Thank you, single mothers and 19th Century Club (Wednesday Journal)

They say it takes a village to raise a child. Sometimes I wonder if most people feel that way any longer. I feel as though I am at the end of a runway that ...

The world is not kind to single mothers, but when I look at these girls, I see they are the fruit of our labor. Matylda is an exceptional public speaker and I was captivated by her intelligence, charitable contributions, and grace, Sabine is also exceptional and is not only graduating with a high GPA, but also already has world experience through travel. But I must say loudly and proudly, “Who runs the world? I remember driving by the “19th Century Woman’s Club” as it was called (yes, I’m going to say it) “back in my day” over the years as an Oak Park resident and an alumna myself of Oak Park and River Forest High School. The world tells us that, as single mothers, we are depleted, too overwhelmed to care, doing the bare minimum, and if there is anything successful that comes of us raising our kids, it must be because others helped us. We are finally here — the end and the beginning at the same time.

You Don't Like Your New Boss. What Should You Do? (Harvard Business Review)

Starting a new job always comes with a few unexpected challenges. One that is especially hard to navigate is a strained relationship with your new boss.

It is worth remembering that you don’t need to really like your boss to like your job. In this case, it is important to ask specific questions about your work to elicit the feedback you need to improve. When you and your boss differ a lot in openness, then one of you is probably pushing the other to think about things in a new way, while the other is resisting this urge. When this happens, you may get the sense that your boss is displeased with your performance without any specific statements about what you should do differently. It is important to pay attention to how your boss treats everyone. If you are more conscientious than your boss, you may try to polish each task you’re given to a high gloss.

Commentary: Thank you Charles Schwab for saving our golf ... (fortworthbusiness.com)

Charles Schwab saved Fort Worth's PGA golf tournament when it became title sponsor of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club.

“The stories those vets have as to how they have used the sport of golf is amazing,” Reed said. The tournament bounced back strong in 2021 and again this year, although daily visitation in 2022 was still limited to 15,000. And there’s so much more than golf to enjoy during the tournament with fan attractions aplenty. “That was a very trying time for the club and the tournament. The longest running tournament on the PGA Tour at the same course was, for all intents and purposes, on life support after the disaster that was the relationship with Dean & Deluca, which came onboard in 2016. Now the legendary tournament is known as the Charles Schwab Challenge and remains an economic boon for Fort Worth.

A light shines bright on a stage, kids frolic under the sun at parks and camps, fairs and festivals spring up and entire small towns close down for parades.

For example, we welcome back the Oregon Country Fair in Veneta (July 8-10). It’s good to see you again, as well as FOOD for Lane County’s Chef’s Night Out (June 6 at the Lane Events Center) and Creswell’s all day 4th of July Celebration, complete with the morning parade. World class athletes come to Hayward Field this summer for the World Athletics Championships Oregon22 (July 14-25), the first time this event has been held on U.S. soil. The surge of activity is welling for the summer months, and Lane County residents are ready to gather to celebrate the simple fact that they can gather in person, not virtually.

You booze you lose! The rise of sober-curious TV (The Guardian)

TV's most compelling heroines are currently kicking the habit. Thanks to shows like The Flight Attendant, alcohol-free television is where it's at for ...

We bear witness to the exhausting effort it takes to balance perpetually at the top of a slippery slope, faced with family and friends who assume they can have “just one” or steeling themselves every time they hear the unmistakable sound of glasses clinking. For Sam, getting sober is deeply annoying, sometimes oppressive and often extremely boring; that’s before we get to the unjustly extortionate prices of non-alcoholic alternatives at the bar. She struggles to reconcile the idea of herself as an alcoholic with the image she has of alcoholism itself, crystallised by attending two very different AA meetings: one in the bougie suburbs full of people who don’t look like alcoholics, and one in the inner city full of people who, at least to Shiv’s mind, very much do. There is the party girl she used to be; the traumatised teenager; the depressive who can barely engage; and a sanctimonious example of who she might be had she made better choices. It was also the era of the unlikable antiheroine, finally allowed to let her flaws hang out, including her capacity for overindulgence, in Broad City, Insecure and Fleabag. Aside from some glimmers of deeper interrogation of women’s drinking – Mickey in Netflix’s Love, Jessa in Girls and Tuca in Tuca & Bertie – it was rarely baked into the story as it was for male characters who drank too much (Hank in Californication, BoJack Horseman, pretty much everyone in Mad Men). There is plenty of drama in blackouts, hangovers and bad behaviour, but the strict rules of recovery?

MyFitnessPal review: It does everything but exercise for you (ZDNet)

MyFitnessPal's been around for years, helping users track and modify their diet and exercise routines to reach their fitness goals.

The most you can expect is the occasional nudge to log your meal in the form of a smartphone notification, or a static screen with some confetti on it when you hit a particularly noteworthy goal. But, if you take a long, hard look at yourself and realize you're not likely to keep up with the daily tracking and honor-based metrics it requires, I would look elsewhere for a bit more help. Ultimately, MyFitnessPal is a tool that you'll need to pick up and use on a daily basis. If you take the time to customize the app's features and database each day, you'll find MyFitnessPal continually gets easier and quicker to use, becoming more of a mealtime reflex than a chore. MyFitnessPal, even with its free tier, gives you all of the tools you'll need to accurately, meticulously track every aspect of your diet and exercise. While this isn't much of an issue most of the time, some workouts that straddle the two categories can be a bit annoying to log due to being unsure which search you should actually use. While your daily step count is automatically tracked in the "Progress" tab of the app, where your long-term accomplishments live, all of the other trackable metrics are on you to upload. You can accomplish this using a similar interface to your diet tracking. While it's a nice extra, it's not really necessary and isn't worth the extra cost for the few seconds you're likely to save by using it. We'll also be focusing on the free tier of MyFitnessPal. The app offers a Premium tier for $9.99 per month or $49.99 per year, which adds some additional functionality and tracking metrics. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services. Let's take a look at how the latest iteration of MyFitnessPal can serve you as the central hub of your own personal fitness journey.

Are You a Real CEO? Here's a Self-Assessment Formula (Entrepreneur)

As your company grows, there may be pressure to hire a "real" CEO. What makes a great CEO? And should you give in to the pressure? The self-assessment ...

What matters is that if a mistake can be absorbed by your business, the decision cannot be considered to be a fateful decision. A fateful decision is a decision that must be made but can destroy your business. Only you can evaluate the nuances, changes in the environment and technology available to determine what path needs to be taken. Being a successful CEO is a journey. If you wait too long to make a decision, because you want "just a bit more" information, you risk losing the opportunity. As we know, the CEO should know when to change direction before anyone else even knows that a turn is needed. It takes a great CEO to foresee the need to make a turn. Sure, it sounds cool to say, "I went against the crowd, and I was right!" Let's compare the CEO role to a driver holding a steering wheel. As a CEO, your task is to separate the information from opinion. Often, people give you advice not because they know the answer, but because you ask. Below, I suggest a formula you can use to assess for yourself whether you are a "real" CEO.

'You Are the Show': A Hudson Valley Outpost of the Avant-Garde (The New York Times)

PS21 presents work that challenges and invites, like performances by QDance, a Nigerian troupe whose leader says, “I am not your entertainment.”

With the goal of “rehearsing the future,” they focused more on practice than on product, he said. “The more dogs we saw, the friendlier the owners became,” Siyanko said. “As we tour, we carry her with us,” he said. He conceived the work in three parts — birth, death and rebirth — and death, he said, gave him the most trouble. Inspired by the Yoruba traveling theater of the 1960s, QDance began creating works based on Yoruba philosophy and aesthetics — and presenting them on the touring circuit. In a series of solos, Onikeku explored philosophical ideas: the isolation of exile, the difference between history and the past, the body as a storehouse of generational memory. “I was interested in being more useful within society,” he said. “You are the show,” he said. “In a funny way, the pandemic helped us,” she said. “I am not your entertainment,” he said in a tone that, like the whole event, was at once challenging and inviting. The event, called “Middle Ground,” was part of its Pathways series designed to engage the local community. Eventually, as guitar and muted trumpet intensified with ululations and drums, he shared his thoughts about the meaning of “we” and everyone’s complicity in injustice.

Five things you need to know about the Celtics in the NBA Finals (wgbh.org)

Boston Celtics' Jayson Tatum plays against the Miami Heat during the first half of Game 6 of the NBA basketball Eastern Conference finals playoff series, Friday ...

For Boston, just getting here is a major accomplishment, as the team was the Eastern Conference runner-up in 2017, 2018 and 2020. Not to mention they have the many talents of Defensive Player of the Year Marcus Smart. Add to that the firepower from Tatum and Jaylen Brown, and this Celtics team — which went 1-1 against the Warriors this season — is nothing to mess around with. "But, you know, I think you just trust in yourself, trust in the work that you've put in to get to this point and continue to work," he said. With everything they bring to the table, the Warriors are the favorites to win the series, though just barely. Additionally, there's history at stake on the individual level. The Warriors are like a basketball onion, with layer upon layer of talent. Speaking after the Celtics took down the Miami Heat in the Game 7 of the Eastern Conference finals, center Al Horford said he noticed the team started to click around February. "You never know what's going to happen with pricing, but you may see these go up," he said. Here are five things you'll need to know ahead of the team's quest to hang an 18th championship banner in TD Garden. This year it's been business as usual," he said. During this season’s playoffs, Boston has averaged just 101 points allowed per game, the second-best mark in the league. And I felt that we were, whatever it was, one step away from clicking throughout the season.

If you got involved in the NBA futures markets, hopefully, you invested in either the Warriors or Celtics prior to the start of the Finals. Even with two of their stars out for a good chunk of the regular season, the Warriors were fortunate to face a Jamal Murray- and Michael Porter Jr.-less Nuggets bunch in the first round. Hindsight is always 20-20, but looking back it was crazy to see the second-seeded Celtics as series underdogs versus the seventh-seeded Nets. The Nets' isolation-heavy offense and lack of interior defense was no match for the Celtics, as Boston got revenge a year later, sweeping the Nets in four games. It's also worth noting that a $100 wager on the Celtics on Feb. 1 returns $6,600. Despite starting to play better, the Celtics still sat at +6600 on Feb. 1. The Warriors entered the All-Star break with the NBA’s third-best record of 42-17, shifting their championship odds from a 10-percent implied probability to a little over 19 percent.

However, since that stat also captures the effect of having the better team — which usually (but not always) correlates with a better record — the true value of Finals home court is smaller. Why You Should Root for the Warriors in the NBA Finals (New York Magazine)

If they weren’t the Celtics — which is to say if they weren’t from Boston — you’d be tempted to cheer for them. Maybe in a decade or so, if no Boston team has won anything between now and then, it will be permissible to cheer for one of them. And he’s surrounded by other megawatt stars, from Klay Thompson (who’s enjoying a comeback narrative this year after missing nearly two seasons with injuries), Draymond Green (who might be not only the best defensive player in the league, but the best podcaster) and Jordan Poole, a former G-League standout who might just be establishing himself as … the next Stephen Curry. That’s not to mention coach Steve Kerr, a five-time champion as a player going for his fourth title as a coach, who recently drew notice for his raw and stirring reaction to the Uvalde shooting — hardly the first time he’d spoken up politically. Two of the league’s biggest superstars, LeBron James and Kevin Durant, both had nightmare years, mostly due to situations outside their control (an awful Lakers roster for LeBron, the forever-drama of Kyrie Irving and James Harden for Durant). The biggest stories for most of the year were about vaccine hesitation and (still) political debates, not basketball. It’s actually sort of surprising how beloved the Warriors are — perhaps the most roundly liked pseudo-dynasty since the Michael Jordan Bulls. Traditionally, we cheer against teams going for a fourth title in just a few years. A year ago, the Boston Celtics seemed to be falling apart.
