Appeal? That’s the general, for the men’s matches,” former two-time Grand Slam champion Mauresmo said. Asked about the scheduling of the night session, Mauresmo told reporters that it would have been ‘difficult’ to give spectators with a single ticket for the evening to see only female players. It happened on Tuesday, when the Rafael Nadal v Novak Djokovic epic quarter-final clash finished around 1.15 am.

French Open director Amelie Mauresmo, a former world No. 1 player named to the post in December, discussed the lack of night games for women.

“My goal was when I was doing the schedule every day to try and see, and from the first round when the draw came out, to try and see what match in the women’s draw I can put there. “It was tough for more than one night to find the match of the day. In her first year as the tournament director, Amelie Mauresmo has already given a very controversial take about the scheduling of matches.

“That’s actually a key issue that needs to be settled, and that will be one of our priorities in the future,” Mauresmo said. If we continue with these night sessions in this direction, people need to leave the stadium late enough and make sure that they have a way to come back home, as they should.” “That’s the general (reason) for the men’s matches.” Mauresmo’s session with reporters was held the morning after 13-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal’s 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) quarterfinal victory over defending champion Novak Djokovic in Tuesday’s night session. Night sessions at the U.S. Open, for example, usually include one women’s match and one men’s match. It dropped below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (15 Celsius) during his quarterfinal. “And some may say that it’s unpredictable and girls are not consistent. There’s more drama.” “There’s more rallies. “In this era that we are in right now, I don’t feel — and as a woman, former women’s player, I don’t feel bad or unfair saying that, right now — you have more ... appeal,” Mauresmo said. Asked about that decision-making process, Mauresmo said in French that having just one match in each night session made it “more difficult to have” that be a women’s match. “It’s kind of the personal opinion of every person if they like men’s tennis or women’s tennis more or if they like them equally, but I think women’s tennis has a lot of advantages,” said Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, who has won 33 matches in a row.

PARIS — For 30 weeks in 2006, Frenchwoman Amelie Mauresmo was ranked No. 1 in the world, a champion of that year's Australian Open and Wimbledon.

Mauresmo also expanded women’s role in tennis as coach of former No. 1 Andy Murray for a time. “ When you have this — it’s an interesting one, because as I was saying, the fact that it’s right now a one-match night session is tough on this. Serena Williams, the sport’s 23-time Grand Slam champion, hasn’t competed in 11 months, not since her first-round loss at Wimbledon last year. Appeal? — for the men’s matches,” Mauresmo said, asked about the gender imbalance in the scheduling of the feature night match on Court Philippe-Chatrier. “My goal was when I was doing the schedule every day to try and see, and from the first rounds, from the first round, when the draw came out, to try and see what match in the woman's draw can I put there, honestly,” she said. “The confrontation or the star that I could put there.

Nights Prove a Tricky Ticket at French Open (The New York Times)

Building a buzz at night at Roland Garros has stirred up moments of gender inequality, dilemmas for fans and neighbors and inconveniences for players.

And yet it is supposed to get the marquee match even if the contract, according to L’Équipe, allows the French Open organizers the final say. But the one-match nighttime format also made it difficult to showcase Swiatek, who is winning most of her matches in a hurry at this stage. To have the matchup of the tournament end at 1:15 a.m. on a weeknight surely was not great for viewership in France, either. “The generation and depth of talent we are currently witnessing in the sport is incredible,” he said. But she said she struggled to find the marquee matchups and star power she was seeking. Because, according to Mauresmo, the night-session broadcast contracts from 2021 through 2023 stipulate that there be just one match. But the new night sessions at Roland Garros, created above all to increase profits for an event that trails the other the Grand Slam events in domestic television revenue, also have had plenty of downsides. The disparity has continued even though Amélie Mauresmo, a former WTA No. 1 from France, is the new French Open tournament director. “I admit it was tough,” she said. There is certainly room for improvement, and if we want to build the value of our combined product, then a balanced match schedule is critical in providing that pathway.” There are certainly bigger issues in tennis, but Bouin more or less kept his word, retiring long before the French Open adopted its “sessions de nuit” in 2021. Mauresmo said her goal after the draw came out was to try to find women’s matches that she could put in that showcase nighttime slot.
