During Rafael Nadal's long illustrious career, he has played 112 matches at Roland Garros and won 109 of them.
"Here we are in Roland Garros. It is my favorite place, without a doubt. But, in that fifth set, he showcased his brilliance on clay. "[It's] a huge challenge and probably the biggest one that you can have here in Roland Garros. I'm ready for it." It continued his perfect start to the tournament in which he has yet to drop a set. On clay, the rivalry is more lopsided in favor of Nadal who has won seven matches compared to Djokovic's two. The two players, who have won 15 of the last 17 French Open titles, will meet again on Tuesday in the quarterfinals in what is one of the most anticipated matches of the tournament.
The tournament's usually festive, early-summer atmosphere is now tinged with controversy over one company: Amazon.
There have been repeated protests against Amazon’s expansion plans, including new warehouses, with demonstrators linking the company’s rising success in France with President Emmanuel Macron’s business-friendly policies. After his win Sunday, he said it would be “unfair” if Nadal books a daytime slot, and likely leaves him playing at night. As if to cool tempers, the week’s hotly anticipated match—Nadal against top-seeded player Novak Djokovic—is scheduled for Tuesday night, rather than during the daytime, as most players prefer. During breaks in the play, both men wrapped Roland Garros towels around them to ward off the cold, which dropped to single-digit Celcius as it neared midnight. But like his countryman, Alcaraz wants nothing to do with Amazon’s nighttime games. Having clinched 21 Grand Slam titles, he’s vying for his 14th French Open win this week, at Paris’s famous Roland Garros stadium.

Novak Djokovic renews his epic 16-year rivalry with Rafael Nadal at the French Open on Tuesday with a semi-final spot at stake.
It's not going to be an easy thing for me to play at 9:30 at night with no sunlight, with no heat, and 8 degrees." It's a huge challenge and probably the biggest one that you can have here." And being honest, every match that I play here, I don't know if it's going to be my last at Roland Garros. I can't complain much," said Nadal, who arrived in Paris unsure if he would be able to take part after suffering a recurrence in Rome of a chronic foot injury which has plagued him for large parts of his career. Rafael Nadal does not like playing tennis at Roland Garros in the cooler, heavier conditions at night, particularly against Novak Djokovic.
Of the two, Coco Gauff against Sloane Stephens looks the more likely to produce a surprise result. However, she did beat Gauff in straight sets at the US Open last year meaning there is some suspicion she could provide stiff opposition when they get underway around 12.15pm. The match that precedes it on Chatrier is well worth watching too though.

Kudermetova maintained that lead to level the match, and held her nerve in an edgy final game to convert her seventh set point. By contrast, with eight previous quarterfinal-or-better showings at majors under her belt, including at the Australian Open in January, Keys held the edge in experience. Kasatkina improved her head-to-head against Giorgi to 2-0, having previously beaten the Italian in the 2020 Lyon quarterfinals. Seven extended deuce games could have swung either way; Kasatkina won six of them, including all four in the first set. The 25-year-old had not reached the second week of a Grand Slam since making back-to-back quarterfinals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2018. Former World No.10 Kasatkina has yet to drop a set, and indeed has conceded just 14 games in four matches so far.

The pair's showpiece quarterfinal in Paris this year is scheduled at night in more humid conditions that work against Nadal's topspin-heavy groundstrokes.
Against Djokovic in particular, this also allows him to stop the Serb from using his backhand to dictate the rallies. After reaching the final in Belgrade and semifinal in Madrid, he picked up his first trophy of the year at Rome, peaking just in time for the second Major of the year. The fact that the pair are at odds even for the scheduling of their quarterfinal encounter, not willing to lose even an inch of ground to the other, shows how closely fought this rivalry is. This is likely to allow Djokovic to move up to the baseline and use his own flatter groundstrokes and varied arsenal to take time away from his rival. The ball picks up the moisture and does not bounce as high, curbing Nadal from using his groundstrokes to dictate proceedings from the baseline. The Spaniard’s topspin-heavy groundstrokes bounce very high off the claycourts under the sun at ferocious speeds and allow him to construct the points at his own pace.
