Gun control: Biden mourns with Uvalde families but honoring pleas ... (CNN)

And the campaign against tightening gun laws prioritizes the rights of gun owners over those of innocent victims, like those in Texas who last week had the right to life destroyed in an instant. So entrenched are these positions that the sense of helplessness in the face of repeated massacres seems unlikely to dissipate quickly. He proposed more guns in schools to keep kids safe and for the turning of school buildings into fortresses. The notion that even horrific carnage like that which unfolded last week in Texas must never diminish the magnitude of the freedom of Americans to own high-powered weapons of war resonates in red, more rural states usually represented by Republicans, where Trump remains highly popular. Kinzinger, however, is hardly a representative sample of the GOP since he has freed himself from party orthodoxy by breaking with Trump -- including over his election fraud lies. For the President, doing "something" might be impossible. But given the stuck reality of national politics and the GOP's fervent opposition to any changes to gun laws, the idea that Uvalde is the moment when a critical mass of public anger overcomes political inertia seems far-fetched. Crenshaw's arguments were symptomatic of the position that any gun control measures would be effectively un-American -- an outlook that weighs heavily against any effective action in Congress. "By far the worst day of my life. While the President's power may be limited, he did his emotional duty and more Sunday, spending three hours with bereaved families on Sunday afternoon. But the stark lesson of recent history is that momentum fades with each day that passes after the carnage. The revelations raised the agonizing possibilities that these departures from active shooter protocols could have cost lives.

“There are more Republicans interested in talking about finding a path forward this time than I have ever seen since Sandy Hook,” said Murphy who represented the Newtown area as a congressman at the time of the Sandy Hook shooting. “Evil came to that elementary school classroom in Texas, to that grocery store in New York, to far too many places where innocents have died,” Biden said Saturday in a commencement address at the University of Delaware. “We have to stand stronger. He traveled to Buffalo, New York, on May 17 to meet with victims’ families and condemn white supremacy after a shooter espousing the racist “replacement theory” killed 10 Black people at a supermarket. “You have seen the news, you have witnessed the tears of your parents, friends,” he said, encouraging them not to be afraid of life. As president, Biden has tried to address gun violence through executive orders. He had just turned 18, permitting him to buy the weapons under federal law. Why do we keep letting this happen?” Officials revealed Friday that students and teachers repeatedly begged 911 operators for help as a police commander told more than a dozen officers to wait in a hallway. President Joe Biden grieved with the shattered community of Uvalde on Sunday, mourning privately for three hours with anguished families of the 19 schoolchildren and two teachers killed by a gunman. We need to do something about it.” Officials said the commander believed the suspect was barricaded inside an adjoining classroom and that there was no longer an active attack. “But we need change.

In gaffe, Joe Biden claims 9mm bullet 'blows the lung out of the body' (Washington Times)

President Biden took aim Monday at one of the most common types of firearms owned by Americans in what appeared to be a gun-related technical flub.

I can’t change a background check. A 9mm bullet blows the lung out of the body,” Mr. Biden told reporters at the White House. “The idea these high-caliber weapons — there’s simply no rational basis for it in terms of self-protection, hunting … There’s only one reason for something that can fire 100 shots.” But I can’t outlaw a weapon. I can’t do that.” “I can’t dictate this stuff. Speaking about his past experience with congressional hearings on “rational gun laws” and a visit to a New York trauma hospital, Mr. Biden appeared to confuse the different types of bullets used by semiautomatic handguns vs.

Remarks by President Biden at the 154th National Memorial Day ... (The White House)

Arlington National CemeteryArlington, Virginia 12:54 P.M. EDT THE PRESIDENT: Thank you. They lie here in glory and honor -- in quiet rows in.

This is the mission of our time. It is a fight that so many of the patriots, whose eternal rest is here in these hallowed grounds, were part of. Our democracy is our greatest gift as a nation, made holy by those we’ve lost along the way. We don’t know how many Americans and service members may have died because of what they were exposed to on the battlefield. It was a remarkable experience again, an honor, looking out at those young men and women — newly commissioned officers — embarking on a life of service. And so a part of them is still with us no matter how long ago we lost them. Hearts broken by their absence, and lives that will never be the same. 7,054 American military members gave their lives over 20 years of our Iraq and Afghan conflicts. And today, as a nation, we undertake a sacred ritual: to reflect and to remember. They chose a life of purpose. They chose a life of purpose. Memorial Day is always a day where pain and pride are mixed together.

Biden to meet Federal Reserve chair as inflation bites pocketbooks (New York Post)

President Joe Biden will meet Tuesday with Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell as soaring inflation takes a bite out of Americans' pocketbooks.

That concern has caused sharp drops in stock prices in the past two months, though markets rallied last week. But the economy saw a welcome bit of data Friday, as the Commerce Department said inflation rose 6.3% in April from a year earlier, the first slowdown since November 2020 and a sign that high prices may finally be moderating, at least for now. The White House said the pair would discuss the state of the U.S. and global economy and especially inflation, described as Biden’s “top economic priority.” The goal, the White House said, is a “transition from an historic economic recovery to stable, steady growth that works for working families.”

Joe Biden: My Plan for Fighting Inflation (The Wall Street Journal)

I won't meddle with the Fed, but I will tackle high prices while guiding the economy's transition to stable and steady growth.

I welcome debate on my plan to tackle inflation and move the economy to stable and steady growth. The economic policy choices we make today will determine whether a sustained recovery that benefits all Americans is possible. And we can lower the cost of child and elder care to help parents get back to work. In addition to winding down emergency programs responsibly, about half the reduction is driven by an increase in revenue—as my economic policies powered a rapid recovery. We can reduce the price of prescription drugs by giving Medicare the power to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies and capping the cost of insulin. That is why I led the largest release from global oil reserves in history. The most important thing we can do now to transition from rapid recovery to stable, steady growth is to bring inflation down. My predecessor demeaned the Fed, and past presidents have sought to influence its decisions inappropriately during periods of elevated inflation. In less than a year and a half, my administration’s economic and vaccination plans helped achieve the most robust recovery in modern history. The U.S. is in a better economic position than almost any other country. We now have a chance to build on a historic recovery with an economy that works for working families. I grew up in a family where it mattered when the price of gas or groceries rose.
