort" after the Trooping parade.

"Taking into account the journey and activity required to participate in tomorrow’s National Service of Thanksgiving at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Her Majesty with great reluctance has concluded that she will not attend." Given the religious and family-oriented aspects of the service, it was considered one of her must-do events during the four-day jubilee holiday this weekend. The queen was expected to put the Service of Remembrance at the top of her jubilee weekend to-do list, in part because she's devout and in part because it's a gathering of her entire family, not just the "working" senior royals. She also tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this year. The palace announcement said the queen "greatly enjoyed" Thursday's Trooping the Colour parade that kicked off the four-day holiday celebrating her Platinum Jubilee marking her 70 years on the throne. Though Queen Elizabeth II had a great time at the Trooping the Colour parade kicking off her Platinum Jubilee celebrations in London Thursday, "discomfort" she's experiencing will nix her much-anticipated attendance at church on Friday, Buckingham Palace said.

Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee celebrations: What to expect (CBS News)

The United Kingdom and its 14 Commonwealth realms are marking the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's ascension to the throne.

There is then a flypast by Britain's Royal Air Force, which members of the working royal family will watch from the Buckingham Palace balcony. The ceremony includes a massive parade with more than 1,400 soldiers and 400 musicians joined by members of the royal family in carriages and on horseback. It was not made clear, however, what events they would attend. As part of the traditional "Trooping the Color" ceremony, the queen inspects her troops and is given a royal salute. Here is everything you need to know: The Platinum Jubilee is the 70th anniversary of a British monarch's reign, and Queen Elizabeth II is the first to reach the milestone.

Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee: Live Updates (The New York Times)

Queen Elizabeth II made several public appearances Thursday as Britain began four days of a Platinum Jubilee honoring her 70 years as monarch.

The queen had initially been scheduled to attend but canceled to “pace herself” through the weekend, according to the BBC, and then also canceled her appearance on Friday after experiencing “discomfort” on the first day of festivities. The queen had initially been expected to attend Friday’s event, but Buckingham Palace said late Thursday that she had decided to skip the service after experiencing discomfort on a busy first day of festivities. The celebrations are timed to coincide with her official Queen’s Birthday, an annual public holiday, although Elizabeth’s actual birthday is April 21. Her daughter, Princess Anne, will attend on her behalf. She has complained of trouble walking in the past, and has canceled several other public engagements, including the state opening of Parliament last month. He has been largely banished from public life because of his association with Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier and convicted sex offender. Her grandson Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, did not attend the initial events but are invited to a jubilee service on Friday. The palace did not say whether he was experiencing symptoms. Andrew, scarred by his association with Jeffrey Epstein, the deceased financier and convicted sex offender, has been sent into a form of internal exile. Other recent health issues prompted her to miss some public appearances. (He has since stepped down as president of the All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.) Buckingham Palace announced the lineup well in advance, seeking to avert weeks of speculation about whether they would be invited.

It shows the queen dressed in a dark cape, holding the reins of two of her own stunningly white fell ponies, Bybeck Nightingale and Bybeck Katie. In sign of her priorities, Buckingham Palace said last month that her “ episodic mobility problems” would prevent her from overseeing the State Opening of Parliament, and yet she managed to get herself to the Windsor Horse Show the same week. She was joined at the TV set by Andrew Parker Bowles, Camilla’s previous husband. Though the three Thoroughbreds the queen entered for the main event have all scratched, her horse “Just Fine” is set to compete in the penultimate race, according to the British sporting press. She experienced “some discomfort” during the opening day parade, the palace said, and would be missing some jubilee events. She “is expected to watch it on television at Windsor Castle,” the palace said Friday. Her sons and grandsons Princes Charles, Andrew, William and Harry all play or played polo. But we are so glad you are still in the saddle.” “She is a marvelous rider. The Times of London reported that the queen looked “full of life” and that the “secret was simple: horses.” Like the soldiers, the horses did as they were told. And five of her retired racehorses will join a parade at the track to celebrate her “unrivaled contribution to the equestrian world,” according to the organizers.

Queen Elizabeth was thanked for her years as head of state at a service to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee, an event she missed due to her "mobility issues."

"While I am disappointed the queen is not here today, she deserves a day off," said Akachi Okoro, 45, who had traveled from Scotland. They were greeted by cheers and a few boos by fans outside, while members of the congregation strained to catch a glimpse as they walked through the cathedral. Opinion polls show she remains hugely popular and respected among British people. "I think they should be more supportive towards her," she said. She later led the lighting of the Principal Platinum Jubilee Beacon at her Windsor Castle home near London. And we are glad that there is still more to come.
