What veterans' poems can teach us about healing on Memorial Day ... (Iowa Capital Dispatch)

On Memorial Day, "poems written by veterans that focus on honoring those who have died may give us a clue" to healing our deep divisions.

These words cannot be just lines or lists; they become, by being memorialized in a black stone, a “mirror,” the reader’s and thus society’s “reflection.” All on the bench are implicated; the names died for us, and, as a result, are us. The words are “names,” which “could be lines / of poems or a grocery list. For the visitor, the memorial becomes “an opened book,” a place where “A word loses its ability to conjure / trapped inside a black mirror.” We can also learn from Brock Jones, an Army veteran who served three tours of duty in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He named his award-winning book “ Cenotaph,” the name for a tomb to honor those whose graves lie elsewhere. As a result, their image in the stone becomes a living memorial. Yet even with such a positive affirming metaphor, the speaker’s mind and heart are not fully at ease. “I go down the 58,022 names, / half-expecting to find / my own in letters like smoke. The holiday emerged from the Civil War as a celebration almost exclusively for veterans of the Union Army to remember those who had died. They address language’s inability to capture or express loss linked to memories of war. The concluding line relieves that worry – the names are not being erased. / He’s lost his right arm / inside the stone. It surfaces daily as communities such as New Orleans wrestle with whether or not to keep memorial statues honoring Confederate leaders like Robert E. Lee. Editor’s note: The Lee statue was removed in May 2017, but the debate over removing Confederate influence continues.

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who died in service to their country. Indeed, as a new report from the National Consumer Law Center and other consumer advocacy groups makes clear, there are some very important ways in which current federal law allows veterans not just to be dishonored, but affirmatively targeted for exploitation.

This memorial is one of the most beautiful and peaceful places in the city, and I find it has a way of silencing the demons in my head. Personally, I can't think of a better way to honor both those lost to war and those lost to violence at home than to work toward ending the constant echo of gunfire, once and for all. The pretension of helplessness on the part of elected officials is insulting to all of us, especially the dead and the grieving. My father died at the age of 26, in Pittsburgh … a victim of gun violence a mere two years after he returned from the war. Every Memorial Day, I find myself mulling one of the few photographs I have of my father taken during the Vietnam War. It's of him and two other boys. I say “boys” because now, at the age of 50, I can see that's what my father was at the time.

Since being sworn in as a member of the United States House of Representatives, it has been a key passion and priority of mine to care for the families left behind by our fallen heroes and my fallen brothers and sisters. As a nation, I ask that we reflect upon those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, pay tribute to the fallen and never forget the families they left behind. This article is an Op-Ed and as such, the opinions expressed are those of the authors. Deeply emotional moments in my career involving the fallen and their families often play out in my memories as I reflect upon the true meaning of Memorial Day. Several years ago, when I was freshly promoted to brigadier general in the Air Force, one of my first duties was to serve as the accident investigation board president for an Air Force MC-12 reconnaissance aircraft that crashed on a mission over Afghanistan, horrifically killing all four crewmembers on board. As I reflect upon those our country has lost and those brave warriors whom I personally knew, I am reminded of the importance of not only honoring and remembering their service and sacrifice, but honoring them through action, by caring for the families they leave behind. Memorial Day is one of the most sacred days of the year for our nation — and for me personally.

Memorial Day – A day of solemn reflection - The Coastland Times (The Coastland Times)

It's odd how we have a tendency with all good intentions to say “Happy Memorial Day” to a veteran without thinking for a second that while.

He is our rescue, He is our strength, He is our comforter and healer. In view of the fact our nation has suffered tragedy again in the last few days, I will not address my opinion or feelings about it until next week – for this week, I choose to keep my focus on this Memorial Day as the center of our attention, our veterans, our fallen and their families deserve that. The little red poppy flower is given usually with or without a contribution and to say “thank you” on behalf of the soldiers, airmen, seamen and Marine Corps veterans who benefit from your generosity. I wish all the living family members of our veterans who throughout history have seen the official military car drive up; service members knock on the door and deliver the incredibly sad and very bad news, a day to know that we, as Americans, acknowledge you too. This special day is a federal holiday set aside for our nation to mourn together for the beautiful faces and warm embraces we can no longer touch of our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters and best friends. It is a day when older vets and younger ones, too, gather at gravesides, monuments and memorials to stand in unity, side by side, shoulder to shoulder and honor our fallen.

If you're the type that needs to have good espresso on the trail, the Picopresso is our favorite portable espresso maker. Oru’s foldable kayaks are another possibility for those of us without the space to store and transport boats. This is the best thing I’ve tested this year. Strap your tent poles to the outside, and you’re ready to do a couple of weeks on the trail. Add the Picopresso to your cart to see the discount at checkout. The Ranger is the smaller, more portable sibling to the Yukon, which we reviewed and liked. This one just adds the ability to recline for some night sky viewing. It burns wood and charcoal and packs down surprisingly small when you want to throw it in the trunk and hit the road. Memorial Day became an official national holiday in 1971 to honor Americans who died in military service, some 1.1. million people since the nation’s founding. Of course, numbers are inadequate shorthand for the horror and the grief that every death provokes. But it feels appropriate to use the day this year to honor other Americans who have died from other cataclysmic events — the million who have been killed by the COVID-19 pandemic since 2020, and the 1.5 million who have been killed by firearms over the last four decades.

Editorial: America needs a Memorial Day for gun-violence victims (Los Angeles Times)

Today is perhaps the most somber of all American holidays. Memorial Day is a time to remember our war dead, those in the armed services who gave their lives ...

An official day dedicated to this tragic reality will remind us that firearms take a daily toll in this country, and perhaps move Americans to action. Consider the number of people murdered by gunmen at houses of worship over the past several years. Their names should be before us, observed on a specified day each year, when we remember them and the need to address this enemy in our midst. And a 2014 study by UC San Francisco found that people with ready access to firearms were three times more likely to die by suicide. Memorial Day is a time to remember our war dead, those in the armed services who gave their lives to protect our nation. Dedicating a day to honor these veterans and mourn their deaths helps remind us of the terrible toll of war.

We must invest in the care of service members and their families, from health care to housing to education. “On this Memorial Day, we must renew our commitment to not only honor those who have fallen in the fight for our freedom, but those who return from war. “As our nation reels from the devastating loss of civilian life in cities and towns across our country as a result of the epidemic of gun violence, we come together today to honor those brave Americans who elect to put their own lives on the line to keep other Americans safe as members of the Armed Services. Every year – but especially this year – we commemorate Memorial Day with solemnity and reflect together as a nation on the sanctity of every life, and the immense sacrifice of every life that’s been lost, from the battlefield to the schoolyard.

Rex has a jar filled with coins that she keeps at home. For each of their funerals, people lined the streets as their caskets arrived in September. A bomb, detonated by a member of ISIS K, killed the service members and at least 170 Afghans. Forty-five U.S. troops were wounded. “You never think you’re going to bury a child or a grandchild. Marines from Merola's unit visit regularly from Camp Pendleton, including some who were wounded in the blast. She comes to the cemetery five to six times a week. I know I'll never be the same person I was,” Rex said. “I pretty much knew that morning," Rex said. Most were from the 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines, stationed at Camp Pendleton. Their unit had arrived in Afghanistan 11 days earlier. His mother said he watched the Military Channel when he was 4 years old.

Weirton remembers meaning behind Memorial Day (The Steubenville Herald-Star)

WEIRTON — Weirton residents gathered at the Honor Roll Monument were reminded, Monday, of the importance of Memorial Day, and the reason for its observance.

McAllister urged those in attendance to spend time during the Memorial Day holiday thinking about not only those who gave their lives, but the families of those fallen service members; to think of those who sat down to a holiday meal only to be visited by officers in dress uniform arriving to tell them their loved one wasn’t going to return. It is a sacrifice, he said, everyone enlisting in the military understands is possible as part of their service. The Rev. Rudy McAllister, pastor of Mount Olive Baptist Church and a 34-year Air Force veteran, noted the number of those lost during military service over the last century, reminding the crowd Memorial Day is not about cookouts and discounts at retail outlets but about showing respect for those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.
